Chapter 4: The silence in the room didn’t last long. Damian let out a short, uneasy laugh, trying to reclaim control.

Chapter 4: The Last Bastion

While Veronica was signing her betrayal, Damian was inside a private cigar lounge in Manhattan, pleading with the last man who could save him—Arthur Sterling, a ruthless old-money billionaire who had funded Damian's first venture fund a decade ago.
"Arthur, please," Damian begged, his voice hoarse, his hands trembling as he poured a glass of scotch. "Elena is running a rogue operation. She’s frozen my liquidity, but the core assets of Apex Century are still sound. If you can clear a fifty-million-dollar line of credit through your offshore banking network just for forty-eight hours, I can file a counter-injunction and regain control of the board."
Arthur Sterling sat in a leather wingback chair, blowing a thick cloud of cigar smoke into the air. He didn't look at Damian. He looked at his watch.
"Damian," Arthur said slowly, his voice heavy with a grim finality. "Do you know what the definition of a bad asset is?"
Damian blinked, confused. "Arthur, I'm not a bad asset—"
"A bad asset," Arthur interrupted, finally looking at him with eyes as cold as stone, "is a man who doesn't realize he’s already dead. Ten minutes before you walked into this lounge, I received a phone call from Christopher Vance, the chief counsel for Voss Global."
Damian’s heart stopped. "What did he say?"
"He told me that if Sterling Holdings buys a single share of Apex Century, or extends you a single penny of credit, Voss Global will call in the commercial mortgages on every single one of my real estate developments in New York," Arthur explained, standing up and extinguishing his cigar in a crystal ashtray.
"Your wife doesn't just own tech patents, Damian. She owns the debt. She bought the secondary bonds for my entire corporate portfolio three months ago. She has the legal right to foreclose on my entire family legacy if I so much as shake your hand."
Arthur walked over to the door, pausing to look back at the young man he had once mentored. "You were a brilliant hunter, Damian. But you made the fatal mistake of hunting a woman who owned the forest. Goodbye."
The door clicked shut, leaving Damian completely alone in the smoky room.
Suddenly, his phone buzzed. The signal was back, but the message that appeared on his screen was a video file sent from an unlisted number.
Damian clicked it with a trembling thumb. It was a live feed of the federal courthouse downtown. Step by step, Veronica Vance was walking down the stone stairs, surrounded by federal agents, holding a box of financial ledgers. A news ticker at the bottom of the screen read: "BREAKING: Key Witness Cooperates with SEC in Apex Century Fraud Investigation."
