Chapter 2 – Learning to Listen

The restaurant had fallen completely silent.

Daniel stared at Oliver, then at Sophie.

His hands trembled as he looked at Arya.

"Is that true?" he asked quietly.

Arya turned to the twins and signed the question.

Oliver nodded immediately.

Sophie hesitated before slowly nodding too.

Tears welled in Daniel's eyes.

"For how long?" he whispered.

Arya translated again.

Oliver held up four fingers.

"Four years," Arya said softly.

"He says Mrs. Harrison told them every week that if they signed too much, talked too loudly with their hands, or made you look embarrassed, you'd send them to a boarding school where children never came home."

Daniel closed his eyes.

He had believed his children had simply become distant.

He never imagined someone had been teaching them to fear him.

Mrs. Harrison finally found her voice.

"Mr. Reed, they're children. They misunderstand things."

Arya looked directly at Daniel.

"They don't misunderstand sign language."

"They're telling the truth."

Daniel stood.

For the first time in years, his children saw their father kneel before them.

Slowly, awkwardly, he lifted his own hands.

He remembered only one sign.

A word he had learned when they were babies but never practiced again.

He signed,

I'm... sorry.

His movements were clumsy.

Incomplete.

But Oliver recognized them instantly.

The little boy burst into tears and threw his arms around his father.

Sophie followed a second later.

Daniel held both children tightly as tears streamed down his face.

"I'm so sorry," he whispered over and over.

"I should have learned."

"I should have listened."

That night, he asked Arya one question before she left.

"Will you help me become the father they deserve?"

Arya smiled gently.

"If you're willing to learn..."

"I'll teach you."

Over the next several weeks, Daniel never missed a lesson.

Every morning before work.

Every evening before dinner.

Every weekend.

Board meetings became shorter.

Family dinners became longer.

For the first time, laughter filled the Reed penthouse.

May you like

And it wasn't spoken.

It danced through smiling hands.
