Chapter 4 - The Exposure

The tactical team descending from the ropes of the military helicopter didn't belong to the local sheriff's department. They were federal operators from the Joint Terrorism Task Force, backed by a specialized military extraction unit. Within ninety seconds, Daniel’s hired mercenaries and Sheriff Walker were pinned to the mud, disarmed, and secured in heavy zip-ties.
A tall, sharp-eyed officer in a dark tactical uniform marched toward me, splashing through the puddles. He stopped, saluted me with absolute respect, and said, "Director Carter. Colonel Vance Vance from Federal Security. We have secured the perimeter. Where is the asset?"
"Safe, inside," I said, lowering my weapon. "Daniel Vance is right here. Secure him. He is highly dangerous, manipulative, and holds a public office he has systematically corrupted."
Daniel was slammed against the hood of his own SUV, handcuffs clicking tightly around his wrists. He was screaming, spitting madly, his political mask completely shattered. "This is an illegal military occupation! I am a elected official! You can't do this to me!"
"We can, and we are, Mr. Vance," Colonel Vance said coldly. "Under the Federal Intelligence and Counter-Surveillance Act, your actions constitute an immediate threat to a classified federal asset—namely, Director Carter. Your jurisdiction ends right here."
I hurried back into the basement and unlocked the steel safe box. Ethan looked up, his eyes wide.
"Blue sky, baby," I whispered.
He flew into my arms, crying tears of relief. I carried him upstairs into the morning light. The storm was finally passing, the first rays of dawn breaking through the gray clouds.
But as Colonel Vance began setting up a temporary command post in my living room, my monitors in the basement suddenly began to chime an alarm. I ran back down, the colonel following close behind.
One of Daniel’s encrypted laptops, which the federal team had seized from his SUV, had just initiated an automated data wipe. But before the screen went dark, a red warning text flashed: “Data Package 4-A Transmitted to Secondary Node.”
I analyzed the transmission trail. My blood ran cold.
"Colonel," I said, my fingers flying across the keys to trace the signal. "Daniel wasn't working alone. The files Ethan saw in the basement... they weren't just blackmail on local politicians. He has a handler. The data package containing Ethan's location and identity was just transmitted to a private security compound upstate. They know the feds have Daniel. They’re going to erase the rest of the evidence, and they’re going to launch a full-scale political smear campaign to force your team to withdraw."
The secondary node belonged to Chief Justice Thomas Sterling—the most powerful legal authority in the state, and Daniel’s adoptive mentor. He was the apex of the pyramid.

"We don't have jurisdiction to raid a sitting Chief Justice's private estate without a federal warrant from the Supreme Court, Evelyn," Colonel Vance said, his face tightening. "The paperwork will take days. By then, they’ll destroy everything, and Daniel’s lawyers will have him out on a technicality."
"Then we don't use federal authority," I said, looking up at him, my eyes flashing with absolute resolve. "We use mine."
