Chapter 3 - The Counter-Strike

The day of Lily’s unicorn birthday party arrived. While Chloe was hosting a $2,300 extravaganza funded by my parents' stolen wealth, Sarah and I launched our counter-strike.

Sarah successfully secured an emergency temporary restraining order against Arthur, Eleanor, and Chloe, barring them from coming within 500 feet of me, Emma, or the hospital. With the legal protection in place, I decided it was time to address the court of public opinion.

I took a photo of Emma smiling weakly from her bed, holding her teddy bear, with the clear medical tubes still visible. I posted it on my Facebook page, tagging Chloe, my mother, and my father.

"Yesterday, my daughter Emma fought for her life in the ICU. My parents did not come to offer support or bring food. They came to demand $2,300 for my niece's birthday party. When I asked them to leave, my mother, Eleanor, physically ripped the oxygen mask off my daughter's face to punish me for not writing a check. The hospital monitors went off, the doctors rushed in, and my mother stated, 'She's gone now, you can come with us.'

I have spent my entire life protecting this family's secrets, covering up the emotional abuse and financial exploitation to maintain the illusion of 'family loyalty.' No more. The police have the footage. The courts have issued a restraining order. To everyone commenting on Chloe's post calling me unstable: the truth is coming, and it is recorded on video."

The internet exploded. Within two hours, the post had over 10,000 shares. The contrast between Chloe's glamorous updates from the unicorn party—complete with a rented pony and a chocolate fountain—and my photo of a child in the ICU was jarring.

People began putting two and two together. The backlash against Chloe’s post was instantaneous and fierce. Commenters began flooding her page, asking how she could celebrate a party paid for with blood money while her niece was nearly suffocated.

By mid-afternoon, my apartment building manager called me. "Hey, Maya... I just got a frantic call from your father demanding I change the locks on your apartment immediately. He said you're evicted."

"Did you do it?" I asked, my heart hammering.

"Hell no," the manager said. "I told him that without a formal, court-ordered 30-day eviction notice, that's highly illegal. Plus, I saw your post. What they did to Emma is monstrous. Your place is secure, Maya. I won't let them near it."

A small victory, but the war was far from over. That evening, Detective Harris called again. The local prosecutor had officially reviewed the ICU video.

"Maya, we've issued an arrest warrant for Eleanor Vance for felony child abuse and reckless endangerment. We're also citing Arthur Vance for conspiracy and tampering with a witness. They're going to be picked up tonight."
