Part 3: The Secret Underground

I sprinted down the familiar path where Olivia and I used to walk hand-in-hand every evening. But the landscape felt warped, alien. The branches seemed to twist maliciously, and thorny briars tore at my jeans.
The faint cry of "Ethan..." kept drifting further away, guiding me toward a sunken ravine deep in the woods—the site of an old Cold War-era concrete fallout shelter we had never fully explored. The rusted iron door was wide open, and a draft carrying a mix of damp earth and… Olivia’s signature lavender perfume wafted out.
I shone the flashlight down the steep, crumbling concrete steps. At the bottom, the faint, warm glow of candlelight flickered.
"Olivia?" I stepped down, one agonizing step at a time, my breath ragged.
When my boots hit the floor of the bunker, the sight before me stole the air from my lungs. Plastered across the concrete walls were hundreds of surveillance photographs of Olivia and me, taken from a distance. Some were from years ago in the city, while others showed me pulling up to the cottage just thirty minutes prior.
In the center of the room stood a makeshift wooden desk. On it sat a red leather journal—the exact diary Olivia had kept by her side during her final days in the hospital wing.
With trembling hands, I approached the desk and flipped the journal open. On the very last page, Olivia’s handwriting was frantic, scrawled in a desperate rush:
"Ethan, if you are reading this, it means they found you. The hospital was a lie. I didn’t die of an illness. They took me. Find Emma and Ella, they are the key. Do not trust the—"
The sentence cut off, smeared by a dark, dried streak of blood.
A heavy thud echoed behind me. I spun around, my flashlight beam catching a figure standing at the bunker's entrance. He wore tactical medical scrubs, his face completely hidden behind a respirator mask. In his hand, he raised a pneumatic tranquilizer rifle.

"Mr. Brooks," a muffled, gravelly voice echoed through the mask. "You really shouldn't have come back. You should have just listened to the 'closure' advice from the therapist we provided for you."
The truth hit me like a physical blow. My wife’s death, my grief, the therapist—it was all a meticulously manufactured script orchestrated by an shadow organization.
