Chapter 3 She Thought She Ruled This Mansion—Until the Door Swung Open and Her Worst Nightmare Stepped Inside

Chapter 3: The First Clue

The photograph trembled in Sebastian Blackwood's hands.

Eleven years.

Eleven years of believing the woman he loved had vanished without a trace.

Now one faded surveillance image had shattered everything he thought he knew.

Oliver stood beside him, unable to look away from the picture.

The woman smiled faintly despite the fear in her eyes.

She looked tired.

Exhausted.

But unmistakably alive.

"Mom..."

The single word escaped like a prayer.

Sebastian placed a steady hand on his son's shoulder.

"We're going to find her."

His voice carried absolute certainty.

Not hope.

A promise.

Across the foyer, Victoria's breathing became shallow.

Detective Ryan Mercer noticed immediately.

"You recognize this photograph, don't you?"

Victoria remained silent.

The detective stepped closer.

"It was taken outside a train station in Billings, Montana."

Nothing.

"We've confirmed the timestamp."

Still nothing.

"But something about it terrifies you."

Victoria slowly lifted her head.

"You have no idea what you're dealing with."

Sebastian's eyes narrowed.

"Then explain."

She laughed.

Not confidently.

Desperately.

"You think I planned all of this?"

The detective exchanged a glance with Sebastian.

"What do you mean?"

Victoria looked toward the rain-covered windows.

"I was never the one in charge."

Silence crashed over the room.

Oliver frowned.

"What?"

Victoria closed her eyes.

"You think I stole your money because I wanted to be rich?"

She shook her head.

"I spent every dollar exactly where I was told."

Sebastian's expression darkened.

"Told by whom?"

Victoria refused to answer.

The detective opened another folder.

"We searched your private office this afternoon."

He removed a small black notebook.

Victoria's face drained of color.

"You found it..."

"We did."

Inside were dozens of names.

Dates.

Bank account numbers.

Encrypted codes.

And one symbol repeated on nearly every page.

A silver raven.

Sebastian leaned forward.

"I've seen that before."

The detective looked up.

"Where?"

Sebastian's face hardened.

"On the wreckage."

Everyone froze.

"My plane."

His heartbeat quickened.

"There was a metal plate inside the cockpit."

He could see it again.

Bent steel.

Smoke.

Fire.

And carved into the damaged panel—

A silver raven.

Detective Mercer slowly closed the notebook.

"So your crash wasn't an accident."

"No."

Sebastian's answer came instantly.

"It never was."

Oliver stared at his father.

"Someone wanted to kill you?"

Before Sebastian could answer—

The mansion lights suddenly went out.

Darkness swallowed the foyer.

Mrs. Harper screamed.

Glass shattered somewhere upstairs.

The security alarm exploded into life.

Then—

Bang!

A gunshot echoed through the mansion.

Oliver instinctively grabbed his father.

Sebastian pulled the boy behind him.

"Stay down!"

Another shot.

This one closer.

The detective drew his weapon.

"Police! Don't move!"

Only silence answered.

Lightning flashed through the tall windows.

For a fraction of a second, everyone saw the same thing.

A shadow.

Standing on the grand staircase.

Watching them.

Then disappearing into the darkness.

Sebastian reacted instantly.

"Ryan!"

"I'm on him!"

The detective raced upstairs.

Sebastian followed without hesitation.

Victoria remained frozen.

"No..."

She whispered.

"No, he's here."

Oliver heard her.

"Who?"

She looked directly at him.

Her face had turned ghostly white.

"The man I was afraid of."

A loud crash echoed from the second floor.

Then another.

Footsteps.

Running.

Shouting.

Detective Mercer's voice thundered through the mansion.

"Stop!"

A window shattered.

By the time Sebastian reached the hallway, icy rain poured through the broken glass.

The intruder was gone.

Only one thing remained.

A small black envelope resting on the windowsill.

Sebastian picked it up carefully.

There was no address.

No stamp.

Only one silver raven embossed in wax.

His pulse quickened.

He broke the seal.

Inside lay a single sheet of paper.

Six words.

STOP LOOKING FOR OLIVIA.

Beneath the message was something else.

A recent photograph.

Not eleven years old.

Not faded.

Not blurry.

It had been taken only days ago.

Olivia stood beside a quiet lakeside cabin.

She was older.

Her hair was shorter.

But she was alive.

And she wasn't alone.

Standing beside her...

Was a teenage girl.

She looked about fifteen years old.

She had Olivia's eyes.

Sebastian's dark hair.

And around her neck hung a silver pendant engraved with one name.

Emily Blackwood.

Oliver stared at the photograph.

His voice barely worked.

"...I have a sister?"

No one answered.

Because every person in the room was asking the exact same question.

Who was Emily Blackwood?

And why had someone hidden her existence for fifteen years?

Outside, thunder rolled across the mountains.

Somewhere far away, inside a secluded cabin surrounded by pine forests, Olivia looked out the window as headlights appeared on the lonely road leading toward her home.

She whispered only one sentence.

"They found us."

The knock on the front door came three seconds later.
