Chapter 4 - The Escalation

By Friday morning, the threat had materialized into legal reality. Claire was sitting in her small living room when a courier knocked on the door, delivering a thick white envelope.
It was an official summons from the Marion County Family Court. Derek Vance had filed an emergency petition for establishing paternity, mandatory visitation, and temporary primary custody, citing Claire’s financial instability and alleging an "unstable domestic environment involving third-party male visitors."
Claire immediately called Ethan. She didn't want to drag him into her mess, but Derek’s petition specifically mentioned a "wealthy benefactor providing non-traditional financial support under suspicious circumstances."
Within thirty minutes, a black corporate sedan arrived to pick up Claire and Sophie, bringing them straight to the legal offices of Cole Innovation Group.
Ethan was waiting for her in a private conference room, accompanied by Marcus Vance (no relation to Derek), the company’s chief legal counsel, a sharp-eyed attorney who looked as though he had never lost a battle in his life.
"I am so sorry, Ethan," Claire said, holding Sophie tightly against her chest. "I never meant for my past to touch your life or your company. I can resign if this is going to cause a public relations problem for you."
"Sit down, Claire," Ethan said gently, pushing a cup of tea toward her. His eyes were dark with an intense, quiet fury, but it wasn't directed at her. "You are not resigning. And you have nothing to apologize for. This man is a parasite trying to weaponize your poverty against you."
Marcus Vance reviewed the petition, his red pen bleeding across the legal text. "This is a classic shake-down. Derek Vance doesn't want the child, Ms. Morgan. He wants a settlement. He sees that you are now associated with a high-net-worth individual, and he’s trying to leverage a custody battle to force an out-of-court financial arrangement from Mr. Cole to protect the company's reputation."
"We aren't paying him a single penny," Ethan said, his voice dropping into a dangerous register. "What are our options, Marcus?"
"We counter-file immediately," Marcus explained, leaning back in his chair. "We file for full sole legal and physical custody with supervised visitation contingent upon a psychological evaluation and a retroactive child support judgment for the last seven months of medical expenses. We will force him to prove his income and his stability. If he wants a war, we will give him a corporate-grade blitzkrieg."
Claire looked between the two men. "But the allegations about... about the night we met. If that gets into the local media, it could look strange. The CEO of a massive company showing up at a random applicant’s apartment at midnight?"

Ethan looked directly into Claire’s eyes. "Let them print it. The truth is that a mother asked for help to feed her baby, and a human being answered. There is no shame in that, Claire. Not for you, and not for me. We will stand in that courtroom together."
Despite the terror of the upcoming legal battle, Claire felt a profound sense of security she had never known. For the first time in her life, she wasn't standing in the storm alone. She had a protector who was willing to shield her from the ghosts of her past, no matter the cost.
