CHAPTER 4 The Mafia Boss's Secret Triplets

CHAPTER 4: THE TRUTH ABOUT THE WEDDING

The sniper was gone before security reached the perimeter.

Again.

Just like the stranger near the lake.

Just like Daniel Harper.

Just like every ghost Rossi seemed to send.

Always close enough to remind them he existed.

Never close enough to catch.

By sunrise, the Blackwood estate was under complete lockdown.

No one entered.

No one left.

Additional guards arrived.

New security systems were installed.

Every vehicle was searched.

Every employee was questioned again.

The atmosphere felt suffocating.

Vivien stood by her bedroom window watching armed men patrol the grounds below.

The estate looked less like a home than a military base.

A soft knock sounded.

Eleanor entered carrying breakfast.

The older woman paused when she saw Vivien staring outside.

"You haven't slept."

It wasn't a question.

Vivien smiled weakly.

"No."

Eleanor placed the tray on a table.

"Neither has Adrian."

That didn't surprise her.

Nothing about the past few weeks would allow normal sleep.

The older woman hesitated.

Then she asked carefully,

"May I give you some advice?"

Vivien nodded.

Eleanor sat beside her.

"Fear grows when it lives entirely inside your head."

Vivien looked away.

"And what am I supposed to do about that?"

"Talk."

The answer was simple.

Almost frustratingly simple.

Eleanor squeezed her hand.

"Especially to the people who matter."

The older woman left soon afterward.

But her words lingered.

Especially to the people who matter.

Vivien hated how quickly her mind supplied Adrian's face.

Later that afternoon, she found him in his office.

Stacks of reports covered his desk.

Security footage played silently on several monitors.

Adrian looked exhausted.

The cut on his forehead had mostly healed.

But the shadows beneath his eyes had deepened.

He glanced up as she entered.

For the first time since she'd arrived at the estate, a genuine smile touched his face.

Small.

Brief.

But real.

"Everything okay?"

The question felt strangely intimate.

Vivien leaned against the doorway.

"I think that's my line."

His smile faded.

"Fair."

She stepped inside.

Neither spoke for a moment.

Then Vivien took a breath.

"We need to talk."

Adrian immediately looked wary.

That almost made her laugh.

The feared Adrian Blackwood looked more nervous facing her than he did facing gunmen.

"About?"

"The wedding."

His expression changed instantly.

The room became quieter.

He leaned back in his chair.

"What about it?"

"Everything."

Vivien crossed her arms.

"Because none of it makes sense."

Adrian remained silent.

"People don't accidentally meet mafia bosses."

Still silence.

"You knew who I was."

A pause.

Then:

"Yes."

The answer hit harder than she expected.

Vivien stared.

"You knew me."

"I knew your name."

"Before the wedding."

"Yes."

Anger flared immediately.

"You approached me intentionally?"

Adrian stood.

"Not for the reasons you're thinking."

"Then explain them."

For several seconds he simply looked at her.

Then he walked toward a cabinet.

Opened it.

Removed a folder.

Vivien's stomach tightened.

He handed it to her.

Slowly.

Carefully.

As though the contents might explode.

She opened it.

The first photograph made her freeze.

Her mother.

The second photograph showed hospital records.

The third contained medical bills.

The fourth contained newspaper clippings.

Vivien looked up.

"What is this?"

Adrian's voice was quiet.

"The reason I noticed you."

Confusion swirled inside her.

She looked back down.

Then she saw a name.

Richard Blackwood.

Adrian's father.

Her heart stopped.

"What?"

She flipped through the pages faster.

Medical reports.

Legal documents.

Settlement offers.

Investigation files.

Then understanding struck.

Slowly.

Horribly.

Her mother hadn't simply gotten sick.

Years earlier, she had participated in a clinical trial funded through one of Richard Blackwood's companies.

The trial had gone wrong.

Several people became ill.

Multiple lawsuits followed.

Most were quietly settled.

Including her mother's.

Vivien stared at the documents.

Her hands trembled.

"No."

Adrian nodded slowly.

"My father buried the entire situation."

The room felt suddenly smaller.

Harder to breathe in.

"You knew this?"

"Yes."

"How long?"

"A few years."

Vivien looked at him in disbelief.

"And you never contacted me?"

His jaw tightened.

"I wanted to."

"That's not an answer."

"No."

His eyes lowered briefly.

Then he admitted:

"I didn't know how."

The honesty disarmed her.

But not enough.

"You approached me at the wedding because you felt guilty."

Adrian didn't answer.

That was answer enough.

The realization crashed through her.

Their meeting hadn't been random.

Their conversation.

Their connection.

Their night together.

All of it traced back to a tragedy neither of them created.

Vivien sat down heavily.

She didn't know what to feel.

Anger.

Relief.

Confusion.

Betrayal.

Maybe all of them.

"I wasn't a stranger."

Her voice sounded distant.

"No."

Adrian sat across from her.

"You weren't."

The silence stretched.

Finally Vivien asked the question she feared most.

"Did you spend that night with me because of guilt?"

Adrian's head snapped up immediately.

"No."

The answer came too quickly to be rehearsed.

Too quickly to be false.

His eyes locked onto hers.

"Never."

Something raw flashed across his face.

Something honest.

"That night was the only real thing I'd had in years."

The room fell silent.

Vivien couldn't look away.

Neither could he.

For one dangerous moment, the distance between them felt fragile.

Very fragile.

Then Marcus burst through the door.

Again.

At this point Vivien suspected the man possessed supernatural timing.

His face was pale.

Urgent.

"Sir."

Adrian immediately stood.

"What happened?"

Marcus swallowed.

"We found Daniel."

The warehouse sat on the edge of the city.

Abandoned.

Silent.

Surrounded by police and Blackwood security.

Vivien remained inside an armored SUV while Adrian and his men entered.

Every minute felt like an hour.

Finally Marcus returned.

His expression was grim.

The moment Vivien saw his face, she knew.

Something was wrong.

Very wrong.

"Marcus?"

The bodyguard looked away briefly.

Then back.

"He's dead."

Daniel Harper was dead.

Executed.

The news spread quickly.

Vivien watched Adrian absorb the information.

No reaction.

No emotion.

No visible response.

That frightened her more than rage would have.

Because she was beginning to understand him.

And she knew the colder he became, the more dangerous the situation truly was.

"What happened?" Adrian asked.

Marcus handed him photographs.

"A message."

Vivien's stomach dropped.

Another message.

Always messages.

Always games.

Adrian looked at the photographs.

His face hardened.

Then he passed them to Marcus.

Vivien never saw the images.

But she saw something else.

Fear.

Not in Marcus.

Not in the guards.

In Adrian.

For the first time.

Real fear.

That night the truth emerged.

The photographs revealed something hidden inside Daniel's jacket.

A tattoo.

A symbol.

One Adrian recognized immediately.

Rossi wasn't acting alone.

He never had been.

A larger organization stood behind him.

Older.

Richer.

More powerful.

An alliance of criminal families thought to have disappeared years ago.

Families that had once feared Richard Blackwood.

Families that now wanted revenge.

Vivien listened as Adrian explained everything.

The safe room felt heavy with tension.

Maps covered the walls.

Names filled whiteboards.

Information arrived nonstop.

The situation was escalating rapidly.

"How many families?" Vivien asked.

Marcus answered.

"Five."

Her heart sank.

Five criminal empires.

Five armies.

Five fortunes.

All connected.

All united.

Against Adrian.

Against her.

Against the babies.

The odds felt impossible.

Even Adrian looked troubled.

Then another message arrived.

A secure phone buzzed.

Everyone froze.

Marcus answered.

Listened.

Then slowly lowered the phone.

"What?"

Adrian's voice carried warning.

Marcus swallowed.

"They found the doctor."

The room went silent.

Vivien's blood turned cold.

"What doctor?"

Nobody answered.

Then she understood.

The ultrasound technician.

The clinic.

The woman who had discovered the triplets.

"Oh God."

Marcus nodded.

The technician had disappeared.

No trace.

No witnesses.

Gone.

A warning.

Or leverage.

Maybe both.

Vivien suddenly felt sick.

Rossi wasn't targeting buildings anymore.

He was targeting people.

Anyone connected to her.

Anyone connected to the babies.

The circle was tightening.

Near midnight, unable to sleep again, Vivien wandered into the estate gardens.

The air felt cool.

Quiet.

Peaceful.

At least on the surface.

She found Adrian near the lake.

The same bench.

The same water.

The same darkness.

Neither seemed surprised to see the other.

"I figured you'd be here."

Adrian smiled faintly.

"I figured you'd say that."

Vivien sat beside him.

Closer this time.

Close enough that their shoulders almost touched.

For several minutes neither spoke.

Then Adrian broke the silence.

"I'm sorry."

Vivien turned.

"For what?"

His gaze remained fixed on the lake.

"For all of it."

The words were simple.

But sincere.

She knew that now.

"I didn't mean for any of this to happen."

Something inside her softened.

Not completely.

But enough.

"You couldn't control everything."

"No."

A bitter smile touched his lips.

"I keep trying anyway."

That actually made her laugh.

Adrian looked at her.

The sound seemed to affect him.

The same way it had affected her.

Because moments like this felt increasingly rare.

Normal.

Human.

Real.

Vivien studied him quietly.

Then she asked:

"If none of this had happened..."

His eyes met hers.

"If there were no enemies."

A pause.

"No danger."

Another pause.

"No pregnancy."

The silence deepened.

Vivien's heart pounded.

"Would you have come back?"

For the first time since she'd met him, Adrian seemed completely unprepared for a question.

He looked away.

Then back.

Then finally answered.

"Every day."

The confession stole her breath.

"I thought about coming back every single day."

Neither moved.

The world seemed to narrow around them.

Just the lake.

The stars.

And the truth neither could avoid anymore.

Vivien slowly reached for his hand.

This time neither pulled away.

Their fingers intertwined naturally.

Easily.

As if they belonged there.

Adrian looked down at their hands.

Then at her.

Something warm flickered between them.

Hope.

The possibility of something more.

Then suddenly every light on the estate went dark.

The entire property plunged into blackness.

Alarms instantly erupted.

Security radios exploded with shouting.

Marcus's voice thundered through the communications system.

"Power outage!"

Another voice screamed:

"Perimeter breach!"

Vivien's heart stopped.

Adrian was already standing.

Every protective instinct returning instantly.

Then a third voice shouted words that froze everyone.

"She's gone!"

Silence.

One horrible second of silence.

Then:

"The doctor is gone!"

Not the technician.

Not this time.

The obstetrician Adrian had hired for Vivien's pregnancy.

Kidnapped.

Taken from inside a secured medical facility less than an hour earlier.

And attached to the security footage was a single message from Rossi.

A message directed personally at Adrian.

YOU KEEP SAVING THE MOTHER.

LET'S SEE HOW WELL YOU SAVE THE CHILDREN.

May you like

The war had entered a terrifying new phase.

And for the first time, Vivien saw genuine panic in Adrian Blackwood's eyes.
