Chapter 9 - The Harbor King's New Kingdom

Two months later.

The dark, gloomy winter garden of the Marino estate was no longer a silent, prison-like sanctuary of marble fountains and cold stone.

The heavy black drapes had been torn down, allowing radiant, golden sunlight to flood every corner of the massive glass structure. The quiet, monotonous drip of the fountain was now drowned out by the cheerful sounds of children playing, music playing from high-end speakers, and the joyful chatter of a family reborn.

I had transformed the East Wing of the estate into a state-of-the-art neurosurgical research facility, fully funded by the Marino Foundation, naming Dr. Arthur Vance as the chief medical director. Together, we were working to provide free, advanced treatments to paralyzed patients and children with rare neurological conditions across the world.

Maria Ross was no longer the head housekeeper; she was now the executive director of the foundation’s charitable branch, managing millions of dollars in aid for underprivileged families.

I stood on the mezzanine balcony of the garden, leaning against the wrought-iron railing, holding a cup of hot espresso.

Beside me stood Anton, dressed in a relaxed navy blazer, a rare, subtle smile touching his lips as we looked down at the courtyard below.

Down on the bright mosaic floor, Leo was sitting at a new grand piano, practicing a classical piece with intense concentration, while his father, Arthur, sat beside him turning the sheet music.

And in the center of the room, wearing a bright yellow dress and silver glitter sneakers, was Lily. She was dancing wildly across the polished stone, holding a microphone, singing at the top of her lungs to a loud pop song, completely unbothered by whether she was on key or off-beat.

"She still dances terribly, Boss," Anton remarked dryly, taking a sip of his coffee.

"She dances like someone who isn't afraid of the world, Anton," I corrected softly, watching the little girl spin around until she fell onto a pile of plush velvet throw pillows, laughing hysterically. "That's not terrible. That's perfect."

Anton nodded quietly. "The dock reports came in from Brooklyn this morning, Mr. Marino. The new security grid is online. Shipping volume is up thirty percent. The Harbor King’s empire is stronger than it’s ever been."

I looked out through the glass roof at the bright blue sky above. "The empire doesn't matter anymore, Anton. This room does."
