Chapter 6 - The Vault Beneath the Stone

By 8:00 PM the following evening, the estate felt like an armed fortress preparing for a siege.
Heavy steel shutters had been lowered over every window on the ground floor. Forty heavily armed men in tactical gear moved across the grounds, checking weapons, adjusting radio frequencies, and mounting high-caliber rifles on the roof perimeters.
Down in the subterranean wine cellar, Reggie opened a heavy, six-inch-thick steel door disguised behind a wall of vintage wine racks.
Inside was a fully furnished living space equipped with leather sofas, independent air filtration systems, medical supplies, and enough food and water to last a month.
"In you go, ladies," Reggie said, his face grave as he held the heavy door open.
I walked in, holding Brinley close to my hip. Mrs. Gable followed, carrying a bag of Brinley’s favorite toys and a thermos of warm tea.
Brinley looked around the concrete-lined bunker with wide eyes. "Mommy, are we playing hide and seek again?"
"Yes, baby," I forced a smile, sitting her down on the leather couch and setting her teddy bear beside her. "We're playing a big game of hide and seek with Mr. Reggie."
Reggie stood in the doorway, his eyes darting toward the stairs leading up to the main house. "I'll be standing guard outside this door, Clara. The security monitors inside connected to the perimeter cameras are active on that desk. If anything goes wrong upstairs, the primary door seals automatically."
"Where is Jude?" I asked, unable to keep the anxiety out of my voice.
"The Boss left for Pawtucket twenty minutes ago," Reggie replied. "He took twenty men with him. The rest of us are holding the house."
"Is he going to be okay?"
Reggie looked at me, a rare, respect-filled expression passing over his weathered face. "The Boss has survived three assassination attempts, two car bombs, and a war that claimed his entire family. But tonight... tonight he’s fighting for something he hasn't had in fifteen years."
"What's that?"
"A home," Reggie said softly. "Keep the little girl safe, Clara."
With a heavy, metallic thud, the vault door swung shut, locking us inside the subterranean sanctuary. The silence that followed was heavy and absolute.
I walked over to the desk near the corner of the bunker, where four high-definition monitors displayed live feeds from the estate's security cameras. Rain was pouring over the property outside, sheets of gray water whipping across the black iron gates.

Brinley sat on the sofa, happily arranging her wooden blocks with Mrs. Gable, completely oblivious to the war raging across the state.
I leaned over the monitors, watching the quiet gates, praying to a God I hadn't spoken to in years that Jude Mercer would make it back alive.
