Chapter 6 - The New Skyline

Six Months Later

The summer sun over Chicago was brilliant and hot, turning the expanse of Lake Michigan into a sheet of dancing silver. On the thirty-second floor of the Whitcomb Grand, the penthouse windows were wide open, letting in the warm breeze and the distant, vibrant sound of the city below.

Odessa stood by the window, no longer wearing the oversized navy scrubs or the cheap sneakers of a hotel maid. She wore a tailored, emerald-green dress that complemented her dark hair, and her face carried the calm, resilient peace of a woman who no longer worried about the lights being turned off.

She was the newly appointed Director of Guest Welfare and Staff Integration for the entire Kane Group—a position Theo had created to ensure that no worker in his hotels would ever be treated as expendable again. Her sister, Nova, was currently sitting at the marble counter, studying for her college midterms with a stack of textbooks and a bright, happy smile.

A pair of strong arms wrapped around Odessa’s waist from behind.

Theo Kane pressed his face against her shoulder, his chest warm and solid against her back. He wasn't wearing his heavy wool sweaters anymore; he wore a crisp white linen shirt, the top buttons undone to let in the summer air. His gray eyes were still unseeing, but they were no longer empty. They were filled with the peace of a man who had finally reclaimed his home.

“You’re staring at the lake again,” Theo murmured against her skin, his low voice rumbling through her chest.

“It looks like glass today,” she smiled, turning around in his arms, her hands rising to rest flat against his chest, right over his steady, strong heart. “The good kind of glass. The kind that doesn't break when the wind hits it.”

Theo smiled, his large hand reaching up to trace the line of her jawline with a tenderness that still made her breath catch. He didn't need eyes to see the beauty in her face; he knew every curve, every line, every emotion by the sound of her breath and the warmth of her skin.

“The board approved the new employee healthcare fund this morning,” Theo said, his fingers looping through hers, their hands locking tightly together against his shirt. “Every housekeeper, every busboy, every line cook now has full medical coverage. No more aunt’s basements, Odessa. No more hiding in the dark.”

Tears pricked the corners of Odessa’s eyes, but she wiped them away with a small, happy laugh. “You’re a very expensive boyfriend, Theo Kane.”

“I’m a very lucky man, Odessa Callaway,” he corrected softly, leaning down until his lips met hers in a deep, lingering kiss that tasted of the sweet summer wind and a promise that had outlived the winter.

The hotel staff downstairs no longer whispered about the "maid who went into the lion's den." They looked up at the penthouse with a quiet respect, knowing that the empire was no longer run by wolves, but by a king who had learned to see in the dark, and the woman who had given him his eyes back.

Odessa rested her head against Theo’s shoulder, looking out at the endless blue horizon, knowing that as long as they held onto each other, the skyline would always belong to them.
