Chapter 3 The silence in the room didn’t last long. Damian let out a short, uneasy laugh, trying to reclaim control.

Chapter 3 — The Midnight Ultimatum
The rain had turned into a torrential downpour by the time Veronica arrived at Elena’s private penthouse office. The arrogance she had displayed in the ballroom hours earlier was entirely gone. Her designer dress was wrinkled, her eyes red from crying, and her hands shook as she clutched her luxury handbag.
Elena sat behind a minimalist glass desk, a single lamp illuminating the room. She looked up as Veronica walked in, flanked by two silent security guards.
"Sit down, Veronica," Elena said smoothly.
Veronica didn't sit. She walked up to the desk, slamming her hands down on the glass. "You think you're clever, don't you? You think because you have some tech patents, you can destroy people like us? My father is a United States Senator, Elena! You cannot ruin my family!"
"I already have," Elena replied, not even flinching. She turned a laptop screen toward Veronica.
On the screen was a live, unredacted spreadsheet detailing the five million dollars of offshore capital funneled through the Vance Foundation. Beneath it was a draft copy of a federal indictment for campaign finance fraud, with Senator Vance’s name highlighted in red.
Veronica’s breath hitched. She stumbled back a step, her face turning ghostly pale. "How... how did you get this? Damian told me these accounts were untraceable."
"Damian is an idiot who thinks a complex password makes him invisible," Elena said, her voice dropping into a chillingly calm register.
"Every encrypted server Damian used was hosted on a network infrastructure built by Voss Global. I didn't have to hack him, Veronica. He built his house inside my backyard. Your father didn't just accept illegal campaign funds; he signed a non-disclosure agreement with a shell company that I own. I own his career. I own your foundation. And if I press a single key on this laptop, your family goes from Washington high society to a federal penitentiary by sunrise."
Veronica sank into the leather chair, her defiance completely broken. She began to sob, her shoulders shaking. "What do you want from me, Elena? Please... don't ruin my father. I'll leave Damian. I'll never see him again. Just tell me what it takes."
Elena closed the laptop with a soft, definitive click.
"Tomorrow morning, Damian is going to ask you to sign a joint legal affidavit claiming that I stole the Apex Century algorithms from your family’s tech sectors," Elena said, her eyes locked onto Veronica like a hawk. "You are going to refuse. And then, you are going to hand these financial records directly to the District Attorney yourself. You are going to be the state's star witness against Damian. You will sacrifice him to save your father."
Veronica looked up, horror in her eyes. "He... he loves me. He was going to marry me."

"He was going to use your family's name to protect his stolen money, Veronica," Elena said coldly, standing up and walking toward the glass window. "You were an investment to him. And today, the market crashed. Do we have a deal?"
Veronica closed her eyes, a heavy, bitter tear rolling down her cheek. "Yes," she whispered. "We have a deal."
