CHAPTER 3 She Didn't Run Away — They Made Her Disappear

CHAPTER 3 — Project 731

Daniel had never driven so fast in his life.

Rain hammered against the windshield as the city blurred past in streaks of light and shadow. Every red traffic light felt like an enemy. Every second felt stolen.

His phone sat on the passenger seat.

The message remained on the screen.

WE FOUND THE GIRL.

No sender.

No explanation.

No mistake.

Someone knew exactly who Emma was.

And they wanted Daniel to know they had found her.

His hands tightened around the steering wheel.

"Hold on," he whispered.

He wasn't even sure whether he was talking to Emma or himself.

The elevator ride to his apartment floor felt endless.

The moment the doors opened, he ran.

His heart pounded.

His key nearly slipped from his hand.

Then he unlocked the door and rushed inside.

"Emma!"

Silence.

The living room was empty.

The blanket he had placed over her was lying on the floor.

One of the cushions had been knocked over.

A coffee mug lay shattered near the kitchen island.

Daniel's stomach dropped.

Something had happened.

Fast.

Violent.

He searched every room.

Bedroom.

Bathroom.

Office.

Closets.

Nothing.

Emma was gone.

For a moment he stood completely still.

Trying to think.

Trying not to panic.

Then he noticed something on the dining table.

A folded piece of paper.

His pulse accelerated.

He grabbed it.

Three words.

Don't trust anyone.

Below the message was a number.

731

Daniel stared.

The same number Emma had remembered from her nightmare.

The same number she insisted was important.

Now it was here.

Waiting for him.

A warning.

Or an invitation.

Before he could decide which, his phone rang.

Richard Reed.

His father.

Daniel answered immediately.

"What happened?"

Richard's voice sounded strained.

"Listen carefully."

"What happened to Emma?"

"I don't know."

Daniel nearly shouted.

"You said Blackwood was dangerous!"

"And I'm telling you now that you're running out of time."

Silence.

Then Richard spoke again.

"Meet me at the old Reed warehouse."

Daniel frowned.

"What warehouse?"

"Pier Nine."

The older man's voice lowered.

"And come alone."

The line disconnected.

Daniel stared at the screen.

Everything felt wrong.

Every direction led deeper into uncertainty.

Yet one thing was clear.

His father finally knew something.

And Daniel intended to find out exactly what.

Pier Nine sat on the edge of the harbor.

The building had once belonged to Reed Industries decades earlier.

Now it stood abandoned.

Dark.

Silent.

Forgotten.

Daniel parked nearby and stepped out into the cold night air.

The rain had finally stopped.

Fog drifted across the water.

The entire harbor looked haunted.

A single light glowed inside the warehouse.

Daniel entered cautiously.

The enormous structure echoed with every step.

Dust covered the concrete floor.

Broken machinery stood like skeletons in the darkness.

Then he saw his father.

Richard Reed stood beside an old metal desk.

For the first time in Daniel's life, he looked frightened.

Not concerned.

Not worried.

Frightened.

"You came."

Daniel ignored the greeting.

"Where is Emma?"

"I don't know."

Daniel took a step forward.

"I'm tired of that answer."

Richard nodded slowly.

"So am I."

For several seconds neither spoke.

Then Richard opened a metal drawer.

Inside sat a thick folder.

Yellowed.

Old.

Hidden.

He placed it on the desk.

The front contained only two words.

PROJECT 731.

Daniel's pulse quickened.

The same number.

Again.

"What is this?"

Richard looked away.

"The reason Olivia disappeared."

The warehouse suddenly felt colder.

Daniel opened the folder.

The first pages contained photographs.

Buildings.

Medical facilities.

Laboratories.

Names.

Dates.

Financial records.

Then he turned another page.

His blood froze.

Children.

Dozens of them.

Some smiling.

Some frightened.

Some staring directly into the camera.

Every photograph contained a number beneath it.

No names.

Only numbers.

Subjects.

Experiments.

Daniel felt sick.

"What is this?"

Richard's voice became quiet.

"The truth."

Daniel continued reading.

According to the documents, Blackwood Foundation had secretly funded a neurological research program fifteen years earlier.

Officially it focused on memory disorders and trauma recovery.

Unofficially it became something else.

Something darker.

Researchers discovered methods of altering memory.

Suppressing memories.

Erasing them.

Rewriting them.

Daniel looked up.

"No."

His father nodded grimly.

"Yes."

The realization hit instantly.

Emma.

The gaps in her memory.

The missing years.

The nightmares.

The fragmented recollections.

She wasn't naturally forgetful.

Someone had done something to her.

"Olivia found out."

Richard's voice echoed through the warehouse.

"She discovered the program."

Daniel stared.

"What did she do?"

Richard laughed bitterly.

"What do you think she did?"

The answer came immediately.

"She tried to stop it."

"Exactly."

Silence settled between them.

Then Richard continued.

"She collected evidence."

"These files?"

"No."

His expression darkened.

"Something much bigger."

Daniel's heartbeat accelerated.

"What happened then?"

Richard closed his eyes.

For a moment he looked like a man reliving his worst memory.

"They came for her."

Daniel felt cold.

"Who?"

"The people running Blackwood."

His father pointed toward the photographs.

"Not everyone on the board knew what was happening."

Daniel frowned.

"You didn't know?"

Richard's expression became painful.

"I suspected."

"That's different."

"Yes."

The single word carried years of regret.

Years of guilt.

Years of mistakes.

Daniel suddenly understood.

His father wasn't innocent.

But neither was he the mastermind Daniel had imagined.

He had seen warning signs.

And done nothing.

Until it was too late.

"What happened to Olivia?"

Richard stared at the folder.

Then he spoke the words Daniel had waited fifteen years to hear.

"She's alive."

Everything stopped.

The warehouse.

The harbor.

The world itself.

Alive.

The word echoed through Daniel's mind.

Again.

Again.

Again.

Alive.

His sister was alive.

Not dead.

Not missing.

Alive.

Daniel's voice barely worked.

"You know where she is?"

Richard nodded.

Slowly.

Painfully.

"Not exactly."

Daniel's hope collapsed slightly.

"What does that mean?"

"It means she vanished before they could capture her."

His father pointed toward another photograph.

A younger Olivia.

Taken fifteen years earlier.

Strong.

Determined.

Fearless.

"She spent years exposing Blackwood."

Daniel stared at the image.

For the first time he wasn't looking at the runaway daughter from family stories.

He was looking at a fighter.

A woman who had risked everything.

Including her life.

Then Richard handed him another document.

A recent photograph.

Only six months old.

Daniel's hands shook.

It was Olivia.

Older now.

Thinner.

But unmistakably Olivia.

Alive.

Daniel couldn't breathe.

He touched the image.

As if proving it was real.

"Where was this taken?"

Richard answered immediately.

"Prague."

Daniel looked up.

"Six months ago?"

"Yes."

Hope exploded inside him.

For the first time in fifteen years his sister wasn't just a memory.

She was real.

Somewhere in the world.

Still fighting.

Still surviving.

Still searching for answers.

Then a gunshot shattered the silence.

The warehouse exploded with noise.

Glass shattered.

Metal screamed.

Richard staggered backward.

Daniel's eyes widened.

Blood spread across his father's shoulder.

A sniper.

Outside.

Another shot rang out.

The bullet slammed into the desk.

Daniel dropped to the floor.

His father collapsed beside him.

"Dad!"

Richard gritted his teeth.

"Get down!"

More gunfire.

The windows shattered completely.

Fog rushed inside.

Someone was coming.

Several people.

Fast.

Professional.

Organized.

Daniel's heart hammered.

Blackwood had found them.

The warehouse doors burst open.

Dark figures entered.

Armed.

Silent.

Dangerous.

Then a voice echoed across the darkness.

Cold.

Female.

Familiar.

"Take the folder."

The sound froze Richard instantly.

Daniel saw pure terror cross his father's face.

Not fear.

Recognition.

The woman stepped forward.

Tall.

Elegant.

Perfectly composed.

Her dark coat moved with the wind.

Her eyes were calm.

Almost emotionless.

She looked directly at Daniel.

Then at the Project 731 file.

And smiled.

"Hello, Daniel."

The smile never reached her eyes.

"My name is Victoria Blackwood."

May you like

She paused.

"And your sister has been causing me problems for a very long time."
