Chapter 9: She Thought She Ruled This Mansion—Until the Door Swung Open and Her Worst Nightmare Stepped Inside

Chapter 9: The Woman in White

Dawn broke over the mountains.

For the first time in hours, the rain had stopped.

Mist drifted through the pine trees surrounding the ruined chapel.

The silence felt unnatural.

Like the world itself was holding its breath.

Ryan Mercer crouched beside the spent shell casing, turning it carefully between his fingers.

"The Black Crown."

He looked at Olivia.

"You've seen this before."

Olivia stared at the emblem without speaking.

Finally, she nodded.

"Only once."

Sebastian wrapped his coat around her shoulders.

"Tell us."

She closed her eyes.

"Fifteen years ago, Gabriel didn't recruit me."

Everyone looked at her.

"He rescued me."

Ryan frowned.

"From whom?"

Olivia's answer came in a whisper.

"The Black Crown."

A chill swept through the chapel.

Gabriel Ashcroft had manipulated lives.

Stolen fortunes.

Built Project Raven into a global intelligence network.

If even he had feared another organization...

How powerful were they?

Emily stepped closer to her mother.

"You never told me any of this."

Olivia gently touched her daughter's cheek.

"I wanted you to have a normal life."

Emily gave a sad smile.

"I don't think we were ever going to get one."

Oliver looked at his sister.

They had known each other for less than an hour.

Yet it already felt impossible to imagine life without her.

Sebastian noticed.

He placed a hand on each of their shoulders.

"No one separates this family again."

His voice was quiet.

But every word carried the weight of a promise.

Ryan's phone suddenly vibrated.

The signal had returned.

He answered immediately.

"Mercer."

His expression changed.

"What?"

He turned away, listening carefully.

When he hung up, the color had drained from his face.

"What happened?" Sebastian asked.

Ryan swallowed.

"Blackwood Estate."

Sebastian's heart sank.

"What about it?"

"It burned down."

Mrs. Harper gasped.

"No..."

"The fire started less than twenty minutes after we escaped."

Ryan looked directly at Sebastian.

"The mansion is gone."

Sebastian stood in stunned silence.

The home where generations of Blackwoods had lived...

Reduced to ashes.

Oliver lowered his head.

"My room..."

Mrs. Harper wrapped an arm around him.

"It's only a house, sweetheart."

But Sebastian knew it was much more than that.

The letters.

The portraits.

His parents' journals.

Centuries of family history.

Gone.

Or so he thought.

Ryan reached into his coat pocket.

"Not everything."

He held up a small brass key.

Sebastian frowned.

"Where did you get that?"

"I found it in the tunnel."

The key was engraved with the Blackwood family crest.

Not the Silver Raven.

Not the Black Crown.

A wolf.

Olivia stared at it.

"I've never seen that before."

Sebastian slowly smiled.

"My grandfather."

"What?"

"He always said..."

Sebastian turned the key over in his hand.

"...that every family should have one secret even its enemies never discover."

Ryan raised an eyebrow.

"You think it opens something?"

Sebastian nodded.

"I think it opens the real Blackwood vault."

Miles away...

A private jet landed on a secluded airstrip.

The mysterious woman in white stepped onto the runway.

Waiting beside a black limousine was Gabriel Ashcroft.

Alive.

The old man removed his hat respectfully.

"You summoned me."

The woman studied him in silence.

"You failed."

Gabriel didn't argue.

"Yes."

She walked slowly around him.

"I spent thirty years building Project Raven."

She stopped.

"You spent fifteen years losing control of it."

Gabriel looked down.

"I underestimated Sebastian."

"No."

Her voice remained calm.

"You underestimated Olivia."

She smiled faintly.

"She was always the stronger one."

Gabriel looked genuinely surprised.

"You knew?"

"I know everything."

The woman opened the limousine door.

Inside sat a little girl holding a stuffed rabbit.

She couldn't have been older than six.

Gabriel frowned.

"Who is she?"

The woman looked at the child with unusual warmth.

"Our insurance policy."

The little girl looked up.

"Are we going to meet my brother?"

Gabriel's eyes widened.

"Brother?"

The woman simply smiled.

"Soon."

Back at the ruined chapel...

The group climbed into Ryan's armored SUV.

"We need somewhere safe," Ryan said.

"There isn't one," Olivia replied.

"They'll keep coming."

"Then we make them come to us," Sebastian answered.

Ryan looked at him.

"You have a plan?"

Sebastian nodded.

"The vault."

Mrs. Harper frowned.

"You don't even know if it's still there."

"My grandfather built it beneath the original Blackwood library."

"The library that just burned down?"

Sebastian smiled slightly.

"The library everyone knew about."

Oliver blinked.

"You mean..."

"There was another one."

Sebastian started the engine.

"My grandfather trusted books more than banks."

"He hid everything beneath them."

As the SUV disappeared down the mountain road, none of them noticed the small drone hovering high above the trees.

Its camera tracked every turn.

Every stop.

Every face.

Hundreds of miles away, inside a hidden command center, the drone's live feed appeared on a wall of screens.

The woman in white watched silently.

A technician approached.

"Ma'am."

"Yes?"

"We've confirmed the biometric scans."

She folded her hands.

"And?"

"The children are authentic."

She nodded.

"As expected."

The technician hesitated.

"There's something else."

He enlarged one of the drone images.

Oliver.

Standing beside Emily.

Side by side.

The computer highlighted their faces.

A red warning appeared across the screen.

GENETIC ANALYSIS COMPLETE

The technician frowned.

"This doesn't make sense."

The woman finally looked interested.

"What is it?"

He zoomed in on the report.

"The DNA markers."

"They're impossible."

She stepped closer.

"Explain."

The technician swallowed.

"Oliver and Emily..."

He looked up, visibly shaken.

"...shouldn't exist."

Silence filled the room.

The woman slowly removed her glasses.

"Run the analysis again."

"We already did."

"And?"

"The result never changes."

She stared at the screen for a long moment.

Then, for the first time in years...

She looked genuinely unsettled.

"Find Dr. Elias Rowan."

The technician nodded.

"Immediately."

As he hurried away, the woman remained motionless.

If the report was correct...

Everything she believed about Project Raven...

Everything Gabriel believed...

Everything Sebastian and Olivia had suffered for...

Had been built on a lie far older than any of them imagined.

Outside, thunder rumbled once again across the distant mountains.

The storm was returning.

And this time...

May you like

It was bringing secrets buried long before Oliver and Emily were ever born.
