Chapter 7 She Thought She Ruled This Mansion—Until the Door Swung Open and Her Worst Nightmare Stepped Inside

Chapter 7: The Price of the Truth

"Olivia!"

Sebastian dropped to his knees, catching her before she struck the cold stone floor.

Rain soaked through his suit as he pressed his hand against the wound in her shoulder.

Blood seeped between his fingers.

"Ryan!"

Detective Mercer was already moving.

"Cover them!"

Gunfire erupted once more.

The detective and two officers who had followed the escape route returned fire from behind the crumbling chapel walls.

Bullets chipped away at ancient stone.

Gabriel Ashcroft never flinched.

Instead, he slowly looked toward the forest.

"That wasn't my shooter."

Sebastian looked up sharply.

"What?"

Gabriel's expression remained strangely calm.

"I gave orders that no one was to fire."

Another shot cracked through the night.

It struck the stone cross above the chapel entrance, showering everyone with fragments.

Ryan pulled Sebastian lower.

"Whoever's out there wants everyone dead."

Gabriel frowned for the first time.

"Interesting..."

Then he spoke into a tiny earpiece hidden beneath his collar.

"Report."

Silence.

No reply.

His eyes narrowed.

"They've stopped answering."

Oliver watched the old man's confidence begin to crack.

"They're not your men anymore," Oliver said quietly.

Gabriel looked at him.

For several long seconds, he said nothing.

Then he whispered,

"No..."

His face slowly hardened.

"They've betrayed me."

Another voice echoed from the darkness.

"Not betrayed."

Everyone turned.

The words came through a loudspeaker hidden somewhere among the trees.

"Replaced."

A slow clap echoed through the forest.

One.

Two.

Three.

A tall figure stepped into the clearing.

He wore a black raincoat.

His face remained hidden beneath the shadow of a wide-brimmed hat.

Around him, dozens of armed men emerged from the woods.

Unlike Gabriel's soldiers, these operatives wore no silver ravens.

Only a single crimson stripe across their sleeves.

Gabriel stared.

"It can't be."

The newcomer removed his gloves with deliberate precision.

"You've grown old, Gabriel."

His voice was smooth.

Cultured.

Dangerously controlled.

"You taught us that organizations survive by eliminating weakness."

He smiled.

"You became the weakness."

Ryan whispered to Sebastian,

"Do you know him?"

Sebastian slowly shook his head.

"No."

Gabriel's grip tightened around his silver cane.

"I built everything."

The stranger nodded politely.

"You did."

"And we're grateful."

He looked around the clearing.

"But every empire reaches the moment when its founder becomes... inconvenient."

Oliver felt a chill run down his spine.

The stranger wasn't here for revenge.

He was here for succession.

He wasn't attacking Project Raven.

He was taking it.

The stranger's gaze settled on Sebastian.

"So."

"The famous Sebastian Blackwood."

"I've heard so much about you."

Sebastian never looked away.

"You tried to murder my family."

The man tilted his head.

"No."

"That was Gabriel's mistake."

"My plans are much simpler."

He pointed toward Olivia, unconscious in Sebastian's arms.

"I only need her."

Ryan tightened his grip on his weapon.

"For what?"

The stranger smiled.

"She's the only person alive who can unlock the Raven Archive."

Gabriel's eyes widened.

"You found it?"

"So did she."

Sebastian frowned.

"What archive?"

No one answered immediately.

Instead, Olivia stirred weakly.

Her eyelids fluttered open.

She looked at Sebastian.

For a moment, the chaos around them disappeared.

She reached up with trembling fingers and touched his face.

"I thought..."

Her voice broke.

"I thought you were dead."

Sebastian's own eyes filled with tears.

"I tried to come home."

"I know."

"You knew?"

Olivia nodded faintly.

"I received one letter."

Sebastian froze.

"One?"

She whispered,

"Only one."

Mrs. Harper gasped.

"Victoria destroyed the others."

Olivia nodded.

"But the first letter reached me."

Sebastian could hardly speak.

"What did it say?"

A weak smile appeared on Olivia's face.

"It said..."

"'No matter how long it takes... I'll find you.'"

Sebastian closed his eyes.

He remembered writing those words from his hospital bed.

The first letter.

The only one that survived.

Olivia squeezed his hand.

"I never stopped believing."

Before either of them could say another word—

The stranger applauded slowly.

"Beautiful."

His voice dripped with sarcasm.

"A touching reunion."

He lifted one hand.

Snipers appeared on the surrounding ridge.

Red laser dots danced across every person in the chapel.

Oliver.

Ryan.

Mrs. Harper.

Sebastian.

Olivia.

Even Gabriel.

"We're finished," Ryan whispered.

Gabriel suddenly laughed.

Everyone looked at him.

The old man laughed harder.

"You arrogant fool."

The stranger's smile faded.

"You think you've won."

Gabriel shook his head.

"You still don't understand Project Raven."

The stranger's eyes narrowed.

"What are you talking about?"

Gabriel looked toward Olivia.

Then toward Sebastian.

Finally...

He looked at Oliver.

A strange sadness entered his eyes.

"The archive..."

"...was never hidden in a vault."

Silence.

"It was divided."

Sebastian frowned.

"Divided?"

Gabriel nodded.

"Into three living keys."

No one moved.

No one breathed.

He pointed first at Olivia.

"She carries the encryption."

Then at Sebastian.

"He carries the authorization."

Finally...

He looked directly at Oliver.

"And the boy..."

Oliver's heart pounded.

"...carries the final biometric access."

Ryan stared in disbelief.

"What does that even mean?"

Gabriel answered quietly.

"When Oliver was born, Sebastian authorized an experimental biometric security protocol."

Sebastian's face drained of color.

He remembered.

Years ago.

A cutting-edge security project developed for Blackwood Industries.

It had seemed harmless.

Just a prototype.

He had agreed to it.

He had completely forgotten.

Until now.

Gabriel continued,

"The archive cannot be opened by one person."

"Not by two."

"It requires all three."

The stranger's expression changed for the first time.

His confidence disappeared.

"So that's why..."

Gabriel smiled.

"Yes."

"You've spent fifteen years hunting the wrong prize."

The stranger slowly lowered his weapon.

His eyes shifted toward Oliver.

Everything changed in that instant.

He no longer cared about Olivia.

Or Sebastian.

Only the boy.

Sebastian saw it immediately.

He pulled Oliver behind him.

"You'll never touch my son."

The stranger smiled again.

"I don't need to."

He snapped his fingers.

A loud engine roared overhead.

Everyone looked up.

A helicopter emerged through the storm clouds.

It wasn't approaching.

It was already above them.

Its searchlight flooded the chapel with blinding white light.

A rope descended.

And hanging from it...

Was someone bound and blindfolded.

As the figure was lowered closer, Olivia gasped despite the pain.

Emily.

Her daughter.

Emily's frightened voice echoed through the clearing.

"Mom!"

Olivia screamed.

"Emily!"

The stranger looked at Sebastian.

"You have one son."

He looked at Olivia.

"You have one daughter."

His smile was utterly devoid of warmth.

"If you want both children to live..."

He spread his arms.

"...you're going to open the Raven Archive for me."

The rain fell harder.

Lightning split the sky.

For the first time since the nightmare began, Sebastian realized the truth.

This had never been about money.

It had never been about Blackwood Industries.

It had never even been about revenge.

It was about something so valuable that people had been willing to destroy two families...

May you like

...and wait fifteen years to claim it.
