CHAPTER 6 “Daddy, They're Selling Me Tonight” — The Phone Call That Started a War

CHAPTER 6: THE SHADOW EMPIRE

The storm had finally begun to fade.

But for Marcus Mercer, the darkness was only getting deeper.

Three hours after the battle at Warehouse 47, Lily slept on a couch inside a secure penthouse overlooking downtown Los Angeles.

Wrapped in a blanket.

Holding her stuffed rabbit.

Safe.

For the moment.

Marcus sat nearby.

Watching her.

Not working.

Not making calls.

Not planning revenge.

Just watching.

Because after nearly losing her, he found himself afraid to look away.

Victor Kane stood near the windows.

"She needs rest."

Marcus nodded.

"I know."

"You need rest too."

Marcus laughed quietly.

The sound carried no humor.

"People trying to kill my daughter."

Silence.

"They murdered her parents."

More silence.

"They infiltrated my company."

Victor understood.

Marcus wasn't sleeping anytime soon.

Then a secure phone rang.

Both men looked at it.

The caller ID displayed a single word.

TORRES.

Marcus answered immediately.

"What?"

The federal agent sounded exhausted.

"We found something."

Marcus stood.

"What?"

"A lot."

One hour later.

Federal Headquarters.

Los Angeles.

Marcus entered a classified briefing room.

The atmosphere felt wrong.

Too many agents.

Too many armed guards.

Too much security.

Whatever Torres had discovered...

It wasn't good.

Rebecca Torres stood beside a digital screen.

Dark circles surrounded her eyes.

She looked like someone who hadn't slept in days.

"Close the door."

Marcus obeyed.

The screen illuminated.

Images appeared.

Sophia Laurent.

Her husband Daniel Laurent.

Corporate records.

Financial documents.

Private photographs.

Then dozens of red warning labels.

CLASSIFIED.

SEALED.

RESTRICTED.

Marcus frowned.

"Why am I seeing intelligence files?"

Torres looked uncomfortable.

"Because intelligence agencies have been looking for Lily longer than anyone realized."

The room became silent.

Marcus sat down.

Slowly.

Something told him this conversation was about to get much worse.

The first image appeared.

A private island.

Mediterranean Sea.

Beautiful.

Remote.

Expensive.

Then another image.

A mansion.

Then another.

Armed guards.

Private helicopters.

Encrypted communications.

Marcus recognized the pattern immediately.

Not a corporation.

Not a family.

An organization.

Torres pointed to the screen.

"Blackthorn."

Marcus folded his arms.

"Tell me."

The agent inhaled deeply.

"Thirty-two years ago, twelve powerful families formed an alliance."

New images appeared.

Politicians.

Bankers.

Industrialists.

Military contractors.

Royal advisors.

People whose names never appeared in newspapers.

People who influenced governments from shadows.

"Blackthorn wasn't created to make money."

Marcus frowned.

"Then why?"

Torres answered quietly.

"To control power."

The room fell silent.

Marcus studied the photographs.

Twelve families.

Twelve empires.

One secret organization.

Then he saw a familiar face.

Daniel Laurent.

Lily's biological father.

Marcus leaned forward.

"He was one of them."

Torres nodded.

"Yes."

"And Sophia?"

"Also."

Marcus stared at the screen.

Everything suddenly became much more complicated.

Years earlier.

Daniel Laurent had attempted something dangerous.

Something almost impossible.

He wanted out.

Out of Blackthorn.

Out of the corruption.

Out of the manipulation.

Out of the hidden wars.

Sophia agreed.

Together they gathered evidence.

Records.

Names.

Transactions.

Enough information to expose Blackthorn forever.

Then they disappeared.

One week later, they were reported dead.

Case closed.

Officially.

Unofficially?

Blackthorn spent the next seven years searching for one thing.

The evidence.

And they believed Lily knew where it was.

Marcus rubbed his jaw.

"She was a baby."

Torres nodded.

"Exactly."

"So why would they think she knows anything?"

The agent clicked another file.

A video appeared.

An elderly woman.

Nervous.

Afraid.

Speaking into a camera.

"This statement is being recorded in case something happens to me."

Marcus watched carefully.

The woman continued.

"My name is Eleanor Price."

Torres whispered:

"Daniel Laurent's nanny."

The video continued.

"If Daniel and Sophia are dead, then Blackthorn found them."

The old woman began crying.

"But if Lily survives..."

Marcus leaned forward.

The woman looked directly into the camera.

"...then the key survives."

Marcus froze.

The video ended.

Silence filled the room.

Finally Marcus asked:

"What key?"

Torres looked grim.

"We don't know."

Across the city.

Someone else was watching.

A luxurious office occupied the top floor of an unmarked skyscraper.

Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked Los Angeles.

The city glittered beneath the night sky.

A man stood alone.

Tall.

Gray-haired.

Perfectly dressed.

His face remained hidden in shadow.

A younger woman entered.

"Warehouse 47 failed."

The man nodded.

"I know."

"Marcus Mercer recovered the child."

Again, no reaction.

The woman hesitated.

Then asked:

"What do we do now?"

The man slowly turned.

Cold blue eyes emerged from the darkness.

"Prepare Phase Two."

The woman's expression changed.

Even she seemed uncomfortable.

"That's extreme."

The man smiled.

Not kindly.

"Marcus Mercer was always going to be a problem."

"What about the girl?"

The smile vanished.

"Bring her to me."

"And if Mercer interferes?"

The man looked toward the city.

Toward the lights.

Toward the thousands of people below.

Then he answered.

"Remove him."

Meanwhile.

Back at the penthouse.

Lily woke suddenly.

Her heart raced.

Sweat covered her forehead.

The nightmare had returned.

The same nightmare she had experienced for years.

A fire.

Smoke.

Voices.

Someone carrying her.

A woman crying.

A man shouting.

And a silver necklace.

Always the necklace.

Every dream ended with it.

Lily sat upright.

Breathing hard.

Then she noticed something strange.

The rabbit.

Her stuffed rabbit.

The one she had owned since foster care.

The one she carried everywhere.

The one Marcus had repaired dozens of times.

Something poked through a tear in the fabric.

A tiny metallic object.

Lily frowned.

Curious.

She carefully pulled.

And something slid free.

A key.

A small silver key.

No larger than her thumb.

Lily stared at it.

Confused.

She had never seen it before.

Yet somehow...

It felt familiar.

Very familiar.

An hour later.

Marcus returned home.

Exhausted.

Frustrated.

Worried.

The moment he entered the penthouse, Lily ran toward him.

"Daddy!"

Marcus immediately picked her up.

Relief flooded through him.

"Hey, baby."

"I found something."

Marcus smiled slightly.

"A dinosaur?"

"No."

"A monster?"

"No."

Lily held out her hand.

The silver key rested in her palm.

Marcus looked at it.

Then froze.

Because engraved on the key was a symbol.

A black thorn wrapped around a crown.

Blackthorn.

The room went silent.

Victor stared.

Torres stared.

Marcus stared.

Nobody moved.

Finally Lily asked:

"Is it important?"

Marcus slowly took the key.

His pulse accelerated.

Because suddenly everything made sense.

The video.

The nanny.

The warning.

The hunt.

The murders.

The obsession.

Blackthorn wasn't searching for Lily.

They were searching for what she carried.

And somehow...

For seven years...

The answer had been hidden inside a child's stuffed rabbit.

Three thousand miles away.

Washington D.C.

A secure intelligence facility received an emergency alert.

The alert came from a dormant tracking system.

A system nobody expected to activate.

A system connected to Daniel Laurent.

A system tied to a specific object.

The Silver Key.

For seven years it had remained silent.

Now it was active.

Alarms erupted.

Screens flashed.

Analysts rushed into operations rooms.

And deep inside the facility, a classified file automatically unlocked.

The title appeared on the screen:

PROJECT NIGHTFALL

ACCESS GRANTED

STATUS: REACTIVATED

One analyst looked pale.

"Oh God."

Another stared at the screen.

"What is Project Nightfall?"

The first analyst swallowed.

Then answered:

"The reason Daniel Laurent was killed."

Back in Los Angeles.

Marcus stood by the window.

The silver key in his hand.

The city stretched endlessly before him.

Somewhere out there, Blackthorn was watching.

Waiting.

Planning.

And now they knew something he hadn't understood until this moment.

The key existed.

Which meant the secret existed.

Which meant the war was about to escalate.

Victor approached quietly.

"What do you think the key opens?"

Marcus looked down at it.

A cold feeling settled in his chest.

Then he answered:

"I think..."

A pause.

"I think it opens the reason her parents died."

Thunder rolled across the distant horizon.

And far away, hidden in darkness, powerful people began moving their pieces across the board.

Because after seven years of silence...

The secret of Lily Mercer was finally waking up.

And when it did...

Empires would fall.
