Chapter 5 - The Master’s Return

On December 26th, the corporate board of the Tri-State Medical Group convened an emergency executive session at their glass headquarters in White Plains. Arthur Marsh sat at the head of the massive granite conference table, his silver hair perfectly groomed, his expensive suit pristine. Madison sat to his right, her hands clasped tightly in her lap, flanked by four high-priced criminal defense attorneys.

"This is a administrative misunderstanding," Arthur Marsh announced to the room, his voice dripping with old-money confidence. "My daughter has been subjected to an illegal search by county authorities based on the delusional accusations of an old woman with an axe to grind. The Tri-State Medical Group will not tolerate this smear campaign. We are prepared to tie this hospital and the district attorney's office up in litigation for the next decade."

The heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open.

The attorneys stopped talking. Arthur Marsh looked up, his expression of smug certainty freezing on his face.

I walked into the room.

I wasn't wearing my kitchen apron or my Larchmont gardening gloves. I was wearing a sharp, tailored navy blue wool suit that I hadn't pulled from my closet in twenty-five years. Behind me walked Dr. Nathan Brooks, the Chief of Cardiology, and behind him stood the Dean of Harvard Medical School, Dr. Charles Harrington, who had flown in from Boston that morning.

"Evelyn," Arthur Marsh said, his eyes narrowing. "You have no standing in this boardroom. This is a private executive session."

"Actually, Arthur, she has more standing in this building than you do," Dr. Harrington said, stepping forward and dropping a heavy leather bound ledger onto the center of the granite table. "Twenty-five years ago, when Dr. Evelyn Monroe retired from active surgical practice, she didn't dissolve her medical charter. She transferred her entire portfolio of intellectual property—including the patents for three distinct pediatric arterial shunts that your medical group uses in every single one of its surgical centers—into a private, closed-loop medical trust."

Arthur Marsh’s face drained of color. He looked down at the ledger, his fingers twitching against his fountain pen.

"The terms of that trust are explicit, Arthur," I said, walking to the foot of the table, leaning my hands flat against the polished stone. The posture was the same one I used when instructing senior residents before a difficult procedure. "If any administrative body utilizing those patents is found to be engaged in criminal negligence, medical fraud, or the intentional harm of a trust beneficiary... the licensing rights terminate instantly. Effective at noon today, the Tri-State Medical Group no longer has the legal right to manufacture, use, or profit from the Monroe Shunts."

"You can't do that," Madison screamed, jumping to her feet. "That's sixty percent of our surgical revenue! You’ll bankrupt us!"

"Then you should have left my husband alone under the Christmas tree, Madison," I said, my voice perfectly level, devoid of any anger, carrying only the absolute finality of a surgical death certificate. "You called me a housewife. You told my son I would kill his father. But the reality is that your entire family’s fortune was built on the back of the woman you tried to erase."

Detective Vance entered the room then, followed by four uniform officers. He didn't look at the attorneys. He walked straight to Madison and Arthur Marsh, pulling two sets of steel handcuffs from his belt.

"Arthur Marsh, Madison Marsh... you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, federal wire fraud, and grand larceny," Vance said.

As the officers moved in, Madison looked at me, her eyes filled with a desperate, pathetic pleading. "Evelyn... please. Talk to Daniel. Tell him I love him. Tell him we can fix this."

I turned my back to her, looking out the floor-to-ceiling windows toward the snow-covered hills of Westchester. "Daniel is at the hospital, Madison. He’s learning how to glue the angel back together."
