Chapter 5 The Baby Flatlined. 15 Doctors Gave Up. Then a Poor Nurse Said One Word: "Stop."

Chapter 5: The Father in the Shadows

For a long moment after Sophia spoke, Dominic simply stood there.
The hospital room felt impossibly small.
The rain outside had finally stopped, but the silence that followed seemed even heavier.
Sophia sat on the bed, trembling.
Dominic stared at her as though he were looking at a stranger.
"A Rossi."
His voice was barely audible.
Sophia lowered her eyes.
"Yes."
Dominic laughed once.
A short, humorless sound.
Then he turned away.
Claire, who had been standing quietly near the doorway, felt the tension like electricity in the air.
Years of secrets had just exploded into the open.
"Tell me everything," Dominic said.
Sophia wiped her tears.
And finally began.
Fifteen years earlier, Chicago had been a battlefield.
The Moretti family and the Rossi family had been locked in a war that left bodies in alleys, businesses in ruins, and families destroyed.
Every newspaper called it organized crime.
Those who lived through it called it hell.
Sophia had been twenty years old.
Young.
Rebellious.
Desperate to escape the violence surrounding her family.
That was when she met Marco Rossi.
The son of Dominic's greatest enemy.
Neither knew the other's identity at first.
They met at a university fundraiser.
Then again at a coffee shop.
Then again by chance.
Or what felt like chance.
By the time the truth emerged, they were already in love.
"It was stupid," Sophia whispered.
"No," Dominic replied coldly.
"It was."
Sophia shook her head.
"We thought we could change everything."
Claire listened quietly.
The story sounded impossible.
Like something from a tragic novel.
Yet the pain in Sophia's eyes made it real.
"Marco wanted peace."
Dominic didn't respond.
"He hated what both families had become."
Sophia smiled sadly.
"He used to say that children should never inherit wars they didn't start."
A tear rolled down her cheek.
"And then his father found out."
The smile disappeared.
Fear replaced it.
Even after all these years.
"Three people died that week."
Claire felt a chill.
Sophia continued.
"My father ordered me never to see Marco again."
"And you obeyed?" Dominic asked.
"No."
The answer was immediate.
A tiny trace of her old stubbornness appeared.
"We kept meeting."
Dominic closed his eyes.
Already knowing the ending wouldn't be happy.
Then Sophia delivered the final blow.
"I became pregnant."
Silence.
Complete silence.
Claire's heart sank.
Everything suddenly made sense.
The fear.
The secrecy.
The hidden photographs.
The lies.
Sophia continued.
"When both families discovered the pregnancy..."
Her voice broke.
"They wanted the baby dead."
Dominic slowly sat down.
For the first time since Claire met him, he looked shaken.
Not angry.
Not dangerous.
Just wounded.
Sophia continued speaking.
"Our father said the child would unite enemies."
She laughed bitterly.
"Marco's father said the child would weaken the Rossis."
Claire couldn't believe what she was hearing.
"They wanted you to abort?"
Sophia nodded.
"Both sides."
The answer horrified Claire.
Dominic looked away.
Ashamed.
Even though he hadn't been responsible.
Sophia continued.
"We ran."
For one brief moment, her eyes softened.
Remembering.
"We actually thought we could disappear."
"What happened?" Claire asked.
Sophia stared at the floor.
"The car exploded."
Claire froze.
Dominic's expression darkened.
Sophia nodded slowly.
"It happened outside Milwaukee."
The room became silent again.
"Everyone believed Marco died."
"And you?"
Sophia smiled sadly.
"I wanted to die too."
Claire understood now.
The tragedy.
The grief.
The years of silence.
Everything.
Then Sophia looked up.
"But Marco survived."
At the same moment, across Chicago, a black sedan pulled into an abandoned estate hidden beyond the city limits.
Inside the rear seat sat a man in his early forties.
Dark hair.
Strong jaw.
Gray eyes.
The kind of face that carried old scars and older regrets.
He stepped out slowly.
The front door opened.
The elegant woman who had been watching Leonardo greeted him.
"You're late."
The man smiled faintly.
"Traffic."
She rolled her eyes.
"Dominic knows."
The smile vanished immediately.
Of course he knew.
Sooner or later he always would.
The man removed his coat.
"How did Sophia react?"
The woman's expression softened.
"Exactly how you'd expect."
Pain crossed his face.
Fifteen years.
Fifteen years without seeing the woman he loved.
Fifteen years watching from a distance.
Fifteen years believing he was protecting her.
And now everything had fallen apart.
The man walked upstairs.
Toward the room where Leonardo slept.
When he entered, he stopped moving.
For several seconds, he simply stared.
His son.
His son.
The words still felt unreal.
Marco Rossi approached slowly.
Carefully.
As if afraid the moment might disappear.
Leonardo shifted slightly in his sleep.
Tiny fingers curled around the blanket.
Marco felt tears burn behind his eyes.
He had imagined this moment for years.
Yet nothing prepared him for the reality.
The woman appeared in the doorway.
"You shouldn't get attached."
Marco looked down at the child.
Too late.
Back at the hospital, Dominic struggled to absorb everything Sophia had revealed.
One question refused to leave his mind.
"If Marco was alive..."
Sophia already knew what he was going to ask.
"Why didn't he come back?"
She looked away.
"Because I told him not to."
Dominic frowned.
"What?"
Sophia stood and walked toward the window.
"After the explosion, everyone wanted revenge."
Her voice grew quieter.
"The war became worse."
She closed her eyes.
"If Marco returned, they would kill him."
Dominic remembered those years.
The bloodshed.
The funerals.
The endless cycle of retaliation.
Sophia wasn't wrong.
Marco would have died.
Almost certainly.
"So you sent him away."
"Yes."
"And he listened?"
Sophia laughed softly.
"He loved me."
The answer hurt more than anything else.
Because Dominic understood.
A man willing to disappear for fifteen years wasn't acting out of hatred.
He was acting out of love.
Which made everything far more complicated.
Three hours later, Victor burst into the command center.
His face told Dominic everything.
They had found something.
"We traced one of the vehicles."
Dominic stood immediately.
"Where?"
Victor dropped photographs onto the table.
A lakeside property.
Old.
Private.
Surrounded by woodland.
Remote.
Difficult to access.
Perfect for hiding someone.
Claire studied the images.
Then froze.
One photograph showed a greenhouse near the rear of the estate.
Something about it felt familiar.
Very familiar.
She grabbed the image.
Zoomed in.
And suddenly remembered.
"Oh my God."
Everyone looked at her.
"What?"
Claire pointed.
"The flowers."
Victor frowned.
"What about them?"
"They're rare."
Dominic's patience was running thin.
Claire quickly explained.
"I worked a pediatric fundraiser here two years ago."
She pointed again.
"That estate belongs to Elena Rossi."
The room went silent.
Victor's eyes widened.
Dominic's expression hardened.
Elena Rossi.
The sister of the current Rossi boss.
One of the most powerful members of the family.
And one of the smartest.
Claire continued.
"She donates millions to children's hospitals."
Nobody spoke.
The irony was unbearable.
A woman famous for helping children.
Connected to the kidnapping of one.
Dominic reached for his jacket.
"Prepare everyone."
Victor nodded.
Finally.
A location.
A target.
A chance.
That night, dozens of vehicles moved through the darkness.
Police.
Private security.
Moretti loyalists.
Everyone heading toward the lakeside estate.
Dominic sat silently in the lead SUV.
His mind focused on one thing.
Leonardo.
Not revenge.
Not war.
Not the Rossis.
Only Leonardo.
Bring him home.
Nothing else mattered.
The convoy approached the property shortly after midnight.
Lights glowed inside the mansion.
Someone was there.
Victor checked his weapon.
Police prepared tactical teams.
Everything was ready.
Then Dominic's phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
He answered.
A familiar voice spoke.
One he had not heard in fifteen years.
"Hello, Dominic."
Every muscle in his body tightened.
Marco Rossi.
Alive.
Real.
Calling directly.
Dominic's voice became ice.
"Where is my nephew?"
A long silence followed.
Then Marco answered.
"Safe."
Dominic nearly crushed the phone.
"You have thirty seconds."
Marco ignored the threat.
Instead, he said something unexpected.
"I didn't poison him."
Dominic frowned.
"What?"
"I didn't order the kidnapping."
Confusion flashed across his face.
For the first time, something didn't fit.
Marco continued.
"Someone else is using both families."
The words landed heavily.
Dominic exchanged a glance with Victor.
Neither liked where this was going.
"Explain."
Marco's voice darkened.
"Because if you attack that house tonight..."
A pause.
Then:
"You'll walk straight into a trap."
Outside, the convoy continued rolling toward the estate.
Inside the vehicles, dozens of armed men prepared for battle.
And suddenly Dominic realized a terrifying possibility.
Everything they believed might be wrong.
The poisoning.
The kidnapping.
The messages.
The war.
Someone might be manipulating both families from the shadows.
Someone powerful enough to make the Morettis and Rossis destroy each other.
Someone who had remained invisible this entire time.
And if Marco was telling the truth...
May you like
The real enemy had yet to reveal themselves.
To be continued...
