CHAPTER 3 – PART 2: "One Slap, One Phone Call, and the Sinclair Empire Fell Overnight"

CHAPTER 3 – PART 2: THE HUNTERS IN THE DARK

Ethan stared at Victor Sinclair.
The room suddenly felt too small.
Too quiet.
Too dangerous.
Rain struck the office windows like bullets.
Neither man spoke for several seconds.
Finally Ethan broke the silence.
"What did you just say?"
Victor leaned back comfortably.
"As I said, Amelia Hartwell is in danger."
Ethan narrowed his eyes.
"Who are you?"
The older man's smile never faded.
"A relative."
"I don't have relatives named Victor."
Victor laughed softly.
"Oh, but you do."
Ethan's pulse quickened.
Something about this conversation felt wrong.
Every instinct told him to end it.
To call security.
To throw the stranger out.
Yet he couldn't ignore the mention of Amelia.
"What danger?"
Victor stood.
He slowly walked toward the window.
His reflection appeared ghostlike against the storm outside.
"Tell me something, Ethan."
Silence.
"How well do you really know your father?"
The question caught him off guard.
"My father has nothing to do with this."
Victor chuckled.
"That's what you think."
Then he turned.
The smile vanished.
For the first time, Ethan saw something cold beneath the man's calm exterior.
Something frightening.
"Your father has been hiding secrets for decades."
Ethan crossed his arms.
"Leave."
Victor ignored him.
"He lied to you."
"Get out."
"He lied to your mother."
"Get out."
"And he lied about me."
The room became silent.
Victor reached into his jacket.
Ethan instantly tensed.
But the man only removed an old photograph.
He placed it on the desk.
Then stepped back.
Ethan looked down.
His heart stopped.
The photograph showed two young men.
One was unmistakably Richard Sinclair.
The other was Victor.
Standing side by side.
Brothers.
The picture looked nearly forty years old.
Ethan stared in disbelief.
"No..."
Victor nodded.
"Yes."
The world tilted beneath Ethan's feet.
Everything Amelia discovered.
Everything Arthur Hartwell left behind.
It was true.
Victor Sinclair existed.
And somehow his family had hidden him from the world.
"Why?"
Victor smiled again.
"Because dead men don't pay taxes."
The answer chilled Ethan.
Victor turned toward the door.
Then paused.
"Find Amelia."
Ethan frowned.
"What?"
Victor's eyes darkened.
"Find her before they do."
Then he left.
Just like that.
The office door closed.
And Ethan remained frozen beside the photograph.
For the first time in his life, he wasn't sure who his family truly was.
Across the city.
Amelia sat inside the secure conference room beneath Hartwell Tower.
Twenty-seven floors above her, business continued normally.
Employees worked.
Executives held meetings.
Phones rang.
Deals were negotiated.
Nobody knew a war had begun.
The security chief placed several photographs on the table.
Amelia studied them carefully.
Images from her penthouse.
Broken locks.
Tampered cameras.
Forced entry points.
Professional work.
Whoever entered knew exactly what they were doing.
"They left no fingerprints," the security chief said.
"No DNA."
"No surveillance footage."
Amelia nodded slowly.
"Professionals."
"Very."
She looked toward the photograph Arthur had hidden.
Victor Sinclair.
The ghost who wasn't dead.
The man connected to everything.
Her phone suddenly vibrated.
Unknown number.
The security chief immediately shook his head.
"Don't answer."
Amelia hesitated.
Then answered anyway.
Silence.
No voice.
Only breathing.
Slow.
Deliberate.
The hairs on her neck stood up.
"Who is this?"
A pause.
Then a man's voice.
Calm.
Dangerously calm.
"You opened the vault."
Amelia froze.
Every person in the room looked up.
The caller continued.
"You should have left the past buried."
Her pulse accelerated.
"Victor?"
A soft chuckle.
The line went silent.
Then disconnected.
Nobody spoke.
The room felt ice cold.
Because the call confirmed something terrible.
Victor knew.
He knew about Arthur's files.
He knew about the vault.
And now he knew Amelia was investigating.
The hunt had officially begun.
Three hours later.
The first attack came.
Amelia's motorcade moved through downtown traffic.
Three armored vehicles.
Six security personnel.
Standard precautions.
Nothing unusual.
Until the truck appeared.
The black delivery truck ignored a red light.
Accelerated.
And slammed directly into the lead vehicle.
The impact sounded like an explosion.
Metal twisted.
Glass shattered.
People screamed.
Amelia's security team reacted instantly.
"AMBUSH!"
The second SUV swerved.
Tires screamed across wet pavement.
Another vehicle appeared from nowhere.
Then another.
Then another.
Four black SUVs.
Moving with military precision.
Not criminals.
Not random attackers.
Professionals.
Amelia's heart pounded.
Gunfire erupted.
The city street exploded into chaos.
Pedestrians ran.
Drivers abandoned vehicles.
The sound of automatic weapons echoed between skyscrapers.
One security officer shouted into his radio.
"We're under attack!"
Amelia ducked lower.
Bullets struck armored glass.
The impacts sounded like hammer blows.
Someone wanted her dead.
Not threatened.
Not intimidated.
Dead.
The realization felt surreal.
Only days earlier she had been planning a wedding.
Now assassins were hunting her in broad daylight.
The driver accelerated.
The SUV burst through an intersection.
Another attacker vehicle closed in.
Too fast.
Too close.
The security chief grabbed Amelia's shoulder.
"Brace!"
A violent collision rocked the vehicle.
The attacker rammed them.
Once.
Twice.
A third time.
Metal screamed.
The SUV nearly spun out.
Then—
A new vehicle entered the fight.
A black sports sedan.
Moving at impossible speed.
It slammed into one attack vehicle.
The collision forced the attackers off course.
Amelia looked through the shattered side window.
And couldn't believe what she saw.
"Ethan?"
The sedan skidded sideways.
Ethan Sinclair sat behind the wheel.
His face grim.
Focused.
Determined.
The attackers immediately shifted attention.
Gunfire tore toward him.
He didn't slow down.
Didn't hesitate.
Didn't run.
Instead he accelerated directly into danger.
The security chief stared.
"What the hell is he doing?"
Amelia already knew.
He was protecting her.
The same man who froze at the wedding.
The same man who failed her.
Now risking his life without hesitation.
The irony wasn't lost on her.
Another collision.
Another explosion.
One attacker vehicle flipped.
Rolling across the roadway.
Traffic scattered.
Chaos consumed the street.
Ethan finally reached Amelia's SUV.
Their vehicles moved side by side.
For one brief second their eyes met.
Neither smiled.
Neither spoke.
Yet something passed between them.
Something neither had expected.
Trust.
Not complete.
Not restored.
But beginning.
A sharp crack interrupted the moment.
A sniper shot.
The windshield beside Ethan exploded.
Blood appeared.
Amelia gasped.
"Ethan!"
His sedan swerved violently.
The sniper fired again.
This time the bullet struck the engine.
Smoke erupted.
The vehicle lost control.
Spinning.
Sliding.
Heading directly toward a concrete barrier.
Time seemed to stop.
Amelia watched helplessly.
The sedan crashed.
Metal twisted.
Glass shattered.
Everything disappeared beneath smoke and debris.
"No!"
Her scream echoed through the vehicle.
The convoy accelerated away.
Security protocols demanded escape.
Not rescue.
Yet Amelia couldn't look away.
Smoke filled the street.
Emergency sirens approached from every direction.
The security chief grabbed her arm.
"We have to move."
She couldn't breathe.
Couldn't think.
Because one terrifying question repeated itself again and again.
Was Ethan alive?
Miles away.
Inside a private penthouse.
Victor Sinclair watched the attack footage on multiple screens.
His expression remained calm.
Almost bored.
Several armed men stood nearby.
Waiting.
Listening.
Fearful.
One of them finally spoke.
"Sir."
Victor didn't look away from the screens.
"What?"
"The assassination failed."
Silence.
The man swallowed.
Waiting for anger.
Waiting for punishment.
Instead Victor smiled.
A terrifying smile.
"Good."
Everyone in the room froze.
Good?
The man blinked.
"Sir?"
Victor leaned forward.
Watching Amelia's vehicle escape.
Watching Ethan's crash.
Watching the chaos unfold.
Then he spoke quietly.
"Dead people can't lead us to Arthur's secret."
The room became silent.
Because suddenly everyone understood.
Amelia had never been the target.
Not really.
She was the key.
And Victor Sinclair intended to follow that key straight to whatever Arthur Hartwell had hidden.
No matter how many people died along the way.
Meanwhile, in the wreckage of the destroyed sedan, a blood-covered hand slowly emerged from the smoke.
May you like
Ethan Sinclair was still alive.
And the real nightmare was only beginning...
