Chapter 2 - The Arrival of the Vultures

By 9:00 a.m., the rain had stopped, replaced by a thick, freezing fog that rolled off the lake.

My phone had been vibrating continuously for two hours. First it was Mark, then his mother, Evelyn, and finally, the heavy, booming caller ID of his father, Richard Sterling. I didn't answer a single call. I let them stew in their own confusion. They had likely arrived at the penthouse expecting to find me weeping over a half-cooked breakfast, begging for mercy. Instead, they had found an empty apartment, an untouched dining table, and a cold stove.

At 10:15 a.m., a text message arrived from Mark.

Mark: Nora, where the hell are you? My parents are here. The apartment is empty, and you didn't finish the catering. My mother is furious. You took Toby. If you don't bring him back right now, I will file kidnapping charges. Don't play games with me.

I smiled as I read it. Kidnapping. The classic empty threat of a man who had never read a family law statute in his life.

I typed a single, brief reply.

Nora: I am at a safe location with our son. My attorney will be in touch with your legal representative by noon. Do not contact me again.

Within thirty seconds, my phone rang. I declined it and immediately forwarded his number to a temporary blackhole service I had set up.

“He’s panicking,” I said to Mrs. Henderson, who was currently preparing a bottle of formula for Toby. “He’s used to me apologizing. Every time we had an argument, even when he was clearly in the wrong, I was the one who smoothed it over to keep the peace. He thinks this is just another tantrum.”

“Let him think that,” she said, handing me the warm bottle. “But you need a lawyer, Nora. Not just any lawyer. You need someone who isn't afraid of the Sterling name.”

“I’ve already contacted Arthur Vance,” I said, cradling Toby as he began to stir, his tiny mouth opening like a little bird. “He’s the founding partner of Vance & Sterling. He’s been retired for five years, but he still holds a grudge against Richard Sterling for squeezing him out of the partnership.”

“Arthur?” Mrs. Henderson’s eyebrows shot up. “The silver fox of corporate litigation? If you get him on board, Mark’s legal team won't even know what hit them. But Arthur doesn't work for free, Nora. Even with his grudge, he’s a businessman.”

“He won't be working for free,” I said, gently feeding Toby. “I’m going to offer him fifty percent of whatever we recover from the Sterling Group's hidden reserves. And believe me, Arthur is going to find those numbers very, very attractive.”

The Audit BeginsWhile Toby fed, I kept my eyes on the screen.

My forensic audit was focusing on a series of wire transfers made over the last eight months from the Sterling Group Real Estate Fund to a mysterious entity called Aurora Holdings LLC, registered in the state of Delaware. Delaware was famous for its anonymity laws, but they weren't completely bulletproof to someone who knew how to trace international banking routing transits.

The sole manager of Aurora Holdings LLC was listed as a corporate shell company in the Cayman Islands. But the authorized signature on the Delaware bank account was what caught my eye.

It wasn't Mark's signature.

It was a signature I recognized all too well from the legal documents of our penthouse purchase.

Chloe Davenport.

Chloe was Mark’s "executive assistant." A young, ambitious woman whom Evelyn had personally vetted and recommended for the position. She was always present at family gatherings, looking a little too comfortable in our home, her eyes lingering on Mark a little too long.

“So, it wasn't just a sudden whim,” I whispered, my voice cold. “Mark was planning this for months. He was systematically draining the corporate accounts, funneling the money to his mistress under the guise of 'marketing consultancy fees,' and preparing to leave me with a tiny fraction of our marital wealth.”

“He was stealing from his own family’s business to set up his next life with Chloe,” Mrs. Henderson concluded, her voice dark. “Richard Sterling is a proud, ruthless man. If he finds out his son has been stealing millions from the family firm to fund his mistress, he’ll destroy Mark himself.”

“Exactly,” I said, setting Toby down after he burped. “But I’m not going to tell Richard. Not yet. I’m going to let Mark dig his own grave first.”
