Chapter 2 The Woman They Underestimated

Chapter 2 (Continued): Gloria's Last Secret

The black SUV remained parked across the street.
Its headlights cut through the rain like two unblinking eyes.
Nobody inside moved.
Nobody got out.
Yet its presence filled the apartment with fear.
Daniel immediately stepped toward the window.
"Who are they?"
Gloria grabbed his arm.
Hard.
Hard enough to surprise him.
"Don't."
Daniel looked down.
His mother was trembling.
Not pretending.
Not manipulating.
Terrified.
For the first time in his life, he saw genuine fear in her eyes.
The kind of fear that comes from years of looking over your shoulder.
The kind of fear that never truly leaves.
Elena's mind was already working.
Analyzing.
Calculating.
Connecting pieces.
"How long?" she asked.
Gloria swallowed.
"What?"
"How long have they been watching you?"
A long silence followed.
Then Gloria whispered:
"Since your father disappeared."
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"Who exactly are they?"
Gloria stared at the floor.
"When your father started moving money, he wasn't working alone."
"Who was he working with?"
"Dangerous people."
Daniel's patience snapped.
"Dangerous people isn't an answer."
Gloria looked up.
Tears filled her eyes.
"You think Marcus was cruel?"
Silence.
"You think what I did was unforgivable?"
Another silence.
"You haven't even seen the people behind this."
A knock suddenly echoed through the apartment.
Everyone froze.
Three sharp knocks.
Then silence.
Nobody moved.
Another knock.
This time louder.
Daniel instinctively stepped in front of Elena.
The third knock came slowly.
Deliberately.
Gloria looked ready to faint.
"They found me."
Daniel approached the door.
Elena grabbed his wrist.
"Wait."
Years of investigations had taught her one rule.
Never open a door when your instincts tell you not to.
Daniel looked through the peephole.
Nobody.
The hallway was empty.
The knock came again.
This time from farther away.
A neighboring apartment.
Then another.
And another.
The sound echoed throughout the building.
A prank.
Or a distraction.
Neither possibility felt reassuring.
Daniel slowly opened the door.
The hallway was empty.
But something rested on the floor.
A small white envelope.
No name.
No address.
Nothing.
Daniel picked it up.
Inside was a single photograph.
Gloria gasped.
The picture slipped from Daniel's fingers onto the table.
Elena looked down.
The image showed Daniel and Elena leaving their house two days earlier.
Taken from a distance.
Without their knowledge.
Someone had been watching them.
On the back of the photograph were six handwritten words.
STOP DIGGING.
LAST WARNING.
The room went silent.
Daniel felt anger replace shock.
Someone had spent years manipulating his family.
Years destroying lives.
Years hiding behind threats.
And now they believed they could intimidate him.
They were wrong.
Very wrong.
Later that night, Elena couldn't sleep.
The photograph sat on the kitchen counter.
A reminder that someone knew where they lived.
Someone knew where they went.
Someone wanted them scared.
Daniel walked downstairs around two in the morning.
He found Elena reviewing documents again.
"You should rest."
She smiled faintly.
"So should you."
He sat beside her.
For several moments neither spoke.
Then Daniel asked the question that had haunted him since childhood.
"Do you think my father ever loved us?"
Elena looked at him.
Carefully.
Because some questions don't have easy answers.
"I think people can love someone and still hurt them."
Daniel stared at the table.
"That's not enough."
"No."
"It's really not."
Elena reached for his hand.
Whatever his father had once been, the man who disappeared fifteen years ago had chosen money over family.
That truth hurt.
But denying it wouldn't make it disappear.
Daniel squeezed her hand.
Then looked at the stacks of records.
"Find him."
His voice was calm.
Steady.
Determined.
"Find every secret."
Elena nodded.
"I will."
Three days later, a breakthrough arrived.
A tiny inconsistency.
A mistake hidden inside thousands of transactions.
Most criminals eventually make one.
And Daniel's father was no exception.
A wire transfer connected to one of the shell companies had originated from a luxury property trust.
The trust led to another company.
Then another.
And finally to a penthouse apartment in Miami.
The owner name was false.
The documents were forged.
But the financial signature was unmistakable.
Someone connected to Daniel's father had used the account.
Recently.
Very recently.
Elena immediately contacted federal investigators.
Within hours a task force was assembled.
The case was no longer merely family fraud.
It had become a multi-state financial crime investigation.
Millions of dollars.
Decades of deception.
Dozens of victims.
Daniel's father wasn't simply hiding.
He was running.
And the walls were finally closing in.
Meanwhile, Gloria received another message.
This one arrived by text.
No phone number attached.
Just words.
Three simple words.
YOU TALKED.
Gloria nearly dropped her phone.
A second message appeared.
WE KNOW.
A third.
HE'S COMING.
By the time Daniel arrived at her apartment, Gloria was shaking uncontrollably.
She showed him the messages.
Daniel immediately forwarded everything to investigators.
But deep inside, he already knew what it meant.
His father knew the truth was unraveling.
And desperate men made dangerous decisions.
Especially when they had spent fifteen years escaping consequences.
Two nights later, Elena received a call.
Unknown number.
She almost ignored it.
Almost.
Instead she answered.
Silence greeted her.
Then breathing.
Slow.
Calm.
Deliberate.
A man's voice finally spoke.
"You should stop."
Elena's grip tightened around the phone.
"Who is this?"
A chuckle.
Low.
Cold.
"You've inherited your curiosity from no one in that family."
Her heartbeat accelerated.
She recognized the implication instantly.
The voice continued.
"You found things that were meant to stay buried."
Elena stood.
Daniel immediately noticed her expression.
The voice spoke again.
"Tell Daniel his father says hello."
The line disconnected.
Silence filled the room.
Daniel stared at her.
"What happened?"
Elena slowly lowered the phone.
Her face had gone pale.
Then she said the words that changed everything.
"I just spoke to your father."
Daniel froze.
The room became perfectly still.
Outside, rain battered the windows.
Inside, twenty years of secrets were finally beginning to surface.
And somewhere in the darkness, a man who was supposed to be dead had decided to step out of the shadows.
May you like
The hunt had officially begun.
To Be Continued...
