Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Excavation

The next morning, the corporate headquarters of Crestwood Design Group sat high above Manhattan, bathed in the sharp, unforgiving light of a winter morning.
I stood inside the executive boardroom, looking at the long, polished walnut table. For two years, I had allowed Dominic to sit at the head of this table, believing his ambitious, aggressive management style was what our family company needed to survive in the modern market. I had stayed in my studio, focusing on design, while he slowly replaced our loyal financial officers with his own family allies.
At 10:00 AM, the glass doors of the boardroom slid open.
My attorney, Evelyn Pierce—the most feared family law and corporate litigation expert in the state—walked in, carrying three heavy leather binders. Behind her came my father’s old business partner, Thomas, who had served as our chief financial officer before Dominic forced him into an early retirement.
“Audrey,” Evelyn said, her voice carrying a crisp, professional warmth. “The civil injunctions have been served. The court has approved the immediate freeze on all corporate accounts associated with Dominic, Victoria, and Natalie Vance. We have successfully locked them out of the mainframe.”
“What about the board?” I asked, taking my seat at the head of the table.
“The board is terrified,” Thomas said, a quiet, satisfied smile touching his face. “They’ve seen the news reports of Dominic’s arrest. They realize that if they don't cooperate with you, they will be named as co-conspirators in the white-collar embezzlement suit we are preparing to file.”
Within ten minutes, the remaining five board members filed into the room. They walked with their heads down, their usual corporate arrogance completely gone, replaced by a nervous, quiet compliance.
“Thank you for coming, gentlemen,” I began, my voice clear and steady. I didn't need to yell. The sheer weight of the evidence resting on the table before me was loud enough.
“We are here to vote on the immediate termination of Dominic Vance’s employment contract as Managing Partner of Crestwood Design Group,” I said, sliding the black folder across the polished wood. “The grounds for termination are gross moral turpitude, financial embezzlement of corporate funds, and active corporate espionage.”
“Audrey,” one of the older board members, Harold, stammered, his hands shaking as he adjusted his glasses. “We had no idea Dominic was transferring funds to his mother’s consulting firm. We trusted his financial reports.”
“You trusted them because you didn't bother to audit them, Harold,” I said, looking straight into his eyes. “You allowed a thief to run this company because he made you feel comfortable. But the comfort is over. If any of you vote against this termination, Evelyn will have your personal financial records subpoenaed by the district attorney’s office by 3:00 PM today.”
Harold didn't hesitate. He raised his hand. Within three seconds, all five board members raised their hands in unanimous agreement.
“The termination is approved,” Evelyn Pierce announced, her pen making a sharp, final stroke across the corporate resolution. “Dominic Vance is officially stripped of all corporate titles, shares, and golden parachute options. His equity is officially forfeited to satisfy the restitution demands of the Crestwood Family Trust.”
As the board members quickly gathered their papers and scurried out of the room, Thomas walked over to the glass wall, looking out at the city below.
“Your father would be incredibly proud of you, Audrey,” Thomas said softly. “He always knew you had the strength to run this empire. He only regretted that you had to learn it through such a painful path.”
“The path is behind me, Thomas,” I said, looking down at my hands. They were steady. For two years, I had felt like a guest in my own life, a quiet observer of my own destruction. But today, the blueprint was mine again.
“What’s the next step, Evelyn?” I asked, turning to my attorney.
“The criminal trial for domestic battery and embezzlement starts in three weeks,” Evelyn said, her eyes burning with a sharp, professional intensity. “Dominic’s defense attorney is going to try to paint you as a bitter, vengeful wife who set him up. But they don't realize we have a secret weapon they never saw coming.”

“Who?” I asked.
“Chloe,” Evelyn smiled. “Your former assistant. She’s agreed to testify for the state in exchange for immunity from the corporate fraud charges. She’s ready to tell the jury exactly how Dominic used her to access your private trust codes.”
