Three months later...
The courtroom was packed.
Medical photographs showed Ethan's burned hand.
Doctors testified that the injury could have caused permanent damage if treatment had been delayed.
Then Tyler took the witness stand.
His small voice echoed through the courtroom.
"Ethan didn't push me."
"I tripped."
"My grandma hurt him."
Several jurors wiped away tears.
Carol refused to apologize.
"I was raising him the way children used to be raised."
The prosecutor looked directly at her.
"Burning a seven-year-old with heated metal isn't discipline."
"It's abuse."
The jury deliberated for less than two hours.
Guilty.
Carol received probation, mandatory counseling, community service, and a permanent court order prohibiting unsupervised contact with Ethan.
Outside the courthouse, reporters surrounded Daniel.
"Do you regret pressing charges against your own mother?"
He answered simply.
"No."
"My first responsibility has never been protecting adults from consequences."
"It has always been protecting my son."
