PART 5: My Husband Locked Me In A Freezer So He Could Marry A Fake Pregnant Heiress—But The Next Morning...

CHAPTER 5

PHASE TWO

The emergency siren screamed through HarborLock like an air-raid warning.

Red backup lights flashed across the warehouse every three seconds, turning endless aisles of frozen inventory into a maze of moving shadows.

Darkness.

Red light.

Darkness again.

Every heartbeat seemed synchronized with the alarm.

Victor Beaumont never flinched.

Around him, chaos erupted.

Warehouse workers rushed toward emergency exits.

Forklifts stopped where they stood.

The refrigeration compressors shifted to backup generators, filling the building with a deep mechanical roar that vibrated through the concrete floor.

Nathan looked around wildly.

"What happened?"

Victor slipped his satellite phone back into his coat.

"Exactly what was supposed to happen."

Miriam stepped closer.

"You shut down the grid?"

"I shut down much more than that."

Grace's voice burst through Evelyn's hidden earpiece.

"Evelyn, we've lost ninety percent of the camera feeds."

Donovan was already typing furiously.

"They're not just cutting the power."

"They've breached our private server."

Grace's fingers danced across her keyboard.

"Someone's deleting footage."

Donovan's jaw tightened.

"They knew we were recording."

Hidden inside the maintenance tunnel, Evelyn closed her eyes for only a second.

Victor had arrived prepared.

He hadn't simply come to confirm her death.

He had expected resistance.

And now...

He was destroying evidence.

"Evelyn," Donovan said quietly, "we need to move."

"Not yet."

"He'll erase everything."

"He thinks he will."

She reached into the inside pocket of her insulated jacket and removed a small black flash drive.

No larger than a thumb.

Donovan immediately recognized it through her body camera.

"You copied the files."

"Every recording."

"When?"

"Yesterday."

A smile spread across Donovan's face.

"Good."

"Because he's about to burn down an empty library."

Outside Unit Seven, Nathan grabbed Victor's arm.

"You have to help me."

Victor slowly looked down at the hand touching his sleeve.

Nathan immediately let go.

"My wife escaped."

"Our plan—"

Victor interrupted him.

"Our plan?"

Nathan blinked.

"I..."

Victor's eyes were cold enough to rival the freezer behind them.

"You've misunderstood your role from the very beginning."

Nathan frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"It means..."

Victor stepped closer.

"...there was never a future where you owned Hart Maritime."

Silence.

Even Paige stared at her grandfather in disbelief.

Nathan laughed nervously.

"That's ridiculous."

"Lila told me—"

Victor cut him off.

"My daughter tells people whatever they need to hear."

Nathan's smile slowly disappeared.

"What?"

Victor removed a folded document from his coat.

"Read."

Nathan unfolded the papers.

His hands began shaking almost immediately.

It wasn't a marriage agreement.

It wasn't an investment contract.

It was a debt assignment.

Page after page.

Nathan Whitmore had unknowingly signed personal guarantees for dozens of shell companies over the past eighteen months.

Companies that owed hundreds of millions of dollars.

His knees weakened.

"What..."

Victor answered calmly.

"You enjoyed signing documents without reading them."

"You should have started sooner."

Nathan looked toward Miriam.

"Mom?"

She couldn't meet his eyes.

"You knew?"

Her silence was enough.

"You knew!"

Nathan stumbled backward as realization crashed over him.

The luxury vacations.

The expensive gifts.

Lila's promises.

The private meetings.

Every signature.

Every celebration.

Every whispered assurance that he would become the new owner of Hart Maritime...

Had been nothing more than bait.

He had never been the heir.

He had been the scapegoat.

"If Evelyn died," Victor continued, "the investigation would focus on the grieving husband."

"You."

"Every fraudulent signature."

"Every missing transfer."

"Every offshore account."

"They all lead directly to you."

Nathan stared in horror.

"You were going to frame me."

Victor didn't bother denying it.

"You were useful."

Nathan's breathing became ragged.

"You said Lila loved me."

Victor almost smiled.

"My daughter enjoys expensive hobbies."

Nathan whispered,

"I was one of them."

Several corridors away, hidden behind rows of refrigeration equipment, Evelyn listened to every word through Grace's microphone.

She felt no satisfaction.

Only clarity.

Nathan had betrayed her.

But someone else had been moving the pieces long before Nathan believed he was playing the game.

Donovan's voice returned.

"Evelyn..."

"Do you understand what this means?"

"Yes."

"This was never about my marriage."

"It was about my company."

"And now Victor knows you survived."

She nodded slowly.

"So he changes the plan."

Exactly then...

The emergency lights went out.

Complete darkness swallowed HarborLock.

No red lights.

No machinery.

Only silence.

Then...

Footsteps.

Very close.

Inside the maintenance passage.

Evelyn froze.

Someone was walking through the tunnel.

Not outside.

Inside.

A flashlight beam swept across the narrow corridor.

Grace whispered urgently,

"Movement!"

"We've got movement inside your position!"

Donovan stood so abruptly his chair crashed to the floor.

"That's impossible."

"Only three people knew that tunnel existed."

Frank.

The engineering crew.

And...

Frank's face suddenly drained of color.

"Oh no..."

He looked toward Donovan.

"I forgot."

"What?"

"There was one more set of blueprints."

"Who has them?"

Frank swallowed hard.

"The man who designed HarborLock with me."

Donovan's expression changed instantly.

"You told me he died."

"I thought he had."

A shadow appeared at the far end of the tunnel.

Slow.

Deliberate.

A flashlight clicked on.

Its beam settled directly on Evelyn.

A calm male voice echoed through the darkness.

"I've been looking for you, Mrs. Hart."

The stranger lowered the flashlight just enough for his face to become visible.

Evelyn had never seen him before.

But Frank whispered the name with unmistakable fear.

"Arthur Kane."

"The architect."

The man smiled politely.

Then raised a pistol fitted with a suppressor.

"I was hoping we'd meet before Victor found you."

The tunnel fell silent.

There was nowhere to run.

And for the first time that night...

May you like

Evelyn realized she wasn't trapped by her husband anymore.

She was trapped inside a game that had begun years before Nathan Whitmore ever imagined stealing her company.
