137 The Boy Beneath the Streetlight

“Mom… that kid…”

The woman almost kept walking.

It was a busy Manhattan sidewalk, all cold light and fast footsteps, yellow taxis sliding past like nothing in the world ever truly stopped.

But her son had stopped.

He was staring toward a street pole near the curb.

A homeless boy sat there with his back against it, barefoot on the concrete, knees bruised, hoodie hanging loose off his thin frame.

He looked up.

And for one impossible second, the woman forgot how to breathe.

Because he looked like her son.

Not a little.

Not vaguely.

The same eyes.

The same mouth.

The same shape of his face.

Her son stepped forward first, confused and almost frightened.

“He looks like me.”

The homeless boy slowly stood up.

He didn’t beg.

He didn’t say a word.

He just reached up to the tarnished locket around his neck and carefully removed it, like he had been waiting for this moment too long to rush it.

The woman’s hand tightened on her son’s shoulder.

The rich boy opened the locket.

Inside were two tiny photos.

And beneath them, in worn lettering:

“To our twin sons.”

The boy’s hands started shaking.

His voice came out small.

“Mom… tell me what this means.”

The woman’s sunglasses slipped slightly down her nose.

Her lips trembled.

Tears rose before she could stop them.

“That can’t be…”

The homeless boy looked at her with tired, guarded eyes.

Then he whispered the one word she had spent years trying not to hear in her sleep.

May you like

“Mother?”
