Chapter 7 - THE BRIDGE OF SECRETS

The demolition site was evacuated twenty minutes before noon.
Police found unauthorized explosives attached beneath the western support structure. If detonated during the public ceremony, the blast would have reached the viewing platform where victims’ families, reporters, and state officials were supposed to stand.
Victor had planned to erase the remaining physical evidence while creating another tragedy large enough to bury the first.
But Victor was nowhere on the site.
Neither was the helicopter.
Caleb studied an old engineering map at the command center.
“There’s a maintenance tunnel under the northern embankment,” he told Ortiz. “It leads to the original foundation chamber.”
“Could Victor access it?”
“He designed the security system.”
Katherine stepped forward.
“I know the chamber.”
Caleb turned to her.
“You worked there?”
“I inspected it before the collapse.”
“You’re not going near that site,” Grace said.
Katherine looked at her.
“There may be workers inside who don’t know about the explosives.”
“Police can evacuate them.”
“They won’t understand the foundation layout. Half the tunnel markings were changed during construction.”
Caleb shook his head.
“I’ll go.”
Katherine’s expression hardened.
“This is not your chance to become a hero.”
“I know.”
“Do you?”
Caleb met her eyes.
“I’m not trying to earn your forgiveness. I’m trying to stop the man I helped.”
Katherine looked away.
Ortiz made the decision.
Both Caleb and Katherine would guide the bomb squad remotely using separate copies of the engineering plans. Neither would enter the tunnel.
For the next thirty minutes, they sat at different tables inside the command vehicle.
Katherine identified the old pressure vents.
Caleb explained Victor’s security modifications.
Together, without speaking directly, they led officers through the underground structure.
At 11:52, the first explosive device was disabled.
At 11:56, officers found two maintenance workers bound inside a utility room.
At 11:59, the final detonation cable was cut.
A cheer rose outside the command vehicle.
Grace closed her eyes and thanked God.
Then every monitor went black.
A message appeared across the central screen.
YOU CANNOT DISABLE WHAT YOU CANNOT FIND.
Victor’s face appeared.
He was broadcasting from somewhere dark.
“You always were intelligent, Katherine,” he said. “It was unfortunate that intelligence came without loyalty.”
Katherine leaned toward the monitor.
“Where are you?”
Victor smiled.
“Ask your husband.”
Caleb searched the background behind Victor.
Concrete walls.
Rust-colored pipes.
A faded blue warning sign.
His expression changed.
“The water-control station.”
Katherine turned toward him.
“There isn’t a water-control station on the public plans.”
“It was built beneath the original river channel. Victor used it to redirect water while constructing the foundation.”
“What happens if he destroys it?”
Caleb looked at the river.
“The northern retaining wall fails.”
Ortiz understood immediately.
The demolition site was no longer the main target.
The town below the riverbank was.
Victor held up a detonator.
“One confession,” he said. “That is all I ever wanted.”
He demanded that Katherine appear on camera and admit she had falsified the Dunmore reports. In exchange, he promised to surrender the detonator.
“No,” Caleb said.
Victor laughed.
“You already forced her to confess once.”
Caleb’s face twisted with shame.
Katherine stood before the camera.
Grace grabbed her arm.
“You cannot give him what he wants.”
“I’m not.”
Katherine looked directly into the lens.
“My name is Katherine Monroe Ward. Three years ago, I discovered that Hale Construction had installed defective supports beneath the Dunmore River Overpass.”
Victor’s smile faded.
“I submitted a report warning that the structure was unsafe. Victor Hale replaced the final page, ordered employees to continue construction, and threatened anyone who objected.”
“Katherine,” Victor warned.
She continued.
“He caused the collapse. He kidnapped Beatrice Holloway. He forced Lily Holloway to alter company records. And today, he tried to frame my husband.”
Caleb flinched at the word husband.
Not because it gave him hope.
Because Katherine had spoken it without affection, as a legal fact.
Victor raised the detonator.
“You have ten seconds to correct your statement.”
Katherine did not move.
“No.”
The countdown began.
Ten.
Caleb stared at the old utility map.
Nine.
“The control station has two exits,” he said.
Eight.
“One leads to the river.”
Seven.
“The other leads into the demolished foundation.”
Six.
Caleb grabbed a police radio.
“Search the eastern drainage pipe!”
Five.
Officers ran.
Four.
Victor’s broadcast shook as a loud sound came from behind him.
Three.
A woman shouted.
Two.
Victor spun around.
Lily appeared on the screen and struck the detonator from his hand.
One.
The broadcast ended.
For several seconds, no one knew whether the explosives had activated.
Then Ortiz’s radio crackled.
“Suspect in custody. Detonator secured.”
Grace began to cry.
Katherine covered her face.
Caleb remained motionless.
Victor Hale had finally been captured.
But when Caleb turned toward Katherine, she was already walking away.
Outside, beneath the flashing lights and morning sun, she removed the wedding ring from her finger.
She placed it in his palm.
“I helped save the town with you,” she said.
May you like
Caleb closed his fingers around the ring.
“But I cannot go home with you.”
