Chapter 4 She Thought She Ruled This Mansion—Until the Door Swung Open and Her Worst Nightmare Stepped Inside

Chapter 4: The Cabin in the Pines

The knock came again.

Three slow taps.

Then silence.

Olivia Blackwood stood frozen in the center of the cabin.

Every instinct screamed the same warning.

Run.

Across the room, the teenage girl looked up from the fireplace.

"Mom?"

Emily's voice was calm, but her eyes were filled with concern.

She had never seen her mother turn so pale.

Olivia quickly folded the photograph she had been holding and slipped it into a drawer.

"Go downstairs."

Emily frowned.

"What happened?"

"Now."

The firmness in Olivia's voice left no room for argument.

Without another word, Emily disappeared through a hidden door concealed behind an old bookcase.

Only after the panel clicked shut did Olivia walk toward the front entrance.

The knocking stopped.

She looked through the peephole.

No one.

Only darkness.

Rain poured over the empty porch.

The forest beyond swayed violently beneath the storm.

Slowly, she unlocked the door.

The cold wind rushed inside.

There was no visitor.

Only a small wooden box resting on the welcome mat.

Olivia's hands trembled.

She recognized it instantly.

The black cedar.

The silver raven burned into the lid.

Her worst nightmare had finally found her.

She carried the box inside and opened it carefully.

There was no bomb.

No weapon.

Only three objects.

A newspaper.

A photograph.

And a note.

The newspaper was dated four years earlier.

The headline covered the entire front page.

BLACKWOOD BILLIONAIRE PRESUMED DEAD AFTER PLANE DISAPPEARS

Olivia stared at the words.

Her breathing became uneven.

"No..."

She unfolded the photograph.

It showed Sebastian standing beside Oliver inside Blackwood Estate.

Taken only hours earlier.

He was alive.

He had come home.

Tears streamed down her face.

For years she had believed he was dead.

Someone had made certain she believed it.

Then she opened the note.

Only one sentence was written.

He's looking for you. Don't let him find you.

A sudden voice came from behind.

"Who is Sebastian Blackwood?"

Olivia spun around.

Emily stood in the doorway.

She had returned without making a sound.

The newspaper slipped from Olivia's hands.

Emily picked it up.

Her eyes widened as she read the headline.

Then she looked at the photograph.

Finally, at her mother.

"You knew him."

Olivia couldn't speak.

Emily whispered the question she had carried her entire life.

"Is he my father?"

Silence answered.

That was enough.

Emily staggered backward.

"No..."

Olivia rushed toward her.

"I can explain."

"You told me he died before I was born."

"I was trying to protect you."

"By lying to me?"

Emily's voice cracked.

"My entire life has been a lie!"

She turned away, tears filling her eyes.

"I don't even know who I am."

Across the country...

Inside Blackwood Estate...

Sebastian stood in his private study.

The recent photograph of Olivia lay beneath a desk lamp.

He couldn't stop looking at it.

Every line on her face told a story.

Years of fear.

Years of hiding.

Years stolen from them.

Detective Ryan Mercer entered carrying another folder.

"We identified the cabin."

Sebastian looked up instantly.

"Where?"

"The western edge of Flathead National Forest."

"Montana?"

Ryan nodded.

"But there's a problem."

Sebastian had expected one.

"The photograph wasn't taken there."

"What?"

"The GPS data embedded in the image was altered."

Sebastian frowned.

"So it's fake?"

"No."

Ryan spread several satellite images across the desk.

"The cabin exists."

He pointed to one image.

"But this photograph was taken over two thousand miles away."

Oliver stared in confusion.

"How is that possible?"

Ryan slid one final document across the table.

"It isn't."

Sebastian read the report.

His expression hardened.

"The image was transmitted through a secure military satellite."

Oliver blinked.

"Military?"

Ryan nodded.

"Whoever sent that photograph has access to technology most governments don't even possess."

Mrs. Harper whispered,

"So someone wanted you to find her..."

Ryan finished the thought.

"...while making sure you searched in the wrong place."

Sebastian slowly closed the folder.

"They're playing with us."

Just then, the lawyer hurried into the study.

"Sir."

Sebastian looked up.

"What is it?"

"We finished reviewing Victoria's financial records."

"And?"

The lawyer hesitated.

"There wasn't four hundred sixty million dollars missing."

Sebastian's eyes narrowed.

"How much?"

The lawyer swallowed.

"One point eight billion."

The room fell silent.

Oliver's mouth fell open.

Ryan stared at the report.

"That's impossible."

"So we thought."

The lawyer laid dozens of transaction records across the desk.

"The money wasn't stolen."

Sebastian frowned.

"It was funding something."

"What?"

The lawyer looked directly into his eyes.

"A private organization that officially doesn't exist."

Before anyone could ask another question, every computer screen inside the mansion suddenly flickered.

The lights dimmed.

Then all the monitors switched on at once.

One face appeared on every screen.

A man.

Silver hair.

Dark suit.

Cold blue eyes.

He smiled as though greeting old friends.

"Good evening, Sebastian."

No one in the room recognized him.

Except Victoria.

Locked inside the estate's security office under police guard, she saw the same broadcast.

The moment she saw his face, she collapsed to her knees.

Her lips trembled.

"No..."

She whispered.

"He's alive."

Back in the study, the stranger looked directly into the camera.

"If you're watching this..."

He smiled.

"...then you've already lost."

The screens went black.

Seconds later, every security alarm in Blackwood Estate erupted at once.

Outside the mansion gates, more than a dozen black SUVs rolled silently through the rain.

Their headlights cut through the darkness like knives.

Sebastian walked toward the front window.

His jaw tightened.

"They're here."

Oliver stood beside him.

"Who are they?"

Sebastian didn't answer.

Because for the first time since returning home...

May you like

He didn't know.
