CHAPTER 5 SHE WAS FIRED FOR HELPING AN AUTISTIC GIRL — THEN HER MAFIA BOSS FATHER WALKED IN...

CHAPTER 5: THE SHADOWS AROUND MIA

The silence after Lorenzo's announcement felt unbearable.

Someone had been watching Mia.

Not by accident.

Not from a distance.

Deliberately.

The realization settled over the room like a storm cloud.

Karen looked toward the little girl.

Mia sat perfectly still, her crayons forgotten in her hands.

She was smart enough to know something was wrong.

Children always knew.

Maybe not the details.

But they felt fear.

They felt tension.

They felt the shift in adults' voices.

And Mia was exceptionally perceptive.

Lorenzo immediately crouched beside her.

His voice softened.

"Mia."

She looked up.

"Are we in trouble?"

The question pierced the room.

Lorenzo's jaw tightened.

"No."

A lie.

Karen knew it.

The security team knew it.

Even Mia seemed unconvinced.

But she nodded anyway.

Because she trusted her father.

And because she wanted to believe him.

Lorenzo brushed a strand of hair behind her ear.

"You are safe."

This time it wasn't a lie.

It was a promise.

A promise he would destroy anyone who threatened that safety.

Karen could see it in his eyes.

The room cleared quickly afterward.

Security personnel moved into position.

Phones rang.

Orders were issued.

Vehicles entered and exited the estate.

The Rossi machine had awakened.

And it moved with frightening efficiency.

Karen stood near the window watching everything unfold.

She had never seen this world before.

The world behind wealth.

Behind influence.

Behind power.

The world where danger was real enough to require armed protection.

A quiet voice interrupted her thoughts.

"You should leave."

Karen turned.

Elena stood beside her.

The older woman looked concerned.

"What?"

Elena lowered her voice.

"You've been kind to Mia."

Karen nodded.

"And because of that, you're becoming visible."

A chill ran through her.

Visible.

The word carried meaning.

Dangerous meaning.

Karen looked across the room.

Mia was now sitting beside her father on a sofa.

Reading.

Or pretending to read.

Lorenzo held a phone against his ear while reviewing documents.

Yet somehow he still noticed every movement his daughter made.

Every glance.

Every expression.

Every breath.

The sight touched Karen unexpectedly.

For all the rumors surrounding him...

For all the stories...

The devotion was undeniable.

Elena followed her gaze.

"He worships that child."

Karen smiled slightly.

"I can tell."

Elena's expression darkened.

"That's why his enemies target her."

The words hit hard.

Before Karen could answer, footsteps approached.

One of Lorenzo's security men.

The same one who had delivered the earlier report.

His face was grim.

"Mr. Rossi wants to see you."

Karen's stomach tightened.

Lorenzo's office occupied the west wing of the mansion.

It looked less like an office and more like a command center.

Screens.

Maps.

Security feeds.

Documents.

A giant wall of windows overlooking the estate.

Karen entered cautiously.

The door closed behind her.

For several moments Lorenzo remained silent.

Studying information displayed on a tablet.

Finally he spoke.

"Sit."

Karen obeyed.

She felt strangely nervous.

Not because he intimidated her.

Although he certainly did.

But because she sensed the conversation mattered.

Lorenzo placed the tablet down.

"What are your plans now?"

Karen blinked.

"My plans?"

"You no longer work at Maison Delacour."

The reality returned instantly.

Her job.

Her rent.

Her bills.

Her sister's tuition.

The fragile life she'd built.

Karen forced herself to remain calm.

"I'll find another job."

Lorenzo stared at her.

"That quickly?"

"I don't have a choice."

His expression shifted slightly.

As though he understood more than she expected.

"Tell me about your family."

Karen hesitated.

Why did he want to know?

Yet something in his tone encouraged honesty.

"My mother passed away three years ago."

Lorenzo nodded quietly.

"My father left when I was twelve."

Another nod.

"My younger sister is in college."

"And you support her."

It wasn't a question.

Karen looked surprised.

"How did you know?"

"Because people who carry responsibility recognize it in others."

The answer lingered.

Unexpectedly personal.

For a moment neither spoke.

Then Lorenzo stood and walked toward the windows.

The city stretched beyond the trees.

Power.

Wealth.

Influence.

All visible from where he stood.

Yet somehow he looked tired.

Profoundly tired.

"Do you know what most people see when they look at me?"

Karen chose her words carefully.

"A billionaire."

A faint smile.

"Try again."

"A powerful man."

The smile disappeared.

"A dangerous man."

Silence.

Karen didn't deny it.

Because everyone thought it.

Because part of her thought it too.

Lorenzo nodded.

"Fair."

His honesty surprised her.

Then he turned.

"But power attracts enemies."

The room seemed colder.

"And enemies look for weaknesses."

Karen immediately understood.

"Mia."

"Yes."

One word.

Heavy with meaning.

Lorenzo returned to his desk.

"I need someone she trusts."

Karen's pulse quickened.

"What are you asking?"

His eyes met hers.

"Work for me."

The words landed like thunder.

Karen stared.

Certain she had misunderstood.

"What?"

"You heard me."

"I know nothing about security."

"I don't need security."

He paused.

"I need someone who sees my daughter as a child instead of a liability."

Karen struggled to process what she was hearing.

This couldn't be real.

Yesterday she had been folding designer blouses.

Today one of the most powerful men in New York was offering her a position.

The absurdity almost made her laugh.

Instead she asked:

"Why me?"

Lorenzo's answer came immediately.

"Because when everyone else looked away, you didn't."

The office fell silent.

Karen looked down.

Unsure what to say.

Unsure what to feel.

Then a knock interrupted them.

The door opened.

And everything changed.

A security officer entered.

His face was pale.

Actually pale.

Karen had never seen a trained professional look frightened before.

Lorenzo stood instantly.

"What happened?"

The officer swallowed.

"We have a problem."

The atmosphere transformed.

Every muscle in Lorenzo's body tightened.

"What kind of problem?"

The officer handed him a photograph.

Karen couldn't see it.

But she watched Lorenzo's reaction.

And felt her blood freeze.

His face went completely blank.

Not angry.

Not shocked.

Blank.

Which somehow seemed worse.

"What is it?" Karen asked.

Nobody answered.

Lorenzo stared at the image.

For several endless seconds.

Then he slowly handed it to her.

Karen looked.

And nearly dropped it.

The photograph showed Mia.

Playing in the garden.

Taken recently.

Very recently.

Close enough to see her face clearly.

Close enough to identify what book she was reading.

Close enough to prove someone had been watching her.

Someone close.

Very close.

A second photo lay underneath.

Karen's breath caught.

The second picture showed Mia...

and Karen.

Leaving the boutique together.

Her stomach plunged.

"Oh my God."

The room was silent.

The implication was obvious.

Someone wasn't just watching Mia anymore.

They were watching anyone connected to her.

Including Karen.

Lorenzo's voice emerged like steel.

"When was this found?"

"Ten minutes ago."

"Where?"

The officer hesitated.

Then answered.

"Attached to the front gate."

Karen felt sick.

Whoever had done this wanted them to find it.

Wanted them to be afraid.

Wanted them to know they were being watched.

The message was intentional.

A warning.

Or a threat.

Lorenzo examined the photographs again.

Then his gaze hardened.

Dangerously.

"What else?"

The officer swallowed.

"There was a note."

Karen's heart pounded.

"A note?"

The officer nodded.

Slowly.

Reluctantly.

As though he wished he didn't have to say the words.

Lorenzo held out his hand.

The folded paper was delivered immediately.

He opened it.

Read it once.

Then again.

The room became silent.

Karen watched his face.

Whatever was written there...

it mattered.

Finally she spoke.

"What does it say?"

Lorenzo looked up.

For the first time since she met him, she saw genuine fear.

Not for himself.

For Mia.

Only for Mia.

Then he handed her the note.

Karen read the message.

Five words.

Only five.

But enough to stop her breathing.

SHE LOOKS JUST LIKE HER MOTHER.

The paper slipped slightly in her fingers.

She looked up.

Lorenzo's face had gone pale.

For several seconds nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Then Karen asked the question forming in her mind.

"What happened to Mia's mother?"

The office fell silent.

The security officer immediately looked away.

As if he shouldn't hear the answer.

As if everyone already knew.

Everyone except Karen.

Lorenzo stared out the window.

Toward the distant skyline.

Toward memories he clearly wished would stay buried.

When he finally spoke, his voice was barely above a whisper.

"My wife wasn't supposed to die."

The words chilled the room.

Karen felt her pulse quicken.

Because suddenly she understood.

The photographs.

The note.

The fear.

This wasn't just about Mia.

This was about something older.

Something unfinished.

Something that had been waiting in the shadows for years.

May you like

And whatever had killed Mia's mother...

might have just returned.
