Chapter 1: The First Step

The ballroom fell completely silent.

Every eye locked onto the girl as her trembling fingers tightened around the boy’s hand. Her breath came in short, uneven bursts, like she was standing at the edge of something terrifying—and beautiful.

“Take your time,” the boy said softly, his voice steady, grounding her.

She nodded.

Slowly… carefully… she pushed down against the armrests of her wheelchair. Her arms shook. Her legs—unused to bearing weight—hesitated, as if they had forgotten what to do.

A gasp rippled through the crowd.

Her father took a step forward, instinctively wanting to rush to her side—but he stopped himself. His hands hovered in the air, helpless. Tears blurred his vision.

“Come on,” the boy whispered. “You’ve got this.”

And then—

She lifted.

Just an inch at first. Then more.

Her knees wobbled violently, but she didn’t fall. The boy held her hand firmly, not pulling her up, just… being there. Letting her do it.

“I’m… I’m standing,” she breathed, her voice filled with disbelief.

The room erupted in shocked murmurs.

Her father covered his mouth, a sob escaping him. For years, doctors had told him this moment might never come.

Standing.
