CHAPTER FOUR: THE SHOT THAT SAVED A FAMILY

CHAPTER FOUR: THE SHOT THAT SAVED A FAMILY

The first person to notice the red laser wasn't Amelia.

It wasn't Claire.

It wasn't even the federal marshals standing near the ballroom entrance.

It was Alexander.

For a split second, he thought it was a reflection from one of the crystal chandeliers.

Then the tiny crimson dot moved.

It settled directly over Claire's heart.

His blood ran cold.

"DOWN!"

Alexander lunged across the marble floor with every ounce of strength he had.

At the exact same instant—

POP!

The muffled sound was barely louder than a champagne cork.

The bullet sliced through the air.

Instead of striking Claire's chest, it tore through the sleeve of Alexander's tuxedo, grazing his upper arm before burying itself in a marble column behind them.

Guests screamed.

Crystal glasses shattered.

People dropped beneath tables.

The orchestra scattered in panic.

Within seconds, the ballroom erupted into chaos.

"Protect Amelia!"

Federal Marshal Ethan Brooks drew his weapon before the echo of the suppressed shot had faded.

"LOCK EVERY EXIT!"

The marshals spread through the ballroom with astonishing speed.

Security officers tackled guests to the floor as they searched for the shooter.

Another laser flashed.

A second shot rang out.

POP!

This one struck a chandelier cable.

Thousands of glittering crystals crashed onto the dance floor, sending guests scrambling in every direction.

Someone shouted,

"He's trying to escape through the service hallway!"

Three marshals sprinted after the fleeing figure.

Amelia ignored every scream around her.

She had only one thought.

Her mother.

She threw herself toward Claire just as another shower of broken crystal rained from above.

Claire wrapped both arms around her daughter instinctively.

For the first time in twenty-eight years...

Mother and daughter embraced.

Neither spoke.

Neither needed to.

Both simply cried.

Richard Lancaster collapsed to his knees.

"Claire..."

His voice broke.

"My little girl..."

Claire slowly looked up.

The years had changed him.

His once-commanding posture had faded.

His hair had turned completely white.

His eyes...

Still held the same kindness she remembered from childhood.

She whispered,

"Dad..."

Richard crawled the remaining distance between them.

"I'm sorry."

He could barely breathe.

"I searched."

"I hired investigators."

"I was told you were dead."

"They showed me documents."

"They showed me..."

His voice disappeared beneath sobs.

Claire gently held his face.

"I know."

"You know?"

She nodded.

"Daniel found your letters."

Richard blinked.

"What letters?"

"The ones you wrote every birthday."

The old man's entire body trembled.

"I wrote one every year."

"I know."

"I've read every one."

Richard stared at her in disbelief.

"You have?"

Claire smiled through tears.

"Daniel risked everything to bring them to me."

Richard buried his face against her shoulder and wept openly.

The most powerful businessman in the state looked like nothing more than a grieving father.

Meanwhile...

The chase continued through the sprawling Lancaster estate.

The masked gunman sprinted through the kitchens.

Across loading docks.

Past delivery trucks.

He knew the property.

Too well.

Marshal Brooks narrowed his eyes.

"He's been here before."

The shooter reached the underground parking garage.

A black SUV waited with its engine already running.

Before he could climb inside—

"Federal Marshals!"

"DROP THE WEAPON!"

Instead, the gunman fired twice.

The marshals returned fire.

Bullets ricocheted off concrete pillars.

The SUV accelerated toward the exit.

Then—

CRASH!

A black armored sedan slammed sideways into the escaping vehicle.

Airbags exploded.

The SUV spun violently before striking a support column.

Smoke filled the garage.

The driver's door burst open.

The gunman stumbled out.

He managed only three steps before marshals tackled him to the ground.

His pistol skidded across the concrete.

Handcuffs clicked into place.

Back inside the ballroom...

Margaret Ellis received a message through her phone.

She looked toward Amelia.

"They caught him."

The room released a collective breath.

But Margaret wasn't smiling.

She continued reading.

Then her expression changed.

"What is it?" Amelia asked.

Margaret slowly looked up.

"He isn't a professional assassin."

"Who is he?"

She hesitated.

"He worked for Lancaster Holdings."

Richard frowned.

"What department?"

"Executive Security."

Eleanor closed her eyes.

As though she already knew.

Minutes later...

The captured gunman was escorted into the ballroom.

His face was bruised.

His expensive suit torn.

Guests gasped.

Several executives recognized him immediately.

Richard stood frozen.

"No..."

The prisoner lowered his head.

Former Chief of Security.

Michael Donovan.

Richard had trusted him for fifteen years.

Michael laughed bitterly.

"I guess retirement will have to wait."

Marshal Brooks shoved him into a chair.

"Who hired you?"

Michael remained silent.

Brooks repeated,

"Who gave the order?"

Nothing.

Then...

A familiar voice answered instead.

"I did."

The ballroom froze.

Every head turned.

The voice had come from Eleanor Lancaster.

Richard stared at his wife in horror.

"Eleanor..."

She looked strangely calm.

"No more lies."

"Eleanor!"

She ignored him.

"I hired Michael."

Gasps rippled through the ballroom.

"I told him that if Claire ever returned..."

"...she could never leave alive."

Amelia felt Claire's grip tighten around her hand.

Richard whispered,

"Why?"

Eleanor laughed softly.

Not with joy.

With exhaustion.

"You still don't understand."

"No."

"You never did."

She slowly removed her diamond necklace.

Then another bracelet.

Then her earrings.

Each piece landed on the marble with a sharp metallic sound.

"Everyone believes money corrupts people."

She looked around the room.

"It doesn't."

"It reveals them."

She turned toward Amelia.

"I never hated you."

Amelia frowned.

"You destroyed my life."

"I was trying to save this family."

"By stealing a child?"

"By lying?"

"By murder?"

Eleanor closed her eyes.

"You think that was where it began?"

She shook her head.

"No."

"It started forty years ago."

She slowly faced Richard.

"Tell them."

Richard looked confused.

"Tell them where Lancaster Holdings came from."

Silence.

"I..."

"You promised we'd never speak of it."

Richard lowered his head.

"I know."

"But the truth belongs to her now."

Richard took a long, shaking breath.

"My father..."

"...didn't build Lancaster Holdings."

The room went silent.

"He stole it."

Shock swept through the guests.

Richard continued.

"The original company belonged to Daniel Carter's grandfather."

"It collapsed during the recession."

"My father manipulated the bankruptcy."

"He acquired everything for almost nothing."

"He promised to return part of the company."

"He never did."

Margaret quietly nodded.

"We confirmed that."

Richard looked devastated.

"Our fortune..."

"...was built on betrayal."

Eleanor spoke again.

"When Claire married Daniel..."

"...Daniel discovered the original ownership records."

"He wanted the company returned."

Richard nodded miserably.

"He was right."

"But your son..."

She stopped.

Her voice trembled for the first time.

"Edward refused."

Alexander stiffened.

"My father?"

Eleanor nodded.

"He believed losing the company would destroy the family."

"So he created another plan."

Amelia felt her heart pounding.

"What plan?"

Eleanor answered through tears.

"He separated you from Claire."

"He framed Daniel."

"He convinced everyone Claire had died."

Richard whispered,

"No..."

"He couldn't."

Eleanor looked at him sadly.

"He did."

Alexander staggered backward.

"My father..."

"He ordered all this?"

"Yes."

"He murdered Daniel?"

"I don't know."

"But after Daniel died..."

"...Edward controlled everything."

Alexander's world collapsed.

Every childhood memory.

Every lesson about honor.

Every lecture about protecting family.

All built upon lies.

Marshal Brooks approached with another file.

"We've identified the final payment to Michael Donovan."

He placed the document on the table.

"The transfer wasn't authorized by Eleanor."

Everyone stared.

"It was made yesterday."

Margaret frowned.

"But Edward has been dead for twelve years."

Brooks nodded.

"Exactly."

"There was another signature."

Amelia looked at the page.

Her eyes widened.

The transfer had been approved by—

Victoria Ashcroft Lancaster.

The bride.

Everyone turned.

Victoria was gone.

The ballroom doors stood open.

Her wedding bouquet still lay abandoned on the marble floor.

Outside...

The sound of tires screeching echoed through the night.

Victoria had fled.

Margaret whispered,

"Oh, no..."

Amelia looked confused.

"What?"

Margaret's face had turned pale.

"If Victoria authorized the payment..."

"...then this wasn't the end of the conspiracy."

She slowly looked toward Eleanor.

"Someone has been continuing Edward's work."

Eleanor closed her eyes.

Then whispered the words that chilled everyone in the room.

"I warned my granddaughter never to read her father's journals."

Richard frowned.

"What journals?"

Eleanor answered,

"Because Edward wrote down..."

"...every secret."

"And Victoria inherited every single one."

At that exact moment, every television screen inside the ballroom flickered once more.

The image changed to a live security camera feed from Lancaster Manor.

On the screen, Victoria was running through the mansion's private library.

She dropped to her knees before a hidden wall safe concealed behind an enormous oil painting.

Her hands shook as she entered the combination.

The heavy steel door slowly opened.

Inside...

There wasn't money.

There weren't jewels.

There wasn't gold.

There was only a thick black leather journal.

Embossed in faded silver letters were seven words that made Richard Lancaster nearly collapse.

EDWARD LANCASTER — IF ANYTHING HAPPENS TO ME

Victoria grabbed the journal...

Just as the mansion lights suddenly went dark.

Then a man's voice echoed through the security system.

Calm.

Cold.

Terrifying.

"You should have left that where your father hid it."

Victoria froze.

The camera feed filled with static.

May you like

Then went completely black.
