CHAPTER 3 My Sister Never Ran Away

CHAPTER 3: THE VOICE IN THE DARK

For several seconds after the call ended, nobody moved.

The office felt frozen in time.

Daniel stared at the phone in his trembling hand.

The screen had already gone dark.

The call was over.

But the voice remained.

His sister's voice.

Fifteen years.

Fifteen years of lies.

Fifteen years of believing she had abandoned him.

And now, in less than ten seconds, everything had changed.

Claire was the first to speak.

"That was her."

It wasn't a question.

Daniel nodded slowly.

"Yes."

Victor Reed looked as though he had seen a ghost.

His face had lost all color.

"Impossible."

Daniel turned toward him.

"You said she escaped."

"I did."

"You said nobody had seen her for seven years."

Victor swallowed.

"Nobody had."

The alarm continued blaring throughout the building.

Its sharp sound echoed through the executive floor.

Something was wrong.

Very wrong.

Then Daniel's phone vibrated.

A text message.

Unknown number.

Only four words.

CHECK THE FLASH DRIVE.

Nothing else.

No signature.

No explanation.

Daniel looked up.

Sophia.

It had to be.

Claire moved closer.

"What does it say?"

He showed her.

She immediately looked toward the office computer.

Daniel understood.

The flash drive.

Whatever Sophia risked her life to protect was inside it.

He walked to the desk.

Inserted the drive.

The computer recognized it instantly.

One folder appeared.

No title.

No label.

Just a black icon.

Daniel clicked.

The folder opened.

Hundreds of files.

Photographs.

Financial records.

Audio recordings.

Videos.

Contracts.

Spreadsheets.

Thousands upon thousands of documents.

Claire gasped.

Victor slowly sat down.

Like a man whose worst nightmare had finally arrived.

Daniel opened the first file.

A list of names appeared.

Judges.

Police chiefs.

Mayors.

Corporate executives.

Politicians.

The list seemed endless.

Beside each name was a number.

Payments.

Bribes.

Transactions.

Dates.

Evidence.

Years of evidence.

Daniel scrolled.

The deeper he went, the darker it became.

Missing persons.

Witness intimidation.

Illegal business deals.

Human trafficking routes.

Money laundering operations.

Entire lives bought and sold.

Entire careers protected.

Entire investigations buried.

His stomach turned.

"Dear God..."

Claire covered her mouth.

Victor closed his eyes.

Daniel opened another file.

This one contained photographs.

He recognized some of the faces immediately.

Public figures.

Respected leaders.

People who appeared on television.

People who received awards.

People celebrated by society.

Monsters hiding behind expensive suits.

Then Daniel noticed something.

A separate folder.

Different from the rest.

Its title consisted of a single word.

SOPHIA.

His heartbeat quickened.

He opened it.

Inside were video recordings.

Dozens of them.

Each labeled with a date.

The earliest recording was nearly eight years old.

Daniel clicked play.

The screen flickered.

A woman appeared.

Older than he remembered.

Thinner.

Stronger.

Tired.

Yet unmistakably Sophia.

For a moment Daniel forgot how to breathe.

His sister looked directly into the camera.

"Hello, Daniel."

His eyes filled with tears.

Claire quietly stepped back.

Giving him space.

Sophia smiled sadly.

"If you're watching this, then things have gone badly."

The recording continued.

"I wish I could explain everything face-to-face."

Her expression softened.

"But life rarely gives us the ending we want."

Daniel sat down.

Unable to look away.

Sophia continued.

"You were seventeen the last time I saw you."

A faint smile crossed her face.

"You kept stealing my headphones and pretending you didn't."

Daniel laughed despite himself.

A painful laugh.

A memory he hadn't thought about in years.

Sophia's eyes grew emotional.

"I missed watching you grow up."

The words shattered him.

Tears rolled down his cheeks.

On screen, Sophia took a deep breath.

"Daniel, our family built its fortune on lies."

Victor lowered his head.

The accusation clearly wasn't new to him.

Sophia continued.

"Grandfather created the network."

Daniel listened carefully.

"He believed power mattered more than justice."

The screen showed scanned documents.

Old photographs.

Secret meetings.

Transactions.

Evidence.

More evidence than Daniel could process.

Sophia's voice continued over the images.

"Father discovered the truth years later."

Daniel froze.

What?

His father knew?

Sophia answered the question before he could ask it.

"At first he helped protect the organization."

Victor's expression darkened.

Clearly true.

Then Sophia continued.

"But eventually he wanted out."

The room fell silent.

Daniel remembered the hidden letter.

The guilt in his father's final years.

The constant arguments.

The stress.

The fear.

Suddenly many things made sense.

Sophia looked directly into the camera.

"Father wasn't innocent."

Daniel swallowed hard.

"But he wasn't the worst of them either."

A complicated truth.

The hardest kind.

Sophia continued.

"When he tried to expose certain members, they threatened our family."

Claire whispered:

"That's why she ran."

Victor nodded.

For once he didn't argue.

Sophia continued.

"I didn't leave because I wanted freedom."

Tears filled Daniel's eyes.

"I left because staying would have gotten you killed."

The words hit harder than anything else.

All those years.

All that anger.

All that resentment.

And she had been protecting him.

Sophia smiled sadly.

"I knew you would hate me."

Daniel wiped his eyes.

The screen blurred.

"I accepted that."

The recording continued for nearly twenty minutes.

When it finally ended, nobody spoke.

The silence felt sacred.

Then another file appeared automatically.

A newer recording.

Much newer.

Only three months old.

Daniel immediately opened it.

Sophia appeared again.

This time she looked different.

Older.

Exhausted.

But alive.

Definitely alive.

"Daniel."

Her voice was urgent.

"If you're seeing this recording, then I've made contact with Claire."

Claire stared at the screen.

Sophia smiled warmly.

"You made it."

Claire burst into tears.

Years of fear.

Years of pain.

Released in a single moment.

Sophia continued.

"There's something I never told you."

Claire listened.

Sophia took a deep breath.

"Your mother didn't die from illness."

Claire froze.

The room froze.

"What?"

Sophia continued.

"She was murdered."

Claire collapsed into a chair.

Daniel felt shock race through him.

Murdered?

The screen continued.

"The network killed her because she witnessed one of their operations."

Claire stared in disbelief.

Sophia's expression hardened.

"They made it look natural."

Victor whispered:

"My God."

Sophia looked directly into the camera.

"The same people who took your childhood took your mother."

Claire cried openly now.

Daniel felt sick.

Every truth revealed another layer of darkness.

Another betrayal.

Another crime.

Then Sophia's expression changed.

For the first time she seemed hopeful.

"There's one final thing."

Daniel leaned forward.

Sophia smiled.

A genuine smile.

"The evidence isn't the victory."

Daniel frowned.

What did that mean?

Sophia answered.

"The people are."

The recording shifted.

Photographs appeared.

Dozens.

Then hundreds.

Victims.

Families.

Survivors.

Children.

Witnesses.

People whose lives had been destroyed.

Sophia's voice continued.

"If we focus only on revenge, they win."

Daniel listened carefully.

"If we focus on saving people, we win."

The screen faded.

Then displayed coordinates.

A location.

Nothing more.

The recording ended.

Silence filled the office once again.

Daniel stared at the coordinates.

Victor looked troubled.

Claire wiped away tears.

Finally Daniel spoke.

"Where is this?"

Victor examined the numbers.

His eyes widened.

"I know that location."

Daniel looked at him.

"What is it?"

Victor hesitated.

Then answered.

"An old safe house."

Claire immediately stood.

"Sophia's?"

Victor nodded slowly.

Daniel's heart began pounding.

A safe house.

A location.

A real lead.

After fifteen years.

They finally had something.

Then the office door burst open.

Everyone jumped.

A security guard stumbled inside.

Blood on his forehead.

Fear in his eyes.

"Mr. Reed!"

Daniel rushed toward him.

"What happened?"

The guard pointed toward the elevators.

"They're here."

Instant silence.

Victor's face turned grim.

"How many?"

"At least twenty."

Daniel's stomach dropped.

Twenty.

Not random criminals.

Not hired thugs.

An organized assault.

The network had decided to move openly.

The guard struggled to breathe.

"They're coming up."

Victor stood.

The old hesitation was gone.

The uncertainty was gone.

For the first time all night, he looked decisive.

"Daniel."

"What?"

Victor pulled a handgun from inside his jacket.

Claire gasped.

Daniel stared.

Victor handed it to him.

"What are you doing?"

"Buying you time."

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

"Listen."

Victor grabbed his shoulder.

"Your sister spent fifteen years protecting this evidence."

His voice cracked slightly.

"Don't waste that sacrifice."

The elevator alarm dinged.

Everyone heard it.

The attackers had arrived.

Victor looked toward the hallway.

Then back at Daniel.

"Take Claire."

Daniel hesitated.

"Uncle—"

Victor interrupted him.

"There are things I should have done years ago."

The older man's eyes reflected regret.

A lifetime of regret.

"I don't deserve forgiveness."

Silence.

"But maybe I can earn redemption."

The hallway erupted with shouting.

Footsteps.

Many footsteps.

Getting closer.

Victor pointed toward a private emergency exit.

"Go."

Daniel looked at him one last time.

Then nodded.

Claire grabbed the flash drive.

The two of them ran.

Behind them, Victor remained inside the office.

Alone.

Waiting.

As Daniel reached the stairwell door, he heard the first gunshot.

Then another.

Then several more.

The battle had begun.

Daniel wanted to go back.

Wanted to help.

Wanted answers.

But Sophia's words echoed in his mind.

The people are the victory.

Not revenge.

Not anger.

Not blood.

People.

So he kept running.

Claire beside him.

The flash drive in her hand.

The coordinates burned into his memory.

Thirty floors below, they exited into a parking structure.

Rain poured from the night sky.

Cold.

Relentless.

Daniel unlocked his car.

Both climbed inside.

Neither spoke for several moments.

The engine started.

Headlights cut through the darkness.

Then Claire whispered:

"Do you think he's dead?"

Daniel tightened his grip on the steering wheel.

"I don't know."

The truth hurt.

Victor had lied.

Protected criminals.

Hidden the truth.

Yet he had also chosen to stay behind.

To fight.

To give them a chance.

People were complicated.

Sophia had been right about that too.

The city blurred past as they drove.

Toward the coordinates.

Toward the safe house.

Toward answers.

Halfway there, Daniel's phone vibrated again.

Another message.

This time from Sophia's number.

Only one sentence appeared.

A sentence that made his blood run cold.

Someone traveling with you betrayed me seven years ago.

Daniel stared at the screen.

Then slowly looked toward Claire.

Claire looked back at him.

Confused.

Afraid.

The rain hammered the windshield.

And suddenly Daniel realized something terrifying.

The message didn't say who the traitor was.

Only that one of the people he trusted had once delivered Sophia into the hands of her enemies.

And at that moment, there were only two possibilities.

Claire.

Or Victor.

Neither answer felt safe.

May you like

Neither answer felt survivable.

And somewhere ahead, hidden beyond the rain and darkness, waited the final truth that would decide all of their futures.
