PART 8: My Husband Locked Me In A Freezer So He Could Marry A Fake Pregnant Heiress—But The Next Morning...

CHAPTER 8

THE MAN WHO STOLE HIS OWN DEATH

The countdown had begun.

Outside the vault, Victor Beaumont stood with one hand in the pocket of his tailored overcoat while the hydraulic ram pounded against the reinforced steel door.

Thirty-eight seconds.

Each impact echoed through the underground chamber like cannon fire.

Inside, Arthur Kane didn't even look back.

"Come with me."

Evelyn hesitated only long enough to slip Jonathan Hart's journal into a waterproof leather satchel hanging across her shoulder.

The weight of the book felt insignificant.

The truth inside it did not.

Arthur descended the narrow spiral staircase first.

"This tunnel predates HarborLock."

"How old is it?" Evelyn asked.

"Almost eighty years."

Her flashlight swept across rough stone walls reinforced with thick iron beams.

Unlike the modern concrete above them, these passages looked almost military.

Old electrical conduits lined the ceiling.

Rusted ventilation fans sat motionless.

Every few feet, faded numbers had been painted directly onto the walls.

Sector A.

Sector B.

Sector C.

"What was this place?"

Arthur answered without slowing.

"It was built during the Cold War."

"As a continuity bunker."

Evelyn frowned.

"For the government?"

Arthur glanced back.

"For people with enough money to survive governments."

Above them...

The vault door finally buckled inward.

With one final deafening crash, the locking bolts snapped.

Victor stepped inside without waiting for his security team.

His eyes scanned the room once.

Empty.

The journal was gone.

Arthur was gone.

Evelyn was gone.

Only dust drifted lazily through the air.

Nathan arrived seconds later, breathing heavily.

"They escaped?"

Victor said nothing.

Instead, he walked slowly to the oak table.

His fingers brushed across the dust.

Then stopped.

A faint rectangular outline remained.

Something had rested there for years.

And had been removed only moments ago.

Victor closed his eyes.

"He found it."

One of his men looked confused.

"Sir?"

"Jonathan's journal."

Nathan frowned.

"It can't be that important."

Victor turned.

The disappointment in his eyes was somehow worse than anger.

"You still don't understand."

He walked toward Nathan until they stood face to face.

"Do you know why I allowed the world to believe I was dead?"

Nathan shook his head.

"Because dead men aren't investigated."

Victor continued.

"Do you know why I built fortunes through shell companies instead of public corporations?"

Nathan remained silent.

"Because ownership can be hidden."

Victor leaned closer.

"But evidence..."

His voice became almost a whisper.

"...cannot."

Miles away...

Inside the headquarters of Hart Maritime...

A cleaning supervisor unlocked Jonathan Hart's former executive office for the first time in years.

The room had remained untouched since his death.

His desk.

His books.

His framed photographs.

Everything preserved exactly as Evelyn had requested.

The woman sighed as she dusted the massive mahogany desk.

Then something caught her attention.

A small red light blinking beneath the edge of the bookshelf.

She frowned.

HarborLock's power outage shouldn't have affected this building.

So why...

Was a hidden electronic device suddenly active?

Back underground...

Arthur finally stopped before an enormous circular steel door.

Unlike everything else in the bunker, this entrance looked surprisingly modern.

A biometric scanner glowed beside it.

"No key?" Evelyn asked.

Arthur smiled faintly.

"Jonathan changed that."

He stepped aside.

"It only opens for blood."

Evelyn stared.

"What?"

Arthur pointed toward the scanner.

"Place your hand there."

"Mine?"

"Jonathan anticipated that one day you might need this room."

She slowly pressed her palm against the glass panel.

Nothing happened.

Then...

A tiny needle emerged.

She barely felt the pinprick.

A drop of blood disappeared inside the scanner.

Several seconds passed.

Then a calm computerized voice echoed through the chamber.

DNA MATCH CONFIRMED.

WELCOME, EVELYN HART.

Massive locking mechanisms began turning deep inside the door.

Arthur watched quietly.

"I've waited eighteen years to hear those words."

The vault opened.

Cold white lights flickered on automatically.

Evelyn stepped inside...

And forgot how to breathe.

It wasn't another storage room.

It was a command center.

Dozens of monitors lined the walls.

Satellite communication systems.

Encrypted servers.

Digital maps of shipping routes across the world.

Every screen had remained powered down for years.

Yet everything appeared perfectly maintained.

In the center of the room stood a polished conference table.

Waiting on it...

Was a single sealed envelope.

Across the front, written in Jonathan Hart's unmistakable handwriting, were six words.

FOR MY DAUGHTER—ONLY IF I FAIL.

Evelyn's hands trembled as she broke the seal.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

She unfolded the first page.

Arthur quietly stepped toward the exit.

"You should read it alone."

Before Evelyn could answer...

Every monitor in the room suddenly powered on by itself.

One after another.

Not because someone activated them.

Because someone had remotely connected.

A familiar face appeared across every screen.

Victor Beaumont.

He smiled calmly from somewhere above ground.

"I wondered how long it would take you."

Evelyn froze.

Victor wasn't looking at a camera.

He was looking directly at her.

"I see Arthur found the sanctuary."

Arthur immediately drew his pistol.

"That's impossible."

Victor chuckled.

"You really believe Jonathan built this place without my knowing?"

Arthur's confidence cracked for the first time.

"You've known about this room..."

"...all these years?"

Victor nodded.

"Of course."

"I helped finance its construction."

Silence.

Arthur slowly lowered the weapon.

His face had turned pale.

"No..."

Victor's smile widened.

"Yes."

"Jonathan thought he was building a fortress."

"He never realized..."

"...he built it using my money."

Evelyn looked from the monitors to Arthur.

Then back again.

The room suddenly felt much smaller.

Victor leaned toward the camera.

"There is one question you've never asked, Evelyn."

She said nothing.

Victor answered anyway.

"If I wanted your father dead..."

"...why did I let him live for another eighteen years?"

The question lingered in the silence.

Then every monitor switched simultaneously to an old security recording.

The timestamp read:

September 14.

Eighteen Years Earlier.

The grainy footage showed Jonathan Hart entering this very room.

But he wasn't alone.

Walking beside him...

Was a young Arthur Kane.

And standing behind them...

Smiling as if they were trusted friends...

Was Victor Beaumont.

The three men shook hands.

Like partners.

Like brothers.

Evelyn stared at the screen in disbelief.

Nothing her father had written prepared her for this.

If they had once been allies...

Then the betrayal that destroyed them had begun long before she was old enough to remember.

And somewhere in that forgotten past...

May you like

Lay the truth that could either save her family...

Or destroy everything Jonathan Hart had sacrificed his life to protect.
