CHAPTER 3 The Bullet She Stole

CHAPTER 3 – THE SECRET IN THE BLOOD

The moment the call ended, Lena Carter ran.
Ignoring the pain in her wounded shoulder.
Ignoring the nurse shouting behind her.
Ignoring every warning from the doctors.
There was only one thing that mattered.
Ethan.
Her brother.
The only family she had left.
The boy she had practically raised after their parents died.
The boy who had spent more time in hospitals than at school.
The boy she would die for without hesitation.
And now someone had taken him.
Lena burst into the hospital hallway.
Two security guards immediately stepped into her path.
"Miss Carter, you need to return to your room."
"No."
She tried to push past them.
One gently blocked her.
"Please."
"My brother has been kidnapped!"
The words echoed down the corridor.
The guards exchanged worried glances.
Then a familiar voice spoke behind her.
"Move."
The guards instantly stepped aside.
Marco DeLuca approached.
His expression was unreadable.
But the moment he saw the panic in Lena's eyes, something changed.
"What happened?"
Lena thrust the phone toward him.
Marco read the message.
His jaw tightened.
Then he looked at her.
"Who called?"
"I don't know."
"What did they say?"
"They took Ethan."
The hallway suddenly felt colder.
Marco reached for the phone.
"Give me the number."
Lena handed it over.
One of Marco's men immediately began tracing the call.
Another started issuing orders through an earpiece.
The entire operation activated within seconds.
Like a military response.
Lena stared.
She had never seen power move this quickly.
Marco looked at her.
"Listen carefully."
His voice was calm.
Dangerously calm.
"We will find him."
"We?"
"You think you're doing this alone?"
"I don't want your help."
Marco's eyes narrowed.
"That's unfortunate."
"What does that mean?"
"It means whoever took your brother just declared war on me."
Lena blinked.
"What?"
Marco handed the phone back.
"Nobody touches someone under my protection."
"I'm not under your protection."
"You took a bullet for me."
His gaze hardened.
"Now you are."
An hour later.
The top floor of DeLuca Tower looked more like a war room than an office.
Massive screens covered the walls.
Maps of Chicago glowed across digital displays.
Phones rang nonstop.
Dozens of analysts worked around the clock.
Lena stood beside Marco, watching everything unfold.
The scale of his organization shocked her.
This wasn't a gang.
This wasn't even a crime family.
It was an empire.
One of Marco's men hurried forward.
"We traced the burner phone."
"Where?"
"Abandoned warehouse on the South Side."
"Send teams."
"They're already moving."
Marco nodded.
Another man approached.
"We found surveillance footage."
The screen changed.
A hospital parking garage appeared.
Lena immediately recognized Ethan.
He was sitting in a wheelchair.
A nurse pushed him toward a transport van.
Everything looked normal.
Until the nurse suddenly pulled a gun.
Two masked men emerged from the shadows.
Within seconds Ethan disappeared into the van.
Lena felt sick.
"Oh my God."
Marco studied the footage.
Something about it bothered him.
Then he froze.
"Pause."
The image stopped.
Marco stepped closer.
His eyes focused on a tattoo visible on one kidnapper's neck.
For several seconds he stared.
Then he whispered:
"No."
One of his captains frowned.
"What is it?"
Marco's expression darkened.
"I know that symbol."
The room went silent.
Because everyone knew what that meant.
Marco rarely looked worried.
But now he did.
And that terrified them.
Three hours later.
Across the city.
Ethan Carter sat tied to a metal chair.
His wrists hurt.
His head pounded.
The warehouse smelled of gasoline and rust.
He struggled against the ropes.
Pointlessly.
The men guarding him laughed.
One kicked his chair.
Another smoked nearby.
Ethan swallowed hard.
"Why am I here?"
Nobody answered.
Minutes later a door opened.
Every guard immediately stood.
A figure entered.
Tall.
Elegant.
Expensive suit.
Silver hair.
Cold smile.
The man looked more like a politician than a criminal.
Which somehow made him scarier.
He stopped in front of Ethan.
Studied him carefully.
Then smiled.
"So you're the boy."
Ethan frowned.
"What do you want?"
The man chuckled.
"You have your father's eyes."
Ethan froze.
His father's eyes?
Nobody talked about his father.
Not anymore.
The man crouched beside him.
"You don't know, do you?"
"Know what?"
The smile widened.
"Who your father really was."
Back at DeLuca Tower.
Lena paced endlessly.
Every minute felt like torture.
Every second without Ethan felt unbearable.
Finally Marco entered the room.
His face looked grim.
Lena immediately stood.
"What happened?"
Marco didn't answer right away.
Which scared her even more.
Then he said:
"The people who took Ethan aren't random criminals."
"Who are they?"
Marco looked directly at her.
"The Romano Family."
The name meant nothing to Lena.
But everyone else in the room reacted instantly.
Several men cursed.
Others exchanged nervous looks.
Lena noticed.
"Who are they?"
Marco answered quietly.
"My enemies."
Twenty years earlier.
The DeLucas and Romanos ruled Chicago together.
Partners.
Brothers.
Allies.
Then greed entered the picture.
Betrayal followed.
Bodies began appearing.
Territories changed hands.
A bloody war erupted.
By the time it ended, hundreds were dead.
Marco's father among them.
The Romanos vanished.
Most believed they had been destroyed.
Apparently they were wrong.
Very wrong.
Lena listened in disbelief.
"This can't be about Ethan."
"It is."
"Why?"
Marco looked away.
And that terrified her more than anything.
Because Marco DeLuca always seemed to know everything.
Yet now he appeared uncertain.
Finally he spoke.
"Because your father worked for them."
The room spun.
Lena stared.
"What?"
"Your father wasn't an accountant."
The words hit like a punch.
"What are you talking about?"
Marco sighed.
"Your father was Romano's chief financial officer."
Lena shook her head.
"No."
"It's true."
"No."
"He managed their money."
"NO."
Tears filled her eyes.
Because her father had been a good man.
A kind man.
An honest man.
The man who taught her to ride a bicycle.
The man who worked overtime to pay bills.
The man who tucked her into bed.
Marco continued softly.
"Twenty years ago, your father disappeared with something."
"What?"
"A ledger."
Silence.
"A list containing every secret account, every hidden asset, every corrupt official connected to the Romano organization."
Lena stared at him.
The implication slowly settled.
"They think Ethan knows where it is."
Marco nodded.
"Or they think you do."
Meanwhile.
Across town.
The Romano Family gathered inside a hidden estate.
The silver-haired man sat at the head of a long table.
His name was Vincent Romano.
The last surviving leader of the family.
And he wanted revenge.
One of his men approached nervously.
"Boss."
"What?"
"DeLuca's people are searching everywhere."
Vincent smiled.
"Good."
"They already found three safehouses."
"Good."
The man hesitated.
"Why?"
Vincent leaned back.
Because this wasn't about Ethan.
It wasn't about money.
It wasn't even about the ledger anymore.
This was personal.
Marco DeLuca's father had destroyed Vincent's family.
Now Vincent intended to destroy Marco's.
Slowly.
Painfully.
Publicly.
And Lena Carter had accidentally become the perfect weapon.
That evening.
A new message arrived.
This time it included a video.
Lena's hands shook as she pressed play.
Ethan appeared on screen.
Bruised.
Terrified.
Alive.
Relief nearly made her collapse.
Then Vincent Romano stepped into view.
The old man smiled directly at the camera.
"Good evening, Lena."
A chill ran through her body.
"If you're watching this, your brother is still alive."
Still alive.
The words felt intentional.
Threatening.
Vincent continued.
"Tomorrow at midnight, bring me the ledger."
Lena whispered:
"I don't have it."
The video continued.
"If you fail, your brother dies."
Vincent stepped aside.
A gun appeared against Ethan's head.
Lena gasped.
Ethan looked straight into the camera.
For a brief second.
Only a brief second.
He mouthed two words.
Words nobody else would notice.
But Lena did.
Because she had raised him.
Because she knew him.
Because she knew exactly what he was saying.
Behind.
Clock.
The video ended.
Marco immediately replayed it.
Again.
And again.
Then he froze the frame.
His eyes narrowed.
Behind Ethan sat an enormous antique clock mounted on a brick wall.
Marco smiled for the first time all day.
"You clever kid."
Lena looked at him.
"What?"
Marco pointed.
"That clock."
"What about it?"
"I know where it is."
The room erupted.
Men rushed for weapons.
Phones rang instantly.
Orders flew in every direction.
Marco grabbed his jacket.
"Get the cars ready."
One captain grinned.
"We found him?"
Marco's eyes turned deadly.
"No."
He looked toward the frozen image of Ethan.
"We found the battlefield."
And somewhere in the darkness of Chicago...
Hundreds of armed men began moving toward a single destination.
The biggest mafia war in twenty years was about to begin.
May you like
And before the sun rose...
Chicago would burn.
