Chapter 6 She Thought She Ruled This Mansion—Until the Door Swung Open and Her Worst Nightmare Stepped Inside

Chapter 6: The Tunnel Beneath Blackwood Estate

The stone door closed behind them with a heavy rumble.

Darkness swallowed the narrow passage.

Only the beam from Detective Ryan Mercer's flashlight cut through the dust-filled air.

The tunnel smelled of damp earth and old stone.

"It hasn't been opened in years," Mrs. Harper whispered.

Sebastian walked in front, one hand gripping the leather folder that contained the letters Olivia had never received.

His other hand never left Oliver's shoulder.

"Stay close."

Oliver nodded.

For the first time since his father had returned, he no longer felt alone.

But something still felt wrong.

The silence.

Too perfect.

Almost...

Waiting.

Behind them, distant explosions echoed through the estate.

Gabriel Ashcroft's men had entered the mansion.

Ryan glanced over his shoulder.

"They're inside."

"We keep moving," Sebastian replied.

"There are only two exits."

Mrs. Harper looked surprised.

"I thought there was only one."

Sebastian shook his head.

"My grandfather never trusted blueprints."

He smiled faintly.

"He built a second exit that only the family knew about."

Oliver looked up.

"You knew?"

"I used to play here as a boy."

His expression darkened.

"I never imagined I'd bring my own son through these tunnels."

The words hung heavily in the air.

Suddenly—

Click.

Everyone froze.

Ryan slowly lowered his flashlight.

"What was that?"

Another click.

Metal.

Small.

Precise.

Sebastian's eyes narrowed.

"Don't move."

Ryan swept the flashlight across the floor.

His blood ran cold.

A thin wire stretched across the tunnel.

Barely visible.

Connected to a small black device hidden beneath loose stones.

"A tripwire..."

Ryan whispered.

Sebastian carefully examined it.

"Military grade."

Ryan nodded grimly.

"If we'd taken one more step..."

He didn't finish the sentence.

He didn't have to.

Oliver stared at the device.

"They knew we'd use the tunnel."

Sebastian's jaw tightened.

"No."

He looked around the ancient walls.

"They've known for years."

Ryan carefully disarmed the explosive.

Thirty agonizing seconds later, he exhaled.

"We're clear."

As they continued forward, Sebastian's thoughts raced.

Only three people had ever known about the hidden passage.

His grandfather.

His father.

Himself.

Which meant someone had discovered the family's deepest secrets long before his plane crashed.

The realization chilled him.

Someone had been inside Blackwood Estate for decades.

Miles away...

Inside a remote cabin surrounded by pine trees...

Emily watched her mother hurriedly pack old documents into a weathered backpack.

"Mom."

Olivia didn't answer.

She opened a false compartment beneath the kitchen floor.

Inside rested a metal case.

Its lock required both a key and a fingerprint.

Emily stared.

"You've been hiding that all these years?"

Olivia finally looked at her daughter.

"I hoped you'd never have to know."

She opened the case.

Inside were passports.

Cash.

Several encrypted hard drives.

A satellite phone.

And a thick manila envelope marked:

PROJECT RAVEN

Emily frowned.

"What is Project Raven?"

Olivia closed the lid without answering.

Instead, she picked up the satellite phone.

It had no signal bars.

No service provider.

Only one programmed number.

She hesitated.

Then pressed the call button.

The line rang once.

Twice.

A man's voice answered.

"I wondered how long it would take."

Olivia's face changed.

Not relief.

Shock.

"You..."

The man chuckled softly.

"I've been waiting eleven years."

Back beneath Blackwood Estate...

The tunnel ended at a rusted iron door.

Sebastian pushed it open.

Cold night air rushed inside.

They emerged into an abandoned stone chapel hidden deep within the forest.

The building had long ago been reclaimed by nature.

Vines covered broken stained-glass windows.

The wooden pews were rotting.

Rain leaked through the damaged roof.

Ryan checked the area.

"Clear."

Mrs. Harper sighed with relief.

"We made it."

Then Oliver noticed something.

"Dad..."

Sebastian turned.

"What is it?"

The boy pointed toward the old altar.

There was a single white candle burning.

Fresh.

Someone had lit it recently.

Beside it rested a folded note.

Sebastian unfolded the paper.

Only one sentence was written.

You're exactly where I wanted you.

Ryan spun around.

"Ambush!"

Gunfire erupted from the surrounding trees.

Bullets shattered ancient stained glass.

Everyone dove for cover.

Ryan returned fire.

"Get down!"

Sebastian pulled Oliver behind the stone altar.

Mrs. Harper screamed as fragments of marble exploded around them.

Flashlights swept through the darkness outside.

At least a dozen armed figures surrounded the chapel.

Sebastian realized the horrifying truth.

The tunnel hadn't been their escape route.

It had been a funnel.

Someone had guided them exactly where the enemy wanted them.

Then a familiar voice echoed through the rain.

"You never were good at seeing the whole board, Sebastian."

Gabriel Ashcroft stepped from the shadows.

He carried no weapon.

Only his silver-raven cane.

His men lowered their rifles.

Not because they were surrendering.

Because Gabriel wasn't afraid.

He looked at Oliver with surprising curiosity.

"So..."

"You're the son who survived."

Oliver met his gaze without looking away.

"I have a name."

Gabriel smiled.

"Good."

"Courage."

"You inherited that from your mother."

Sebastian stepped in front of Oliver.

"Leave him out of this."

Gabriel's smile faded.

"I tried."

He slowly removed a sealed envelope from his coat.

"I've carried this for fifteen years."

He tossed it onto the wet stone floor.

It landed at Sebastian's feet.

"Open it."

Ryan whispered,

"Don't."

Sebastian ignored him.

He broke the seal.

Inside was a birth certificate.

His hands began to shake.

Father:
Sebastian Alexander Blackwood

Mother:
Olivia Grace Hart

Child:
Emily Grace Blackwood

Date of Birth:

Fifteen years ago.

Sebastian stared at the document.

His voice cracked.

"Emily..."

Gabriel watched silently.

"You have a daughter."

Oliver looked from the certificate to his father.

Then back again.

His heart pounded.

"I really have a sister..."

Sebastian could barely breathe.

Fifteen birthdays.

Fifteen Christmases.

Fifteen years stolen.

Gone.

Gabriel spoke quietly.

"Olivia kept one child."

"You kept the other."

Sebastian looked up, fury burning in his eyes.

"You separated them."

Gabriel's expression remained unreadable.

"No."

He paused.

"I prevented a war."

Lightning illuminated the chapel.

For one brief second, Sebastian saw something behind Gabriel.

A figure emerging from the trees.

A woman.

Long dark coat.

Rain-soaked hair.

She raised a pistol.

Not at Sebastian.

Not at Oliver.

At Gabriel.

Her voice rang through the storm.

"Step away from my family."

Everyone turned.

Sebastian forgot how to breathe.

The woman lowered her hood.

Her green eyes met his across fifteen years of loss.

"Olivia..."

Neither of them moved.

Neither of them spoke.

Time itself seemed to stop.

Then the gunshot came.

Not from Olivia's pistol.

From somewhere hidden in the forest.

Olivia's body jerked violently.

A crimson stain spread across her shoulder.

She stumbled backward.

Sebastian caught her just before she hit the ground.

For the first time in eleven years...

Husband and wife were together again.

And in the very next second...

May you like

She collapsed unconscious in his arms.
