Chapter 4 The Throne Chose the Lost Princess — And Exposed the Queen's Darkest Secret

Chapter 4: The Trial of a Queen

The command echoed across the Grand Hall.

"Arrest her."

For one terrifying second, nobody moved.

The soldiers glanced uncertainly between Queen Isabella and Prince Adrian.

Victoria stood frozen beside Eleanor.

The little girl tightened her grip on her mother's hand.

Fear spread through the crowd.

Not ordinary fear.

The fear that comes when history changes direction.

The fear of choosing the wrong side.

Queen Isabella remained perfectly still upon the royal dais.

Confident.

Cold.

Certain.

For twenty years, people had obeyed her without question.

She expected the same now.

But something was different.

The throne had awakened.

Old loyalties were breaking.

Ancient truths were resurfacing.

And for the first time, doubt had entered the room.

The soldiers continued hesitating.

Isabella's eyes narrowed.

"Did you not hear my order?"

Her voice cracked like a whip.

Several guards finally stepped forward.

Then another voice interrupted.

"Stop."

Prince Adrian.

The future king stepped directly in front of Victoria and Eleanor.

Instantly the hall erupted into whispers.

Nobody could remember the last time someone publicly challenged the Queen.

Especially not in front of the entire court.

Isabella slowly turned toward him.

The atmosphere became suffocating.

Dangerous.

"Move aside, Adrian."

The Prince didn't move.

His gaze remained fixed upon her.

"No."

The single word hit the hall harder than a cannon blast.

Gasps echoed everywhere.

Several nobles looked horrified.

Others looked relieved.

A few looked excited.

Because the royal family had finally declared war on itself.

Queen Isabella descended from the dais.

Each step echoed through the massive chamber.

She stopped only a few feet from Adrian.

For years she had manipulated him.

Controlled information around him.

Guided court politics.

But now she saw something in his eyes she had never seen before.

Defiance.

"You're making a mistake."

Her voice remained calm.

Adrian shook his head.

"No."

A pause.

"That mistake was made sixteen years ago."

The words struck like lightning.

The Queen's expression hardened.

Around them, the entire court listened.

Nobody dared speak.

Nobody dared breathe.

Adrian slowly raised several documents.

Victoria's evidence.

The hall erupted into murmurs.

"What is that?"

"Evidence?"

"Records?"

The Queen's face remained unreadable.

But inside, panic was beginning to spread.

The Prince continued.

"Princess Victoria possesses testimony, financial records, witness accounts, and correspondence linking members of the court to a conspiracy against the royal bloodline."

The room exploded.

Shouts.

Questions.

Disbelief.

Chaos.

The Queen immediately raised her voice.

"Forgery."

The crowd quieted slightly.

She pointed toward Victoria.

"This woman vanished for sixteen years."

Another pause.

"Now she returns with convenient accusations?"

Some nobles nodded.

Others remained uncertain.

The Queen saw hesitation.

She pressed forward.

"Ask yourselves a simple question."

Her voice echoed.

"If she truly possessed evidence, why wait sixteen years?"

The hall became silent again.

It was a reasonable question.

A dangerous question.

Many listeners appeared conflicted.

Adrian knew it.

Victoria knew it.

And Isabella knew it.

The Queen smiled.

For the first time all afternoon.

Victory seemed possible.

Then the massive doors opened.

BOOM.

The sound echoed through the chamber.

Every head turned.

A lone figure entered.

Tall.

Dressed entirely in black.

A scar crossed one side of his face.

Several older nobles immediately recognized him.

And turned pale.

The Shadow.

The kingdom's most feared assassin.

A ghost.

A legend.

A nightmare.

Nobody had seen him publicly in over a decade.

Queen Isabella's smile vanished instantly.

Her blood ran cold.

The assassin slowly walked forward.

Each footstep echoed through the hall.

The silence became absolute.

Finally he stopped beside Adrian.

Then he knelt.

Not before the Queen.

Before Victoria.

Gasps exploded throughout the chamber.

The assassin lowered his head.

"Your Highness."

Victoria looked stunned.

"So it's really you."

The man nodded.

The Queen's hands began trembling.

Very slightly.

Almost imperceptibly.

But enough.

Enough for Adrian to notice.

Enough for Victoria to understand.

The assassin rose.

Then turned toward the crowd.

His voice carried clearly across the hall.

"I was there sixteen years ago."

The room froze.

Every noble leaned forward.

Every guard listened.

Every servant stopped moving.

The assassin continued.

"I was ordered to murder Princess Victoria and her infant daughter."

Shock erupted.

Several people nearly fell from their seats.

Eleanor stared in disbelief.

The Queen's face had become ghostly pale.

"No."

Her voice sounded weak.

Desperate.

The assassin ignored her.

"I received the order directly from agents working for Queen Isabella."

The hall exploded.

Chaos consumed the chamber.

Nobles shouted.

Women gasped.

Men cursed.

The Queen stepped backward.

For the first time, genuine fear appeared on her face.

Because this wasn't rumor.

This wasn't speculation.

This was a witness.

And a very dangerous one.

Adrian raised his hand.

Gradually the room quieted.

The assassin continued.

"I obeyed many terrible commands during my life."

His expression remained emotionless.

"But that night I could not kill an innocent child."

His gaze moved toward Eleanor.

"I spared her."

The little girl stared.

The man who had once been sent to murder her had saved her instead.

The realization felt impossible.

The assassin lowered his head.

"I have carried that secret for sixteen years."

Then he looked directly at Isabella.

"And I am done carrying it."

Silence.

Heavy.

Unforgiving.

Deadly.

The Queen's composure was beginning to crack.

But she wasn't finished fighting.

Not even close.

"You expect us to believe an assassin?"

Isabella's voice rang out sharply.

The crowd hesitated.

It was a fair argument.

The assassin had killed people.

Worked in shadows.

Lied professionally.

His word alone wasn't enough.

The Queen saw uncertainty spreading.

Again.

Hope returned.

Then Adrian spoke.

"We have more."

The Prince raised another document.

The royal seal gleamed beneath the chandeliers.

Several nobles immediately recognized it.

The late King's seal.

Gasps erupted.

Adrian continued.

"This was recovered from Princess Victoria's journal."

The Queen's eyes widened.

Impossible.

The journal.

Margaret.

She should have destroyed it years ago.

The Prince opened the document.

Then read aloud.

"'If anything happens to Victoria or her child, investigate Isabella immediately.'"

The room became completely silent.

Every face turned toward the Queen.

Every eye watched her.

The King's words echoed endlessly.

Investigate Isabella immediately.

The Queen's breathing quickened.

This wasn't happening.

It couldn't be happening.

Yet it was.

And worse was coming.

The Duke of Ashcroft slowly rose from his seat.

For years he had remained neutral.

Careful.

Patient.

Observant.

Now he stepped into the center of the hall.

His voice carried immense authority.

"I have served three monarchs."

The crowd listened.

"I have witnessed wars."

Another pause.

"Assassinations."

Another.

"Coups."

He turned toward Isabella.

"But I have never witnessed evidence as overwhelming as this."

The Queen stared at him.

Betrayal burned in her eyes.

The Duke bowed slightly toward Eleanor.

Then spoke words that shook the kingdom.

"The child possesses the strongest claim to the royal bloodline."

Gasps exploded everywhere.

The Queen looked physically ill.

Several nobles dropped to their knees immediately.

Others remained frozen.

Unable to process what they had heard.

Eleanor herself looked terrified.

She wasn't seeking power.

She wasn't seeking a throne.

She was still just a child.

Yet destiny didn't care what she wanted.

Destiny had already chosen.

Then something extraordinary happened.

The chandeliers flickered.

The air grew warmer.

A strange golden light appeared beneath the marble floor.

At first only a few people noticed.

Then everyone did.

Whispers spread rapidly.

"The throne..."

"Look!"

"The throne!"

At the far end of the hall, the ancient royal throne had begun glowing.

Again.

Brilliant gold illuminated the chamber.

The crowd gasped.

The ancient enchantment had awakened once more.

Eleanor stared.

The glow intensified.

Brighter.

Stronger.

More powerful than before.

The entire throne seemed alive.

Then streams of golden light flowed across the floor.

Directly toward Eleanor.

The room held its collective breath.

The light surrounded her.

Not harming.

Not frightening.

Protecting.

Recognizing.

Accepting.

The Duke fell to one knee.

Then another noble.

Then another.

Within seconds dozens had knelt.

Not to Isabella.

To Eleanor.

The throne had spoken again.

And ancient magic could not be bribed.

Could not be threatened.

Could not lie.

Queen Isabella watched her kingdom slipping away.

In real time.

Right before her eyes.

"No!"

Her scream shattered the silence.

Everyone turned.

The Queen stood trembling.

Years of control collapsing around her.

"You fools!"

Her voice cracked.

"Do you think a child can rule?"

Nobody answered.

"You would destroy everything!"

Still silence.

Then Victoria spoke softly.

"No."

She stepped beside Eleanor.

"You already tried that."

The words struck harder than any sword.

The Queen's face twisted with rage.

Hatred.

Desperation.

And finally...

Defeat.

Because she knew.

Deep down.

It was over.

The throne had chosen.

The witnesses had spoken.

The evidence had surfaced.

The lies could no longer survive.

The Duke turned toward the Royal Guard.

His voice thundered through the hall.

"By authority of the Crown Council, Queen Isabella is hereby suspended pending investigation for treason, conspiracy, attempted murder, and crimes against the royal bloodline."

The room erupted.

Some shouted in disbelief.

Others cheered openly.

Several nobles wept.

The Queen stared at the guards.

Waiting.

Expecting loyalty.

None came.

Not one.

Instead, the captain of the Royal Guard stepped forward.

Slowly.

Reluctantly.

Yet firmly.

He bowed his head.

"Your Majesty..."

A pause.

Then the final words.

"I'm sorry."

The captain removed her royal insignia.

The sound echoed like a death sentence.

The Queen's eyes filled with horror.

For twenty years she had ruled.

For twenty years she had controlled every room she entered.

Now she stood alone.

Completely alone.

The guards surrounded her.

Not aggressively.

Not cruelly.

But decisively.

History had rendered its verdict.

As Isabella was escorted away, she stopped.

Then slowly turned back toward Eleanor.

The hall became silent.

The former Queen stared at the child.

A strange expression crossed her face.

Not hatred.

Not fear.

Something worse.

Knowledge.

A secret.

One final secret.

Her lips curled into a bitter smile.

"You think you've won."

Everyone watched.

No one spoke.

Then Isabella laughed.

A chilling laugh.

Broken.

Dangerous.

And utterly terrifying.

"You still don't know the truth."

The room froze.

Victoria frowned.

Adrian stepped forward.

"What truth?"

The former Queen's smile widened.

And then she delivered the words that stopped every heart in the chamber.

"The man you call your father..."

She looked directly at Eleanor.

"...was not Lord Nathaniel Ashbourne."

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Victoria's face drained of color.

Adrian stared.

The Duke looked shocked.

Even the assassin froze.

Isabella laughed again as guards pulled her away.

"You'll find out soon enough."

Her voice echoed through the hall.

"And when you do..."

A cruel smile appeared.

"...the kingdom will burn."

The doors slammed shut behind her.

And suddenly everyone realized the nightmare wasn't over.

Because the Queen's darkest secret had fallen.

May you like

But an even older mystery had just begun.

To be continued...
