CHAPTER 2 "Two Pregnant Women. One Billionaire. One Family Secret That Destroyed an Empire"

CHAPTER 2: THE DOOR TO HELL

For a moment, nobody moved.

The city lights glittered beyond the floor-to-ceiling windows of the penthouse, thousands of tiny stars scattered across Manhattan.

Inside the nursery, however, the air felt dead.

Marcus stared at his mother.

I stared at both of them.

And Catherine Sterling looked perfectly comfortable.

As though she had merely announced tomorrow’s weather.

"Months?" Marcus repeated.

His voice sounded foreign.

The same man who had negotiated billion-dollar mergers now sounded like a child trying to understand a nightmare.

"You knew for months?"

Catherine folded her hands neatly in her lap.

"Six months, actually."

The silence that followed felt violent.

Marcus slowly stood.

I had never seen fear in his eyes before.

Not real fear.

Not the kind that came from discovering someone had been lying to him for half a year.

"You knew Jessica was pregnant?"

"Yes."

"You knew there was a possibility the child was mine?"

"Not possibility," Catherine corrected calmly. "Probability."

Marcus looked as though someone had punched him.

"And you said nothing?"

Catherine sighed.

"Marcus, please stop behaving emotionally."

I laughed.

The sound shocked all three of us.

Emotionally.

I was seven months pregnant.

My husband had cheated on me.

My best friend was carrying his child.

And apparently my mother-in-law had known for months.

Yet Marcus was the emotional one.

"Tell her," I whispered.

Marcus turned toward me.

"What?"

"Tell me this is the first time you've heard any of this."

"It is."

His answer came instantly.

Without hesitation.

For some reason, I believed him.

That was almost worse.

Because it meant the betrayal reached even deeper than I had imagined.

Catherine stood.

"Enough."

"No," Marcus snapped.

His voice cracked through the room like thunder.

I had never heard him speak to his mother that way.

Not once in eight years.

"No, we're not done."

Something flickered across Catherine's face.

Not guilt.

Not shame.

Annoyance.

As though her son had become inconvenient.

"Why?" Marcus demanded.

"Why would you hide this?"

Catherine looked toward me.

Then she said something that changed everything.

"Because Elena wasn't supposed to find out."

The room went silent.

Every muscle in my body locked.

"What did you say?"

Catherine's expression remained perfectly composed.

"I said Elena wasn't supposed to find out."

My heartbeat became deafening.

Marcus stared at her.

His jaw tightened.

"What does that mean?"

"It means exactly what it sounds like."

I felt cold.

Suddenly.

Dangerously cold.

Catherine walked toward the crib.

She ran one finger across the white railing.

"The situation was being managed."

Managed.

Not solved.

Not handled.

Managed.

Like a business problem.

Like a public relations crisis.

Like me.

Marcus shook his head.

"No."

"Oh, don't be dramatic."

His face darkened.

"Mother."

She ignored him.

"Jessica would have had the child. Financial arrangements would have been made. The matter would have remained private."

My stomach twisted.

Private.

As though a human life was an inconvenience.

As though my marriage was a line item on a spreadsheet.

"As for Elena..."

Catherine smiled.

"...she would have continued living exactly as she is now."

I could barely breathe.

"You mean ignorant."

"If you prefer that word."

Marcus exploded.

"What the hell is wrong with you?"

For the first time, Catherine looked surprised.

Not by the situation.

By him.

Because Marcus Sterling never lost control.

Not publicly.

Not privately.

Not ever.

Until tonight.

"You cheated on your wife," Catherine said sharply.

"Do not stand there pretending to be morally outraged."

Marcus stepped forward.

"I made a mistake."

"You made a catastrophe."

"And you decided to fix it by lying to everyone?"

"I decided to protect this family."

I stared at her.

Then suddenly, a memory surfaced.

A conversation from four months ago.

Jessica sitting beside me during brunch.

Smiling.

Touching her wineglass without drinking.

I remembered teasing her.

"Still pretending to be healthy?"

She had laughed.

Then Catherine had interrupted.

Immediately.

Changing the subject.

At the time, I thought nothing of it.

Now every piece clicked into place.

Every strange look.

Every canceled dinner.

Every awkward silence.

Every moment that had felt wrong.

Jessica hadn't been avoiding alcohol.

She had been hiding a pregnancy.

And Catherine had helped her.

My chest tightened.

"Where is she?"

The question escaped before I could stop it.

Nobody answered.

I looked directly at Catherine.

"Where is Jessica?"

Her expression never changed.

"Safe."

My blood boiled.

"Safe?"

"She's under a great deal of stress."

I stood despite the pain in my back.

Marcus immediately moved toward me.

This time I didn't tell him to stop.

I needed help staying upright.

The realization hurt.

"I trusted her."

My voice cracked.

"I loved her."

Nobody spoke.

"I told her everything."

Memories flooded through me.

Jessica holding my hand during fertility treatments.

Jessica crying when I suffered my miscarriage three years ago.

Jessica helping me choose baby names.

Jessica organizing my baby shower.

Jessica kissing my forehead and saying:

You're finally going to be a mom.

The room spun.

Because now every memory felt poisoned.

Every smile looked fake.

Every hug looked calculated.

"Did she know?" I asked.

Catherine said nothing.

That was answer enough.

Tears burned my eyes.

"She knew the whole time."

Marcus closed his eyes.

I could see the horror settling over him.

Not because of the affair.

Because he was finally understanding the scale of it.

One mistake.

One drunken night.

That was terrible enough.

But someone had built an entire web of lies around it.

For months.

Maybe longer.

Then Catherine said something that froze the room again.

"Actually, Jessica wanted to tell you."

I blinked.

"What?"

Marcus stared at her.

"What are you talking about?"

Catherine looked irritated.

"She became emotional."

My heart pounded.

"Emotional?"

"She believed Marcus should leave his marriage."

Nobody breathed.

Then Catherine continued.

"She thought the pregnancy changed things."

Marcus looked sick.

"No."

"She wanted him."

The words echoed.

She wanted him.

Not just the child.

Not just support.

Marcus.

My husband.

My best friend wanted my life.

The realization hit harder than the affair itself.

Because affairs can be mistakes.

Obsessions are choices.

And suddenly dozens of memories resurfaced.

Jessica laughing too hard at Marcus's jokes.

Jessica defending him whenever we argued.

Jessica remembering details even I forgot.

The signs had been there.

I had simply trusted her too much to see them.

"You stopped her."

Catherine nodded.

"Of course."

I stared.

"You stopped her from telling me?"

"Naturally."

The room seemed to tilt.

"Why?"

Catherine looked directly into my eyes.

And finally showed the truth.

Because it wasn't about protecting me.

It wasn't about protecting Marcus.

It wasn't even about protecting the company.

It was about power.

"Because you're the better wife."

The words landed like a slap.

"What?"

"You heard me."

Marcus looked horrified.

But Catherine kept talking.

"You are intelligent. Educated. Graceful. Respected. The board loves you."

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

"You make Marcus stronger."

She glanced toward the city skyline.

"Jessica would destroy everything."

For several seconds nobody spoke.

Then I whispered:

"So this isn't about morality."

"No."

"Or family."

"No."

"Or honesty."

Catherine smiled.

"No."

The truth sat naked between us.

Cold.

Ugly.

Terrifying.

This wasn't a family.

It was an empire.

And everyone inside it had become a chess piece.

Including me.

Including Marcus.

Including Jessica.

Then my phone buzzed.

All three of us looked down.

Unknown number.

A text message.

One photo.

Nothing else.

My hands shook as I opened it.

The image loaded.

Then the world stopped.

Marcus grabbed the phone.

His face drained of color.

"What is it?" Catherine asked.

Neither of us answered.

Because the photo showed Jessica.

Very pregnant.

Very frightened.

Standing beside a man neither of us recognized.

And taped behind her was a newspaper.

Today's date.

Proof the image was recent.

Proof she was alive.

Proof someone wanted us to know it.

Then I noticed the message hidden in the corner of the photograph.

Written on a whiteboard.

Three words.

HELP ME ELENA.

My heart stopped.

Marcus swore.

Catherine went pale for the first time all night.

Because suddenly this wasn't a scandal anymore.

It was something much worse.

Jessica wasn't hiding.

Jessica was trapped.

And whoever had sent the picture wanted us to know.

The next text arrived ten seconds later.

This time there were only six words.

DON'T TRUST CATHERINE STERLING.

May you like

And for the first time in decades...

Catherine Sterling looked afraid.
