Chapter 5 - The Trap Cracks

The sound of gunfire shattered the night.

It wasn't the clean, distant pop of a movie; it was a deafening, terrifying roar that shook the walls of the small house. Dust and plaster rained down from the ceiling as bullets ripped through the front door.

Diego threw himself over Renata in the small utility closet, holding her head against his chest. "Close your eyes, baby," he whispered, his voice trembling. "Keep them closed. Daddy's here."

"I'm not afraid, Dad," Renata whispered back, though her small body was shaking violently. "I know you're going to save me."

In the hallway, the federal agents returned fire. The exchange was brief but intense. Sofia Mendoza’s voice rose above the chaos, shouting orders, her weapon firing in rapid, controlled bursts.

"They're trying to breach the back!" an agent yelled.

A heavy thud rattled the utility closet door.

Diego looked around desperately. The closet had a small, high window that led to the alley behind the house. It was too small for him, but...

"Renata," Diego said, lifting her up. "You see that window? I need you to climb out. There is a trash bin on the other side. Slide down, hide behind it, and do not make a sound. If anyone comes, you run to the main street. Do you understand?"

"No, Dad! I'm not leaving you!"

"You have to, Renata! You are the most important thing. Go!"

He pushed her through the window. She wiggled through, her pink dress catching on the latch for a second before she slipped through into the dark, rainy night.

As soon as she was gone, the closet door was kicked open.

A man in a black mask, carrying a rifle, stood in the doorway. But before he could raise his weapon, Diego lunged. He slammed his body into the intruder, using his weight to pin the man against the wall.

They scrambled for the rifle. The man was stronger, trained, and he quickly gained the upper hand, striking Diego in the face with the butt of the gun. Diego fell back, blood pouring from his nose, his vision turning black at the edges.

"Where is the girl?" the man growled, stepping toward the open window.

"She's gone," Diego gasped, coughing up blood. "And you're too late."

"We'll see about that," a voice said from the hallway.

Don Armando stepped into the ruined closet. He was holding his gold-headed cane, his face completely devoid of any grandfatherly warmth. Behind him, Karla stood, her emerald dress splattered with plaster dust, her eyes cold and triumphant.

"You always were a disappointing son, Diego," Armando said, looking down at him with disgust. "You thought you could challenge me? In my own territory?"

"I don't need to challenge you, Dad," Diego whispered, a bloody smile spreading across his face. "I already won."

Armando's brow furrowed. "What are you talking about?"

Sofia Mendoza stepped out from behind the corner, her hands in the air, but she was smiling too. "He means, Don Armando, that we weren't just saving the video on that tablet. We were streaming it. Live. To the federal server in Mexico City. And to every major news outlet in the country."

Armando’s phone began to buzz violently in his pocket.

Then Karla’s phone.

Then the security guard’s radio.

Armando pulled out his phone. The screen was flooded with notifications. The video of him and Karla discussing Renata’s abuse had already been viewed millions of times. It was trending globally. The federal Attorney General had just issued an emergency press release: Warrants issued for Don Armando Arriaga and Karla Arriaga for child torture and organized corruption.

"No," Karla gasped, dropping her phone. "No, this can't be happening. Armando, do something! Fix this!"

"Shut up, you fool!" Armando roared, his face turning a dark, dangerous red. He turned to his security guard. "Get the girl! We need her as leverage! Now!"

But before the guard could move, the sound of heavy helicopters filled the air.

Bright, searchlight beams pierced through the broken windows of the house, turning the dark rooms into day. A voice boomed from above:

"This is the Federal Police Gendarmerie. Drop your weapons immediately. You are completely surrounded. Don Armando Arriaga, you are under arrest."

May you like

Armando looked at the ceiling, then at Diego. For the first time in his life, the old man looked small.

The mask of the powerful Don had finally cracked.
