Chapter 3 She Was Just Serving Coffee Until She Accidentally Saved a Mafia Kingpin

Chapter 3: The Traitor Within

Maddie barely slept.

Every time she closed her eyes, she saw shattered glass exploding through the diner windows.

She heard gunshots.

Saw frightened customers diving beneath tables.

Felt Nate's hand pulling her through the kitchen toward safety.

The events of the evening replayed over and over until dawn finally arrived.

Gray morning light filtered through the enormous guest room windows.

For a brief moment, she almost convinced herself the previous night had been a nightmare.

Then she noticed the armed guard standing outside her bedroom door.

Definitely real.

A soft knock interrupted her thoughts.

Before she could answer, the door opened.

The woman with short black hair stepped inside carrying a tray.

Coffee.

Toast.

Fresh fruit.

The same woman who had appeared in the alley beside Nate.

The woman who clearly trusted almost nobody.

"I figured you'd be awake."

Maddie sat up.

"You're Nate's head of security?"

The woman smirked.

"Good observation."

"You never answered my question last night."

"No."

She set the tray on a nearby table.

"I'm better than head of security."

Maddie raised an eyebrow.

The woman extended her hand.

"Rachel Torres."

The name sounded familiar.

Then Maddie remembered.

She had overheard customers talking about Rachel before.

Some claimed she had once worked for military intelligence.

Others insisted she had dismantled entire criminal organizations.

Nobody seemed to know the truth.

Rachel noticed her expression.

"Whatever stories you've heard are probably exaggerated."

That response alone confirmed most of them were true.

"Is Nate okay?" Maddie asked.

Rachel studied her carefully.

"He hasn't slept."

Neither had she.

Rachel glanced toward the window.

"We found something."

The tension in her voice immediately caught Maddie's attention.

"The ledger?"

"No."

Rachel's face darkened.

"We found evidence that somebody inside Nate's organization helped plan the attack."

The words settled heavily between them.

Maddie had suspected as much.

But hearing confirmation felt different.

More dangerous.

"Do you know who?"

Rachel shook her head.

"Not yet."

"Then everyone is a suspect?"

Rachel's silence answered the question.

Everyone.

Including people who had worked beside Nate for years.

Including trusted advisors.

Friends.

Family.

Anyone.

The realization made Maddie uncomfortable.

She had only known these people for a few hours.

Yet she could already feel paranoia infecting the house.

Every conversation felt guarded.

Every glance seemed calculated.

Trust was disappearing.

Fast.

Downstairs, the mansion buzzed with controlled chaos.

Phones rang continuously.

Security personnel moved between rooms carrying files and tablets.

Several large screens displayed maps of the city.

Maddie followed Rachel into what appeared to be a conference room.

Nate stood at the far end of a long table.

His jacket was gone.

His sleeves were rolled up.

Dark circles beneath his eyes revealed how exhausted he truly was.

Yet somehow he looked more dangerous than ever.

A dozen people sat around the table.

None looked happy.

Nate noticed Maddie immediately.

"You slept?"

"A little."

"Lucky you."

His attempt at humor failed.

The room was too tense.

Rachel handed him a folder.

He opened it.

The atmosphere instantly changed.

"What is it?" someone asked.

Nate tossed several photographs onto the table.

Every face around him hardened.

Maddie moved closer.

The images showed surveillance footage.

Warehouse parking lots.

Office buildings.

Gas stations.

Ordinary places.

But the same person appeared repeatedly.

A man in his early fifties.

Silver hair.

Expensive suits.

Confident posture.

Maddie had never seen him before.

The reaction around the room suggested everyone else had.

"Impossible," somebody whispered.

Another person shook his head.

"No."

Rachel crossed her arms.

"Unfortunately yes."

Maddie looked toward Nate.

His expression had become ice.

"Who is he?"

Nobody answered immediately.

Finally Rachel spoke.

"Victor Kane."

The room grew even quieter.

"One of Nate's closest advisers."

Maddie's stomach dropped.

Not just an insider.

A trusted insider.

Someone important.

Someone powerful.

Someone who knew everything.

Nate stared at the photographs.

His jaw tightened.

"How long?"

Rachel answered softly.

"At least six months."

The betrayal hit harder than any gunshot.

Everyone in the room felt it.

Six months.

For half a year Victor had apparently fed information to their enemies.

Six months of secrets.

Six months of lies.

Six months of preparation.

The attack at Lou's Diner suddenly made much more sense.

Someone had known exactly where Nate would be.

Exactly when he would arrive.

Exactly how security operated.

Because the information came from inside.

Nate slowly closed the folder.

"When do we move?"

Rachel looked surprised.

"You want him now?"

"I wanted him yesterday."

The room erupted into discussion.

Some argued for caution.

Others demanded immediate action.

Nate listened for less than thirty seconds before raising a hand.

Instant silence.

"Find him."

Simple.

Direct.

Terrifying.

Rachel nodded.

Already reaching for her phone.

Then an alarm sounded.

Every head turned.

One of the security analysts stood abruptly.

"We have a problem."

Nobody liked hearing those words.

The analyst swallowed.

"Victor's penthouse."

"What about it?"

"It's empty."

Nate wasn't surprised.

Neither was Rachel.

Of course Victor had run.

The moment he realized evidence existed, he would disappear.

Professional traitors rarely waited to be arrested.

The analyst continued.

"There is something else."

The room collectively tensed.

"His security cameras captured footage from two hours ago."

Nate looked up sharply.

"Show me."

The screen changed.

Video footage appeared.

A luxury penthouse lobby.

An elevator opening.

Victor Kane stepping outside.

He looked calm.

Relaxed.

Confident.

Not like a man fleeing.

Then another figure emerged behind him.

The room froze.

Maddie froze too.

Because she recognized him instantly.

The scarred man.

The man from booth seven.

The assassin.

The man who had almost killed Nate.

Victor and the assassin shook hands.

Then entered the elevator together.

Nobody spoke for several seconds.

The implication was obvious.

Victor wasn't merely leaking information.

He was working directly with the people responsible.

Nate stared at the screen.

His eyes revealed absolutely nothing.

Which somehow felt more frightening than anger.

"Track them."

"We're trying."

"Try harder."

By noon, the city had become a chessboard.

Vehicles moved continuously.

Phones never stopped ringing.

Teams spread across multiple districts.

Everybody searched for Victor Kane.

Nobody found him.

Hours passed.

Nothing.

The frustration inside headquarters became unbearable.

Maddie sat near one of the operations desks watching information flow across screens.

Addresses.

License plates.

Financial transactions.

Security footage.

Rachel appeared beside her.

"You've been staring at those monitors for an hour."

"I'm trying to help."

Rachel actually smiled.

"A waitress helping hunt organized criminals."

Maddie shrugged.

"Yesterday I was serving burgers."

"And today?"

Maddie looked around.

Today felt unreal.

She wasn't sure how to answer.

Rachel leaned closer.

"Something bothering you?"

"Actually yes."

Rachel waited.

"The men in the diner."

"What about them?"

"They kept looking at their watches."

Rachel frowned.

"So?"

Maddie hesitated.

"I'm not sure."

The thought had been bothering her all morning.

Something felt wrong.

The timing.

The behavior.

The tension.

She replayed every detail.

Then suddenly she sat upright.

Rachel immediately noticed.

"What?"

"The watches."

"What about them?"

"They weren't checking the time."

Rachel's expression changed.

"What do you mean?"

"They were synchronizing."

The words came faster now.

Excitement replacing uncertainty.

"They kept comparing times."

"Adjusting."

"Checking repeatedly."

Rachel stared at her.

Realization slowly appeared.

"A coordinated operation."

"Exactly."

Maddie pointed toward the city map displayed nearby.

"The diner attack."

"The SUVs."

"The motorcycle."

"Everything happened according to a schedule."

Rachel grabbed her radio instantly.

"Nate."

Static.

Then his voice.

"Go ahead."

"I think Maddie found something."

Thirty minutes later the entire leadership team gathered around a digital city map.

Maddie stood awkwardly at the front.

Feeling completely out of place.

Nate watched her closely.

"Explain."

She took a deep breath.

"The men at booth seven weren't nervous."

"They were waiting."

Several people exchanged glances.

She continued.

"They weren't watching clocks."

"They were following instructions."

Rachel nodded.

"Meaning?"

"Meaning someone coordinated multiple teams."

Maddie pointed toward various locations.

"The attack wasn't random."

"It was timed."

Nate's eyes narrowed.

"Keep going."

Confidence slowly grew.

"If everything happened according to schedule..."

She pointed toward a highlighted district.

"...then there had to be a command center."

Silence.

Everyone considered the possibility.

A location where the operation had been directed.

Communications.

Surveillance.

Coordination.

Control.

One person suddenly stood.

"We intercepted a signal."

The room turned.

The analyst looked excited.

"A warehouse."

Nate smiled for the first time all day.

A cold smile.

The kind predators made when prey finally exposed itself.

"Prepare a team."

Rachel already stood.

"We leave in ten minutes."

Maddie's pulse quickened.

Something big was about to happen.

She could feel it.

Nate looked directly at her.

"You're staying here."

"What?"

"Absolutely not."

Rachel agreed immediately.

"This isn't a discussion."

Maddie opened her mouth.

Then stopped.

Because deep down she knew they were right.

The people they hunted weren't ordinary criminals.

They were killers.

Professionals.

People who solved problems with bullets.

Nate approached.

For the first time his voice softened.

"You've already done enough."

Maddie looked into his eyes.

Something passed between them.

Respect.

Gratitude.

Something else neither wanted to acknowledge.

"Come back alive," she said quietly.

A faint smile touched his lips.

"I plan to."

The operation began at sunset.

Maddie remained at headquarters.

Watching through live surveillance feeds.

Waiting.

Praying.

The warehouse appeared abandoned from the outside.

Dark.

Silent.

Empty.

Exactly the kind of place dangerous people preferred.

Nate's convoy approached carefully.

Rachel led one assault team.

Another moved toward the rear entrance.

Everything unfolded with military precision.

For several tense minutes nothing happened.

Then chaos erupted.

The first explosion shook the building.

Gunfire followed instantly.

The surveillance room erupted into activity.

Multiple camera feeds flickered.

Operators shouted information.

Maddie's heart hammered.

On-screen figures moved through smoke and debris.

The battle looked brutal.

Fast.

Confusing.

Then suddenly one operator froze.

"Oh no."

The room went silent.

"What happened?" Maddie asked.

The operator stared at his monitor.

His face pale.

"They weren't waiting for us."

Nobody understood.

Then he clarified.

"They already left."

A cold feeling settled over the room.

The warehouse wasn't headquarters.

It was bait.

A trap.

The enemy had anticipated everything.

Even Maddie's discovery.

Even Nate's response.

The realization hit like a punch.

Someone was still feeding information from inside.

Victor Kane wasn't acting alone.

There was another traitor.

Another spy.

Still hidden.

Still watching.

Still listening.

May you like

And somewhere beyond the city lights, Victor Kane was smiling.

Because his real plan had only just begun.
