CHAPTER 3 SHE WAS FIRED FOR HELPING AN AUTISTIC GIRL — THEN HER MAFIA BOSS FATHER WALKED IN...

CHAPTER 3: THE MAN WHO OWNED THE CITY

The boutique had never been so silent.
Not when celebrities shopped there.
Not when billionaires argued over custom orders.
Not even when a famous actress fainted during Fashion Week.
Nothing compared to this.
Lorenzo Rossi slowly rose to his feet with Mia in his arms.
The little girl buried her face against his shoulder, still trembling.
His large hand moved gently through her blonde hair.
A father comforting his daughter.
Yet somehow, the sight felt more intimidating than anything else in the room.
Because everyone knew what kind of man Lorenzo Rossi was.
Or at least, they thought they did.
Rumors followed him everywhere.
Some called him a business genius.
Others called him a criminal who had simply become too powerful to prosecute.
Whatever the truth was, nobody wanted to stand on the wrong side of him.
Especially not Brenda Wallace.
Karen watched the color drain from the manager's face.
Brenda straightened her posture immediately.
A smile appeared.
The fake kind.
The dangerous kind.
"Mr. Rossi," she said nervously. "What an unexpected pleasure."
Lorenzo didn't answer.
His eyes remained on Mia.
"Are you hurt?" he asked softly.
Mia shook her head.
"Scared?"
A tiny nod.
His jaw tightened.
Just slightly.
But Karen noticed.
The men standing behind him noticed too.
One of them shifted his weight.
The atmosphere grew colder.
Lorenzo kissed Mia's forehead.
Then he finally looked up.
"Who helped her?"
The question sounded simple.
Nobody answered.
Not immediately.
Brenda forced a laugh.
"Our staff handled the situation."
Karen nearly choked.
Handled?
The child had been seconds away from being dragged outside.
Lorenzo's gaze moved across the room.
He saw the disabled spotlight.
The expensive scarf wrapped around Mia's shoulders.
The tear stains on Karen's blouse where Mia had clung to her.
He saw everything.
Then Mia lifted her head.
"Karen helped me."
Every eye in the boutique turned toward Karen.
For a moment she wished the marble floor would open beneath her.
Lorenzo studied her.
Not as a rich man looking at an employee.
Not even as a father looking at someone who had helped his child.
It felt more like an investigation.
As though he were measuring every word she had ever spoken.
Finally he asked:
"What did you do?"
Karen swallowed.
"I turned off the light."
Silence.
"I gave her pressure with the scarf."
Silence.
"I stayed calm."
Still silence.
Then Mia spoke.
"She didn't yell."
Something flashed in Lorenzo's eyes.
Pain.
Real pain.
As though that tiny sentence hurt him.
Karen suddenly realized something.
This wasn't the first time Mia had been overwhelmed.
And maybe not everyone had treated her kindly.
Lorenzo crouched beside his daughter.
"Would you like to sit with Karen for a minute?"
Mia nodded instantly.
The answer came so fast that even Karen was surprised.
Lorenzo carefully set her down.
The child walked straight back to Karen and grabbed her hand.
The boutique collectively stopped breathing.
Brenda looked horrified.
Karen looked confused.
And Lorenzo...
Lorenzo looked stunned.
One of the bodyguards leaned toward him.
"Boss."
Lorenzo ignored him.
His eyes never left his daughter.
"She doesn't do that," he said quietly.
Karen frowned.
"What?"
"Trust people."
The words landed heavily.
Mia squeezed Karen's hand tighter.
Lorenzo's expression darkened.
Not with anger.
With memory.
Bad memory.
Karen knew that look.
People only carried that look after surviving something terrible.
Brenda suddenly jumped in.
"Mr. Rossi, we deeply apologize for the disruption."
Lorenzo turned toward her.
For the first time.
The manager visibly flinched.
"What disruption?"
The question was calm.
Deadly calm.
Brenda hesitated.
"The incident."
"What incident?"
"The screaming."
Lorenzo's eyes hardened.
"My daughter was in distress."
Nobody spoke.
"That is not a disruption."
His voice remained quiet.
Which somehow made it worse.
"That is a child needing help."
Brenda's smile collapsed.
Karen almost felt sorry for her.
Almost.
Then Lorenzo asked the question that changed everything.
"Who ordered security to remove her?"
The room froze.
Karen felt her heartbeat stop.
Brenda looked trapped.
Because everyone knew the answer.
Customers had heard it.
Employees had heard it.
Security had heard it.
The silence became its own confession.
Lorenzo waited.
Five seconds.
Ten.
Fifteen.
Finally Brenda whispered:
"I did."
The temperature in the room seemed to drop ten degrees.
Mia hid behind Karen.
Lorenzo noticed.
And that made everything worse.
Much worse.
"Interesting."
That single word carried enough weight to crush stone.
Brenda began speaking rapidly.
"You have to understand. We maintain a luxury environment. Other customers were uncomfortable—"
"Other customers?"
His voice interrupted her.
Soft.
Controlled.
Terrifying.
"You were more concerned about customers than a frightened child?"
Brenda opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Lorenzo nodded slowly.
As though he had learned something important.
Something unpleasant.
Then he looked at Karen.
"Is it true?"
Karen hesitated.
This was dangerous territory.
Brenda was still technically her boss.
Or had been.
Thirty seconds ago.
Yet Mia's fingers tightened around her hand.
Karen made her choice.
"Yes."
One word.
Truth.
Nothing else.
Lorenzo's eyes never blinked.
"What happened after you helped her?"
Karen's stomach twisted.
She glanced at Brenda.
The manager looked ready to explode.
Karen looked back at Lorenzo.
"She fired me."
The room erupted.
Customers gasped.
Employees exchanged shocked looks.
One woman whispered:
"Oh my God."
Brenda's face turned white.
Lorenzo stared.
Not angry.
Not yet.
Just very still.
The dangerous kind of still.
"She fired you."
"Yes."
"For helping my daughter."
Karen nodded.
Mia suddenly spoke.
"She was mean."
Nobody had prepared Brenda for that.
The manager looked horrified.
"Mia, sweetheart—"
"Don't call me sweetheart."
The little girl's voice was tiny.
Yet the words hit like bullets.
Karen watched Lorenzo close his eyes.
Just briefly.
As though he were running out of patience.
When he opened them again, the decision had already been made.
Everyone could see it.
Brenda could see it too.
"Mr. Rossi—"
"Stop."
She stopped.
Immediately.
Lorenzo reached into his jacket.
The movement triggered instant reactions.
His bodyguards tensed.
Employees panicked.
Brenda nearly stumbled backward.
Then Lorenzo removed a phone.
Nothing more.
He pressed one button.
The call connected instantly.
"Yes, sir," a voice answered.
"Who owns this building?"
The boutique became even quieter.
The voice responded.
Lorenzo listened.
"Thank you."
He ended the call.
Then he looked at Brenda.
"You lease this location."
Her lips trembled.
"Yes."
"The owner owes me several favors."
Nobody breathed.
"And I collect my favors."
Karen felt her stomach drop.
Brenda looked like she might faint.
Lorenzo wasn't yelling.
That was the frightening part.
Power didn't need volume.
Power simply existed.
He turned toward Karen.
"What is your full name?"
"Karen Seymour."
"What were you earning here?"
Karen blinked.
"What?"
"Your salary."
She told him.
His eyebrows lifted.
Apparently even he thought it was terrible.
Which said something.
Then he nodded.
"Interesting."
The same word.
But this time directed at Karen.
Not Brenda.
And somehow that felt very different.
Mia tugged on his sleeve.
"Papa?"
"Yes?"
"Can Karen come with us?"
The entire room froze again.
Karen's eyes widened.
Brenda's mouth opened.
Even the bodyguards looked surprised.
Lorenzo stared at his daughter.
Then at Karen.
Then back at his daughter.
A strange expression crossed his face.
For the first time since entering the boutique, he almost looked amused.
Almost.
And that frightened Karen more than anything else.
Because she had the feeling her life was about to change.
Completely.
May you like
She just didn't know whether that change would save her.
Or destroy her.
