Chapter 2: The Mirage of Success

For the next forty-eight hours, I played the part of the heartbroken, oblivious wife to perfection.
When Ethan returned to the room an hour later, pretending he had been caught up with hotel management, I pretended to be asleep. When he smiled at me over breakfast the next morning, kissing my cheek with lips that had just tasted my best friend’s skin, I smiled back, letting him believe his trap was closing around me.
By Monday morning, Ethan was practically vibrating with excitement. He adjusted his tailored suit jacket as we sat in the high-end glass offices of the Downtown Manhattan Banking Corp.
"Just sign right here, Emma sweetheart," Ethan said, his voice dripping with false tenderness as he slid a stack of financial merger documents toward me. "This will unite your family assets with my firm's accounts. It's the first official step of our future together."
Sitting across from us was Mr. Harrison, a senior wealth manager who had served my father for thirty years. Mr. Harrison didn't look at Ethan; he looked only at me, waiting for my signal.
"Our future, Ethan?" I asked softly, spinning a diamond-encrusted pen between my fingers. "Are you sure Monica doesn't want a copy of these papers first? After all, she seemed very interested in the penthouse we're buying."
The room went dead silent.
Ethan’s smile froze. The color slowly drained from his face, leaving his skin a pale, sickly gray. "What... what are you talking about, honey? Who is Monica?"
"Oh, don't play stupid now, Ethan. It completely ruins the sophisticated architect persona you worked so hard to build," I said, leaning back in my leather chair.
I leaned forward and tapped my phone screen. Instantly, the high-end surround sound speakers of the private banking suite blasted the recording from forty-eight hours ago.
'She will never find out... I was looking at the penthouse she’s buying us... Once the signature clears, Emma is completely irrelevant.'
Ethan scrambled across the table, his hands shaking as he tried to grab my phone. "Emma! Delete that! That's a deepfake! It's an AI manipulation! I love you, I swear—"
Before his fingers could touch my device, the double doors of the boardroom swung open. Two tall, burly men in black suits stepped in, blocking Ethan’s path, followed by my father, Richard Carter.
"Sit down, boy," my father said, his voice echoing with the absolute authority of a man who owned half the city's skyline.
Ethan collapsed back into his chair, his chest heaving as he stared at my father in sheer terror. He recognized Richard Carter. Every ambitious social climber in New York knew the face of the billionaire kingmaker.
"You... you're Richard Carter," Ethan whispered, his eyes darting to me in horror. "Emma... your last name... you're a Carter?"
"I am," I said, a cold, victorious smile spreading across my face. "And you are a fraud. My investigators spent the weekend digging into your 'firm.' You’re two million dollars in debt, Ethan. You’ve been embezzlement money from your small clients just to buy Monica those designer bags. And guess who just bought out all of your debt notes this morning?"

I slid a legal foreclosure document across the polished table.
"My father's holding company now owns your debt, your car, your mother's suburban house, and the very clothes you are wearing right now. And we are calling the collection due. Immediately."
