Chapter 5: THE POOR NURSING STUDENT SAVED THE MAFIA BOSS’S MOTHER FROM POISON—THEN HE DRAGGED HER INTO HIS MANSION, CALLED HER HIS PROTECTION, AND FELL FOR THE GIRL WHO KNEW TOO MUCH

# Chapter 5: The Fire That Never Went Out

The text message was erased less than five seconds after it was sent.

The journal has been found. Phase Two begins tonight.

Somewhere beyond the walls of the Cavalari estate, a phone vibrated once.

A single reply appeared.

No mistakes this time.

---

The mansion awakened to another day under lockdown.

Despite the tension, life inside continued in strange, familiar rhythms.

Breakfast was served precisely at eight.

Doctors examined Victoria every three hours.

Security teams rotated every four.

Yet beneath the appearance of order, suspicion had seeped into every hallway.

Every servant wondered who might betray them.

Every family member watched the others a little more closely.

And Stefano trusted almost no one.

Almost.

---

Mia sat in the medical suite reviewing Victoria's latest blood work.

The toxicology levels were finally dropping.

"You're recovering faster than expected," she said with a smile.

Victoria looked pleased.

"That means I'll soon be able to escape this room."

"I wouldn't recommend running."

Victoria laughed.

"I haven't run in twenty years."

Their conversation felt almost normal.

Almost.

Then Victoria's smile faded.

"Mia."

"Yes?"

"Do you know why Stefano never married?"

Mia looked up, surprised.

"I assumed he was too busy."

"No."

Victoria folded her hands.

"He stopped believing happiness lasted."

"What happened?"

Victoria was quiet for a long moment.

"When he was twenty-three, he was engaged."

Mia blinked.

"I didn't know."

"Very few people do."

"What happened to her?"

Victoria stared toward the ocean beyond the windows.

"She died."

---

The words lingered heavily in the room.

"An accident?" Mia asked softly.

Victoria slowly shook her head.

"No."

"She was murdered."

Mia's heart tightened.

"Because of Stefano?"

"Because someone wanted to hurt him."

Victoria's voice broke.

"He blamed himself."

"He ended the engagement only one week before their wedding because he feared she wasn't safe."

"But it was already too late."

Mia suddenly understood the sadness hidden behind Stefano's calm exterior.

He wasn't emotionally distant because he couldn't love.

He was distant because he believed loving someone placed them in danger.

---

Meanwhile, Stefano and Luca reviewed old financial records inside the study.

Boxes of documents surrounded them.

Invoices.

Bank transfers.

Property deeds.

Years of seemingly meaningless paperwork.

Until Luca found something unusual.

"Look at this."

Stefano leaned closer.

A monthly payment.

Always the same amount.

Always transferred on the same date.

For fifteen years.

Recipient:

St. Gabriel Children's Foundation.

"That foundation closed years ago."

Luca nodded.

"So why did someone continue sending money?"

Stefano examined the signature authorizing every payment.

His expression darkened.

"My father."

---

The foundation had officially ceased operations eighteen years earlier after the devastating hospital fire.

Yet someone had secretly kept funding it.

Or perhaps...

Funding something else using its name.

"We're going there."

Stefano stood immediately.

Luca frowned.

"The building is abandoned."

"Then no one will expect us."

---

Mia insisted on joining them.

"No."

Stefano answered instantly.

"I'm coming."

"It's dangerous."

"I'm part of this."

"You don't know that."

She opened her mother's journal and pointed to Anthony Cavalari's name.

"I think I do."

He sighed.

"You never give up."

"No."

She smiled.

"Neither do you."

For the first time that day...

Stefano smiled back.

---

An hour later, three black SUVs stopped outside the remains of St. Gabriel Medical Center.

The old hospital stood abandoned on a hill overlooking the city.

Broken windows reflected gray skies.

Vines covered cracked brick walls.

Nature had slowly reclaimed what fire had destroyed decades earlier.

Mia stepped from the vehicle.

"This place..."

"My mother worked here."

Stefano looked toward the entrance.

"I nearly died here."

Neither of them realized they had fallen into step beside one another.

---

Inside, dust covered everything.

Collapsed ceilings allowed sunlight to stream through broken beams.

Old hospital signs still clung to the walls.

Emergency Department.

Pediatrics.

Radiology.

Echoes replaced voices.

Luca unfolded the original building blueprint.

"The foundation offices were downstairs."

They descended carefully.

The basement remained surprisingly intact.

One heavy steel door still stood locked.

Stefano examined it.

"No rust."

Luca frowned.

"Someone has been here recently."

Stefano nodded once.

"Open it."

One of his security men cut the old lock.

The metal door creaked inward.

Lights suddenly flickered on.

Everyone froze.

Electricity.

Inside an abandoned hospital.

Someone had restored power.

---

The underground archive looked untouched by time.

Metal filing cabinets lined every wall.

Boxes were carefully labeled.

Medical records.

Donation ledgers.

Construction plans.

Nothing appeared abandoned.

Mia slowly walked between the shelves.

"My mother mentioned keeping records..."

Stefano searched another cabinet.

Then he stopped.

"Luca."

"What?"

"I found something."

Inside a locked drawer rested dozens of cassette tapes.

Each carefully dated.

Each labeled with one name.

Anthony Cavalari.

---

Before anyone could examine them, footsteps echoed above.

Not one person.

Several.

Stefano immediately signaled his men.

"Lights off."

Darkness swallowed the archive.

Voices drifted down the staircase.

"They were here."

"They can't have gone far."

Mia's pulse quickened.

Someone had followed them.

Stefano quietly drew his pistol.

Luca whispered,

"There are at least six."

Stefano nodded.

"Take Mia."

"I'm not leaving you."

Mia whispered.

He looked directly into her eyes.

"That's not a request."

She hated how calm he remained.

As though danger had become routine.

---

The first armed man reached the archive entrance.

Silence.

Then—

A flashbang exploded.

The underground room erupted into blinding white light.

Gunfire shattered the quiet.

Glass burst.

Metal shelves toppled.

Stefano pushed Mia behind a concrete pillar.

"Stay down!"

She covered her ears as bullets struck the walls.

Security officers returned fire.

Within seconds the archive became chaos.

One attacker rushed toward Mia.

Before she could react, Stefano tackled him.

Both men crashed through a table.

The attacker's knife slashed Stefano's shoulder.

Blood stained his shirt instantly.

Mia screamed.

"Stefano!"

Ignoring the wound, he disarmed the attacker with brutal precision.

The man collapsed unconscious.

Another gunman fled upstairs.

"Don't let him escape!"

Luca shouted.

But they were too late.

The remaining attackers disappeared into the ruins of the hospital.

Leaving only silence behind.

---

Mia ran to Stefano.

"Sit down."

"I'm fine."

"You've been stabbed."

"It's a scratch."

She glared at him.

"You're a terrible patient."

Despite the pain...

He laughed.

"Everyone says that."

She cleaned the wound using supplies from an emergency medical kit.

As she worked, Stefano watched her face.

Focused.

Steady.

Gentle.

She never realized he wasn't looking at the injury.

He was watching her.

Luca quietly looked away.

He had served the Cavalari family for nearly thirty years.

He had never seen Stefano allow anyone this close.

---

While Mia finished bandaging the wound, one of the security guards searched the unconscious attacker.

He found only a burner phone.

No identification.

No wallet.

No fingerprints.

Professional.

But there was one unusual item.

A silver pendant.

An old family crest.

Luca stared at it.

"I've seen this before."

"Where?"

Stefano asked.

"In Anthony's office."

Silence.

The same symbol had belonged to Anthony Cavalari.

---

Back at the estate, the cassette tapes were finally examined.

An old tape recorder was brought from storage.

Everyone gathered inside Stefano's study.

Luca inserted the first tape.

Static filled the room.

Then a familiar male voice emerged.

Anthony Cavalari.

Younger.

Calmer.

"If anyone is listening to this..."

"...then I was right."

Victoria closed her eyes.

Her husband's voice filled the room for the first time in fifteen years.

Anthony continued.

"There is corruption inside our family."

"It reaches higher than I imagined."

"I cannot trust the police."

"I cannot trust our allies."

"So I have begun recording everything."

Stefano's jaw tightened.

Anthony paused.

"If something happens to me..."

"...protect Elena Sullivan."

Mia stopped breathing.

Her mother's name.

Anthony continued,

"She is the only witness who knows what was done inside St. Gabriel Hospital."

"She saved my son's life."

"And I promised..."

"...I would save hers."

The recording suddenly ended.

No one spoke.

---

Another tape.

This one was recorded six months later.

Anthony sounded exhausted.

"They know."

"I believe I've been followed."

"If I disappear..."

"...the evidence is hidden where the fire began."

Stefano frowned.

"The fire?"

Luca unfolded the old blueprint again.

"The pediatric wing."

Mia's eyes widened.

"The room where my mother saved you."

Stefano slowly looked toward her.

Everything pointed back to the same place.

The same day.

The same fire.

---

That evening, Victoria asked to speak with Stefano alone.

When the study door closed, she looked at her son with unusual seriousness.

"You love her."

Stefano sighed.

"We have bigger problems."

"Answer me."

Silence.

Finally...

"I can't."

Victoria smiled sadly.

"You didn't say you don't."

"You said you can't."

He looked away.

"Everyone close to me dies."

Victoria walked to him despite her lingering weakness.

She gently touched his face.

"Mia has already survived more than most people ever will."

"Don't decide what she's strong enough to face."

---

Later that night, Mia returned to her room.

She found a small envelope lying on her pillow.

No name.

No stamp.

Inside was a single photograph.

A recent one.

Taken outside the mansion.

She was in it.

Standing beside Stefano.

Across the front, someone had written three words in black ink.

You're next, nurse.

Her blood turned cold.

At that exact moment, the lights throughout the mansion suddenly went out.

Complete darkness.

Emergency alarms began screaming.

Then a single gunshot echoed from somewhere inside the house.

Followed by Victoria's terrified cry.

"Stefano!"

He burst into the hallway at the same instant Mia opened her bedroom door.

Their eyes met across the darkness.

Neither hesitated.

Both ran toward Victoria's room.

They reached the doorway together—

And froze.

The room was empty.

The window stood open to the cold night air.

The security guards assigned to protect Victoria lay unconscious on the floor.

On the bed rested only a single white rose... and a handwritten note.

Stefano picked it up with trembling fingers.

His face became colder than Mia had ever seen.

She whispered,

"What does it say?"

His voice was barely audible.

"They've taken my mother."

"And they want to trade her..."

May you like

He slowly looked at Mia.

"...for you."
