CHAPTER 4 She Didn't Run Away — They Made Her Disappear

# CHAPTER 4 — The Truth Emma Forgot

The warehouse fell silent.

Not because the danger had passed.

Because everyone present understood that something far bigger than gunfire had just entered the room.

Victoria Blackwood stood beneath the shattered windows as cold harbor fog drifted around her.

Behind her, armed men spread through the warehouse.

Disciplined.

Professional.

Unnervingly calm.

Daniel knelt beside his wounded father, clutching the Project 731 folder.

His pulse thundered in his ears.

Victoria's gaze settled on the file.

Then on Richard Reed.

A faint smile appeared.

"Still protecting secrets, Richard?"

Richard pressed a hand against his bleeding shoulder.

"Stay away from my son."

Victoria laughed softly.

"What a strange thing to say after fifteen years."

Daniel looked between them.

"You know each other."

Victoria tilted her head.

"Of course we do."

Her eyes returned to Richard.

"We built an empire together."

The words hit Daniel like another bullet.

Richard lowered his gaze.

Not denying it.

Not arguing.

Simply accepting it.

Victoria noticed Daniel's reaction.

"Ah."

She smiled.

"He never told you."

Daniel felt anger rising.

"Tell me what?"

Victoria took a slow step forward.

"The Reed family was one of Blackwood's founding partners."

Daniel stared.

"No."

"Yes."

She spoke without hesitation.

"Your grandfather funded the earliest research programs."

Richard's face tightened.

"Stop."

Victoria ignored him.

"Your father inherited the position."

Another step.

"And Olivia discovered what we were doing."

The warehouse seemed smaller with every word.

Daniel's grip tightened around the folder.

"What exactly were you doing?"

For the first time, Victoria's smile faded.

"We were changing lives."

Richard barked a bitter laugh.

"That's not what you were doing."

Victoria glanced at him.

"No?"

Her voice hardened.

"People with severe trauma could finally sleep."

She pointed toward the file.

"Patients with devastating memories could heal."

Another step.

"Victims could forget horrors."

Daniel frowned.

"And the children?"

For the first time, silence appeared.

Only for a moment.

Then Victoria answered.

"Every breakthrough requires testing."

Daniel felt sick.

The calmness in her voice frightened him more than any weapon.

She didn't see victims.

She saw data.

Results.

Experiments.

Nothing more.

Then her expression changed.

She looked almost amused.

"Where is Emma?"

Daniel's heartbeat accelerated.

Victoria noticed immediately.

"There it is."

Her smile returned.

"The protective instinct."

Richard suddenly stood despite the pain.

"Leave her out of this."

Victoria's eyes narrowed.

"I would love to."

The temperature in the room seemed to drop.

"But Emma belongs to us."

Daniel froze.

Belongs?

The word felt wrong.

Dangerous.

Inhuman.

"What does that mean?"

Victoria sighed.

As if explaining something obvious.

"It means Emma is our most important subject."

Daniel stared.

Subject.

Not person.

Subject.

The same language used throughout the file.

The same language used for experiments.

Richard's face became pale.

"Victoria—"

"Don't."

She looked at him sharply.

"You lost the right to lecture me years ago."

Daniel suddenly realized something.

His father wasn't surprised.

Terrified.

But not surprised.

He already knew.

"What is Emma?" Daniel asked.

Victoria's expression softened unexpectedly.

Almost admiring.

"A miracle."

The answer sent chills through him.

Then she continued.

"The only successful survivor of Project 731."

The world seemed to stop.

Daniel remembered Emma's nightmares.

The missing memories.

The fear.

The scars hidden beneath her sleeves.

Suddenly every piece began fitting together.

Too perfectly.

Too horribly.

Victoria continued speaking.

"As a child, Emma suffered catastrophic trauma."

Daniel listened.

Unable to look away.

"Our researchers developed a revolutionary procedure."

Her eyes gleamed.

"The complete reconstruction of memory pathways."

Richard closed his eyes.

As though he had heard this nightmare before.

Victoria continued.

"We erased pain."

Daniel stared.

"No."

"Yes."

"We erased identity."

Daniel felt cold.

"We erased fear."

His stomach twisted.

"And eventually..."

Victoria smiled.

"We erased everything."

Silence followed.

Heavy.

Crushing.

Daniel finally understood.

Emma didn't forget naturally.

Someone had taken her memories.

Piece by piece.

Until almost nothing remained.

Then another realization struck him.

A terrifying one.

"Olivia saved her."

Victoria's smile disappeared.

Instantly.

Like a mask being removed.

"Yes."

The single word contained fifteen years of hatred.

Richard saw it too.

"Victoria—"

"She stole her."

The calm voice vanished.

For the first time, emotion appeared.

Raw.

Angry.

Dangerous.

Victoria stepped forward.

"Fifteen years."

Another step.

"Fifteen years of sabotage."

Another.

"Fifteen years of running."

Daniel suddenly understood.

This wasn't merely about Emma.

Or research.

Or corporate secrets.

This was personal.

Very personal.

Victoria hated Olivia.

Deeply.

Obsessively.

The way people hate someone who destroyed their life's work.

Then Victoria spoke the words that changed everything.

"Olivia was like a daughter to me."

Silence exploded across the warehouse.

Daniel blinked.

"What?"

Victoria looked away briefly.

For the first time, sadness crossed her face.

Years ago.

Before the hatred.

Before the betrayal.

Before everything fell apart.

"There was a time when I loved her."

Richard looked shocked.

Apparently this was news even to him.

Victoria laughed softly.

"Not the way you're thinking."

She shook her head.

"She was brilliant."

Her voice became distant.

Remembering.

"Fearless."

Another pause.

"Extraordinary."

Daniel had never heard anyone describe Olivia like that.

Not once.

Not in fifteen years.

Then Victoria's expression darkened.

"And she threw it away."

The hatred returned instantly.

"She chose Emma."

The warehouse fell silent again.

Daniel finally understood the depth of it.

Olivia hadn't merely exposed corruption.

She had chosen a child over an empire.

Chosen conscience over power.

And Victoria had never forgiven her.

Suddenly a phone rang.

One of Victoria's men answered.

His expression changed immediately.

He turned toward her.

"Ma'am."

Victoria frowned.

"What?"

The man swallowed.

Then spoke.

"We found the safe house."

Daniel's pulse accelerated.

Safe house.

Emma.

Victoria smiled slowly.

"Excellent."

The man hesitated.

Something was wrong.

Victoria noticed.

"What is it?"

The man looked nervous.

"She's not alone."

A long pause.

Then:

"Olivia Reed is there."

Everything stopped.

Daniel's breath vanished.

His sister.

Alive.

Found.

After fifteen years.

Richard's face went white.

Victoria simply smiled.

Not surprised.

Not relieved.

Triumphant.

As though she had been waiting for this moment.

For years.

"Prepare the vehicles."

Her voice became ice.

"We're ending this tonight."

---

Three hours later, deep beyond the city limits, a small farmhouse stood hidden among forests and rolling hills.

Rain clouds covered the moon.

Wind moved through the trees.

Inside the farmhouse, Emma sat trembling beside a fireplace.

Pain exploded behind her eyes.

Memory fragments flashed.

Hallways.

Needles.

White rooms.

Numbers.

Children crying.

Then a face.

A familiar face.

A woman kneeling before her.

Brown hair.

Determined eyes.

A gentle smile.

Olivia.

The memory struck harder than all the others.

Emma gasped.

More memories flooded back.

Running.

Hiding.

Changing names.

Crossing borders.

Years spent fleeing.

And Olivia always there.

Protecting her.

Saving her.

Again and again.

Then another memory surfaced.

The final one.

The memory someone had tried hardest to erase.

Emma suddenly stood.

Her hands shaking violently.

"No..."

The realization hit.

Complete.

Terrible.

Impossible.

She remembered who she was.

Not Emma.

Not originally.

That had been a fake name.

A name Olivia created to keep her hidden.

Her real name was—

The front door burst open.

A woman entered carrying supplies.

The moment she saw Emma standing there, she froze.

For several seconds neither moved.

Then tears filled the woman's eyes.

Emma's own eyes widened.

Because she recognized her immediately.

Not from photographs.

Not from stories.

From memory.

Real memory.

Fifteen years buried beneath darkness.

The woman dropped the bags.

"Emily..."

Emma began crying.

The name shattered the final barrier inside her.

Emily.

Not Emma.

Emily Carter.

The lost child of Project 731.

The girl everyone believed dead.

And standing before her now was the person who had sacrificed fifteen years of her life to keep her alive.

Olivia Reed.

At last, they had found each other again.

Neither woman noticed the headlights appearing beyond the trees.

Or the convoy of black vehicles moving through the darkness.

Or Victoria Blackwood sitting inside the lead car.

Smiling.

May you like

Because after fifteen years of searching...

She finally knew exactly where both of them were.
