Chapter 6: The Verdict

Six Months Later.
The courtroom was freezing, but I felt warm in my tailored crimson blazer. My hair was starting to grow back, a soft pixie cut that framed a face with full cheeks and bright eyes. The cancer was gone. Dr. Evans had declared me in complete remission.
I took the witness stand, looking directly at Richard. He sat in his orange jumpsuit, looking ten years older, the arrogance completely drained from his face.
When the prosecutor played the audio recording of the incident, the silence in the courtroom was deafening.
“Your brother needs that money more than you need your life.”

The jury didn't take long. Guilty of Aggravated Assault and Attempted Extortion. The judge handed down a sentence of seven years in a state penitentiary. As the bailiff led him away, Richard didn't look back. And I didn't care.
