PART 4: My Husband Locked Me In A Freezer So He Could Marry A Fake Pregnant Heiress—But The Next Morning...

CHAPTER 4

THE WOMAN WHO WALKED OUT OF HER OWN MURDER

The heavy steel lock clicked.

Then another.

Outside Unit Seven, Victor Beaumont rested one gloved hand against the freezer door while Miriam and Paige stood silently behind him.

No one spoke.

Even the wind seemed to disappear.

Victor looked at Frank Donnelly.

"You built this freezer."

Frank lifted his bruised face.

"I did."

"Then you know exactly what minus four degrees does to the human body."

Frank refused to answer.

Victor smiled faintly.

"I'll take your silence as confirmation."

He nodded once.

"Open it."

Miriam hesitated.

"Shouldn't we wait until morning? If someone sees—"

Victor turned his head slowly.

It wasn't anger that made Miriam immediately stop talking.

It was fear.

Real fear.

The kind that came from serving a man whose reputation existed only in whispered conversations.

"You misunderstand your position," Victor said quietly.

"I wasn't asking."

Miriam swallowed.

She stepped forward, slid the deadbolt aside, and wrapped both hands around the massive freezer handle.

For the first time that night...

She looked uncertain.

Nathan had assured her Evelyn would already be dead.

Victor wanted proof.

Miriam pulled.

The steel door groaned open.

A blast of frozen air exploded into the loading bay.

White vapor rolled across the concrete floor.

Everyone stared inside.

Rows of frozen pallets.

Towering shelves.

Silent machinery.

And...

Nothing.

No body.

No Evelyn.

For three full seconds, nobody moved.

Paige blinked first.

"What..."

She looked again.

"No..."

Miriam stepped into the doorway.

"That's impossible."

She searched behind the nearest racks.

Nothing.

She ran farther inside.

"Evelyn!"

Only her own voice echoed through the freezer.

Victor never entered.

He simply watched.

His expression did not change.

But the temperature around him somehow felt colder than the freezer itself.

Frank laughed.

Softly at first.

Then louder.

"I told you."

"I told every one of you."

"You underestimated her."

Paige spun toward him and slapped him across the face.

"Shut up!"

Frank spat blood onto the concrete.

"You people planned the perfect murder..."

"...and forgot one thing."

"Evelyn Hart built this company."

"She knows every inch of it better than all of you combined."

Victor slowly turned toward Miriam.

"You personally inspected the freezer before Nathan arrived."

"Yes."

"You confirmed there was only one exit."

"Yes."

Victor's eyes narrowed.

"So explain this."

Miriam opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

For the first time in years...

She had no answer.

Several feet away, hidden behind the insulated maintenance wall, Evelyn listened to every word through the narrow ventilation opening.

Her breathing remained calm.

Grace whispered through the earpiece.

"They've discovered you're gone."

"I know."

"Tactical team is ready."

"Not yet."

Donovan interrupted.

"Evelyn."

"Victor is becoming suspicious."

"Good."

"What?"

"The more confused he becomes..."

"...the more mistakes he'll make."

She adjusted the tiny camera pinned beneath her jacket.

Every second of Victor's reaction was being recorded.

His surprise.

His questions.

His commands.

A jury would eventually see all of it.

If they survived long enough.

Across the warehouse...

Nathan's Mercedes screamed into the parking lot.

He hadn't stopped speeding once.

His tires skidded across the rain-soaked pavement.

He jumped out before the engine even died.

"MOM!"

He ran toward Unit Seven.

"Mom!"

Everyone turned.

Nathan froze the moment he saw the freezer door standing open.

Then he looked inside.

Empty.

His face lost all color.

"No..."

His voice cracked.

"No..."

He grabbed Miriam by both shoulders.

"Where is she?"

Miriam shoved him away.

"She isn't here."

"That's impossible!"

"I locked the door myself!"

"You watched me!"

"I know what I watched."

Nathan stumbled backward.

His breathing became ragged.

"I heard her."

"I heard her inside."

"I left her phone."

"I..."

His words dissolved into panic.

Victor watched him quietly.

Then asked the question that made Nathan's blood run cold.

"Did you verify she was dead?"

Nathan looked at him.

"What?"

"When you locked the freezer..."

"...did you actually confirm she had died?"

Nathan stared.

Silence answered for him.

Victor closed his eyes briefly.

Then exhaled.

"So."

"You buried an empty grave."

Nathan shook his head frantically.

"No..."

"No..."

"I heard the door close."

"I locked it."

"She couldn't have escaped."

Victor stepped closer until only inches separated them.

His voice remained perfectly calm.

"Never confuse confidence with competence."

Nathan opened his mouth.

Victor struck him.

The slap echoed across the warehouse.

Nathan crashed against a pallet of frozen cod.

Paige gasped.

Miriam looked away.

No one dared intervene.

Victor adjusted his cufflinks.

"You've just turned an attempted murder into a failed one."

"And somewhere..."

"Evelyn Hart is alive."

He looked toward the maze of warehouse corridors.

"And if she's alive..."

"She's watching."

Hidden behind the wall, Evelyn smiled.

"He's smarter than Nathan."

Donovan answered softly.

"Yes."

"But he's still looking in the wrong direction."

Suddenly, every monitor in Donovan's control room flashed red.

Grace frowned.

"What happened?"

An alarm appeared across every screen.

UNAUTHORIZED REMOTE ACCESS DETECTED.

Someone...

Was hacking HarborLock's surveillance system.

Within seconds, cameras began shutting down one by one.

Loading Dock 3...

Offline.

Hallway C...

Offline.

Parking Lot...

Offline.

Grace's fingers flew across her keyboard.

"I'm losing them."

Donovan's face hardened.

"Victor didn't come alone."

Outside, Victor reached into his coat.

A secure satellite phone.

He spoke only one sentence.

"Activate Phase Two."

The warehouse lights flickered.

Then the entire HarborLock complex went completely dark.

In the sudden blackness, only one sound remained.

The shrill scream of the emergency evacuation siren.

And somewhere inside the endless maze of refrigerated corridors...

Someone whispered Evelyn's name.
