Chapter 5 - The Trap at the Penthouse

Daniel didn't hesitate. He pulled a flashbang grenade from his tactical vest—a piece of gear he’d kept from his SWAT days—pulled the pin, and dropped it over the railing into the central fountain below while simultaneously diving behind the marble pillar.
The resulting explosion of white light and deafening sound shattered the mall's glass display cases, plunging the atrium back into chaotic darkness. Marcus’s men opened fire, their automatic weapons chewing through the marble column, throwing chunks of stone and dust into the air.
Daniel didn't fire back. He ran. He sprinted through the back corridors of a department store, smashed through an emergency exit, and leaped into his unmarked car just as bullets riddled the pavement around him. He tore out of the parking lot, his hand tightly clutching the leather purse.
When he returned to the warehouse, he was covered in plaster dust and bleeding from a small laceration on his cheek. Emily gasped as he climbed into the car, throwing the purse into her lap.
"Did you get it?" she asked frantically.
Emily ripped open the bag, pulled out the silver lipstick tube, and twisted the base. The top popped off, revealing a gold-plated USB 3.0 connector.
Daniel pulled out his ruggedized tactical department laptop, which was routed through an independent encrypted satellite hot-spot. He plugged the drive in. The screen flashed a single prompt: ENTER ENCRYPTION KEY.
"The key," Daniel said, looking at Emily. "What is it?"
"It’s the coordinates of the place we first met," Emily whispered, her hands shaking as she typed into the keyboard: 40.7128-74.0060.
The laptop chimed. The screen erupted into thousands of scrolling lines of green data. It was all there. Millions of dollars traced from public construction grants directly into Marcus Kane’s personal accounts. But most importantly, there was an audio file dated just two weeks ago. Daniel clicked play.
Marcus’s voice filled the car: “If Emily Carter attempts to bring that paternity suit to court, ensure the vehicle transport carrying her from the clinic suffers a fatal brake failure. I want her and the fetus neutralized before the formal deposition. I don't care what it costs.”
It was a direct, recorded order for premeditated murder.
"This is it," Daniel said, a cold, victorious light entering his eyes. "This doesn't just destroy his business; this puts him in a federal penitentiary for the rest of his life. But we can't take this to the local courts. We need to go higher."
"No need to travel far, Officer Torres," a voice boomed from the warehouse entrance.
The metal doors of the warehouse were ripped open by a massive, armored tactical vehicle. But it wasn't Marcus’s men. Dozens of agents wearing jackets with large, yellow letters—FBI—poured into the building, their weapons raised, led by a sharp-eyed woman with a federal badge pinned to her lapel.

"Federal Bureau of Investigation!" she announced. "I am Special Agent Sarah Ross, Public Corruption Division. Put your weapons down, Officer Torres. We’ve been tracking 'Project Leviathan' for eighteen months, but we lacked the encryption keys to break their server. Your satellite uplink just pinged our database. We have the warrant, and we have the perimeter secured."
Daniel slowly lowered his weapon, letting out the longest breath of his life. He looked back at Emily, who was holding her son tightly against her chest, tears of sheer relief streaming down her face.
