Chapter 3 - The Confrontation at Gold Coast

The penthouse at 1000 Lake Shore Plaza was a monument to unearned luxury. Purchased six months ago through a complex web of LLCs funded entirely by the embezzled capital from Brooks Logistics, it featured panoramic views of Lake Michigan, white marble floors, and an expansive, designer-decorated nursery that had cost nearly eighty thousand dollars to construct.

At 2:00 PM that afternoon, the heavy double-doors of the penthouse were unlocked using a master corporate receiver’s key.

Daniel stood in the center of the living room, wearing a silk robe, a glass of morning juice in his hand. Mara was sitting on the plush white sofa, breastfeeding one of the twins while the other rocked in a motorized, high-end bassinet beside her. The air was filled with the scent of expensive baby lotion and fresh lavender.

"What the hell is the meaning of this?" Daniel roared as Christian Vance walked into the foyer, followed by three uniformed private security guards and a woman carrying a legal clipboard.

"Daniel!" Mara gasped, her face twisting into immediate panic as she pulled her silk shawl over her shoulder to cover herself. "Who are these people? Get them out of my apartment!"

"Daniel Brooks," Christian Sterling said, his voice cutting through the luxurious room like a blade of ice. "Actually, excuse me—Daniel Miller, since your right to use the Brooks family name has been legally terminated under the emergency separation decree served to you this morning."

"This is my apartment!" Daniel shouted, stepping forward, his face turning an angry, volatile red. "I am the Chief Operating Officer of Brooks Global Logistics! I don't care what kind of emotional breakdown Evelyn is having, she cannot send thugs into my private residence!"

"This isn't your residence, Mr. Miller," Christian said smoothly, sliding a certified Corporate Asset Seizure Notice onto the glass coffee table. "This penthouse was purchased by Apex Media Dynamics using seven hundred and eighty-four thousand dollars of stolen corporate capital. As of 8:00 AM, Apex Media has been placed under emergency corporate receivership. This property is now an active asset recovery zone."

Mara stood up from the sofa, her voice rising into a sharp, hysterical shriek. "Stolen? What are you talking about? Daniel told me this was part of his executive compensation package! He told me he earned this money through his restructuring bonuses!"

"He lied to you, Mara," Christian smiled, a cold, satisfied expression that made Mara’s knees tremble. "Your cousin’s company was a ghost entity used to funnel invoices for marketing services that were never rendered. The state prosecutor has already issued an arrest warrant for your cousin, and your name is listed as a primary co-conspirator on the asset routing logs."

Daniel’s breath caught in his throat, his arrogant posture collapsing into a frantic, cornered panic. He looked at the security guards, who were already beginning to place red security tags on the expensive modern art pieces and the designer electronics in the room.

"Christian, listen to me," Daniel stammered, his voice losing its booming, authoritative edge, dropping into a desperate whisper. "Evelyn doesn't want to do this. Think about the public relations damage to the company. If the papers find out about the fraud, the stock price will crater. Let me talk to her. We can work out a private restructuring agreement. I’ll sign over my shares—"

"You don't have any shares, Daniel," I said, stepping into the penthouse foyer from behind the security guards.

I wore a sharp, tailored midnight-blue suit, my hair falling in immaculate, cold waves around my shoulders. My face was completely serene, completely devoid of the tears and heartbreak Daniel had spent twelve years train me to produce.

"Evelyn..." Daniel whispered, his face turning an ashen, sickly grey as he took a step back toward the sofa.

Mara stared at me, her eyes full of a feral, defensive hatred. "Evelyn, you can’t do this to us! We have babies! A boy and a girl! You know what it’s like to lose a child... how can you be so cruel to two innocent newborns? Daniel deserves to be a father! He deserves the family you couldn't give him!"

I looked at Mara—the woman who had slept in my guest room, the woman who had watched me weep over empty cribs—and I felt absolutely nothing but a cold, clinical disgust.

"You're right, Mara," I said softly, my voice carrying a terrifying, crystal-clear resonance that filled the high-ceilinged room. "I do know what it’s like to lose a child. And I know what it’s like to carry a guilt that didn't belong to me for twelve long years."

I turned my gaze to Daniel, whose eyes were wide with a sudden, horrific realization.

"The security guards will assist you in packing two suitcases of personal clothing, Mara," I continued, my voice level and unbreakable. "The penthouse will be locked and sealed within thirty minutes. The luxury SUV in the garage has already been repossessed by the corporate fleet manager."

"Evelyn, please!" Daniel cried out, reaching his hands toward me, but a security guard immediately stepped between us, his arm resting firmly on his utility belt. "Don't do this in front of my kids! Let’s go to the office and talk like adults!"

"The office doesn't belong to you anymore, Daniel," I said, turning on my heel and walking out into the elevator corridor. "And neither do those children."
