Chapter 5: The silence in the room didn’t last long. Damian let out a short, uneasy laugh, trying to reclaim control.

Chapter 5: The Final Audit

The following afternoon, the corporate offices of Apex Century were completely bare. Federal agents had already cleared out the computers, the servers, and the files, leaving nothing but empty desks and echoing hallways.
Damian sat on the floor of his former executive suite, his back against the glass wall. His tie was gone, his shirt unbuttoned, his eyes hollowed out by twenty-four hours of sleepless terror. The federal arrest warrant had already been issued; the marshals were downstairs in the lobby, giving him five final minutes to surrender peacefully.
The glass doors of the office slid open.
Elena walked in. She was wearing a stunning, tailored charcoal-suit, her posture flawless, her expression completely serene. She didn't look like an enemy; she looked like an architect inspecting a completed project.
Damian looked up at her, a bitter, hollow laugh escaping his lips. "You really took everything, didn't you? My money, my company, my mistress, my reputation. Even Arthur turned on me."
Elena walked over, stopping a few feet away from him. She looked down at him, her eyes holding no malice, no anger—only a profound, chilling indifference.
"I didn't take anything that was yours, Damian," Elena said, her voice smooth and clear. "You built your entire life on a lie. You thought you were a genius because you used my mind to fund your arrogance. I didn't destroy your empire. I just reclaimed my own capital."
"Why did you stay with me for three years if you hated me this much?" Damian asked, his voice cracking as he looked away.
"Because I didn't hate you, Damian," Elena replied softly.
"For the first two years, I actually loved you. I wanted to build something beautiful with you. But then I found the offshore accounts. I found the emails to Veronica. I realized that to you, I wasn't a partner—I was just an expense to be managed until the return on investment was high enough. So, I stopped being a wife, and I became an auditor. And an auditor always balances the books."
Downstairs, the sirens of the federal marshal vehicles began to wail, their red and blue lights reflecting off the empty glass walls of the office.
Elena turned toward the exit, her movements elegant and unhurried.
"Elena, wait!" Damian called out, his voice cracking with a sudden, desperate panic. "What happens to the company now? What happens to everything we built?"
Elena paused at the doorway, looking back at him one last time.

"There is no 'we' anymore, Damian," she said, a brilliant, beautiful smile finally touching her lips. "Tomorrow morning, Apex Century is being rebranded as Voss Innovation. We are allocating seventy percent of your former assets to fund open-source tech education for young women from lower-income backgrounds. Your legacy is going to fund the very people you spent your life looking down on."
She turned away, her heels clicking softly against the marble floor as she walked into the elevator. The doors slid shut with a soft, definitive ding, leaving Damian in the empty room as the heavy boots of the federal marshals echoed down the hallway.
