Chapter 2 The Woman on the Hospital Bed Was His Everything

Chapter 2: Blood Debts and Broken Truths

The rain hammered against the hospital windows like thousands of tiny bullets.
Inside the intensive care unit, the lights remained dim.
Machines hummed steadily.
Nurses moved quietly between rooms.
Everything appeared peaceful.
Normal.
But Dante Moretti had lived too long in a world where peace was usually the final warning before violence.
He stood beside Lena's bed, watching her sleep.
A bandage wrapped around her side.
Bruises marked her arms.
The pale woman lying before him barely resembled the vibrant Lena he once knew.
Yet even now she looked beautiful.
Perhaps because for the first time in years, he allowed himself to see her without pride, anger, or excuses.
Only regret.
His eyes moved to the photograph a nurse had placed beside the bed.
A picture found in Lena's purse.
Lena stood in a small apartment kitchen.
One hand rested on her pregnant stomach.
A gentle smile illuminated her face.
She looked happy.
Lonely.
But happy.
Dante stared at the image for a long time.
She had built an entire life without him.
While he buried himself in power and violence.
A soft knock interrupted his thoughts.
One of his captains entered.
Marco Ricci.
His most trusted man.
"We have a problem."
Dante immediately looked up.
"What happened?"
Marco closed the door.
"We found something."
Dante listened.
"The accident wasn't an accident."
The room instantly felt colder.
Marco handed him a tablet.
Security footage appeared on the screen.
A dark sedan followed Lena's car through several intersections.
The footage changed.
Another camera angle.
The sedan accelerated.
Then deliberately struck Lena's vehicle.
Dante's jaw tightened.
The impact looked brutal even on video.
Again.
And again.
The sedan kept pushing until Lena's car lost control.
The footage ended.
Silence filled the room.
Dante's expression never changed.
That was worse.
Much worse.
Marco knew that look.
Someone was about to die.
"Who?"
"We're still tracing the vehicle."
Dante handed back the tablet.
"Find them."
"We will."
"No."
Marco frowned.
Dante's eyes turned dark.
"Bring them to me."
Marco understood immediately.
This wasn't an arrest.
This wasn't revenge.
This was judgment.
Before either man could continue, an alarm suddenly exploded from the hallway.
Red lights flashed.
Nurses shouted.
A security guard ran past the door.
Dante's instincts activated instantly.
"What is that?"
Marco already had a pistol in his hand.
Then gunshots echoed through the floor.
Everything froze.
A nurse screamed.
Another gunshot.
Then another.
The hospital erupted into chaos.
Marco rushed toward the door.
"Stay here."
Dante was already moving.
Three more guards appeared from the hallway.
Weapons drawn.
One looked pale.
"They're inside."
"Who?"
"No idea."
Another burst of gunfire answered.
Patients screamed.
Glass shattered somewhere nearby.
Dante looked toward Lena.
Then toward the nursery where his son slept.
A terrible realization struck him.
This wasn't random.
Someone had come specifically tonight.
Someone knew Lena survived.
Someone wanted to finish the job.
"Dante!"
Marco pointed toward a security monitor.
The camera feed showed four armed men moving through the hospital corridors.
Efficient.
Professional.
Killing anyone who got in their way.
Not thieves.
Not gang members.
Assassins.
Dante's expression darkened.
Then he recognized one of them.
A scar across the man's neck.
A face he had not seen in years.
His stomach dropped.
"No."
Marco looked confused.
"What?"
Dante continued staring.
"I know who sent them."
The name escaped like poison.
"Viktor Volkov."
Marco's face immediately changed.
The Russian.
The ghost.
The man everyone believed was dead.
Five years earlier, Dante had destroyed Volkov's criminal empire.
A bloody war had followed.
In the end, Viktor disappeared.
Presumed dead.
Apparently not.
And now he was back.
The hallway exploded with more gunfire.
The assassins were getting closer.
Very close.
Dante made a decision.
"Move Lena."
Marco nodded.
"What about the baby?"
"I'll get him."
Without another word, Dante sprinted toward the neonatal unit.
Around him, terrified staff ran for cover.
A doctor grabbed his arm.
"Sir, you can't be here!"
Dante ignored him.
His son's room appeared ahead.
Two nurses stood inside, frightened and confused.
The infant slept peacefully inside the incubator.
Completely unaware of the nightmare approaching.
Dante entered.
One nurse gasped.
"Mr. Moretti—"
"Give him to me."
"But—"
"Now."
Something in his voice eliminated all hesitation.
Moments later the tiny child rested safely in Dante's arms.
The baby opened sleepy eyes.
Then yawned.
Dante almost laughed despite the chaos.
The little boy had no idea armed killers were storming the hospital.
Gunshots echoed again.
Closer this time.
Very close.
A shadow appeared at the end of the corridor.
One of the assassins.
Dante immediately stepped behind the wall.
The killer advanced slowly.
Searching.
Hunting.
Then the man turned the corner.
A mistake.
A fatal mistake.
Dante struck instantly.
His elbow shattered the man's nose.
The weapon fell.
The assassin collapsed.
Before he could react, Dante seized the pistol.
One shot.
Silence.
The threat ended.
The nurses stared in horror.
Dante never looked back.
His focus remained entirely on the child.
"You're safe."
The words surprised even him.
The baby blinked.
Then grabbed Dante's finger again.
For one impossible moment, everything else disappeared.
The war.
The blood.
The danger.
None of it mattered.
Only this tiny life.
Only his family.
Then his phone vibrated.
Marco.
"Where are you?"
"Heading to Lena."
"Dante..."
Something in Marco's voice felt wrong.
Very wrong.
"What happened?"
A pause.
Then:
"She's gone."
The world stopped.
"What?"
"Lena's room is empty."
Dante's blood turned to ice.
"Explain."
"The guards are unconscious."
"Who took her?"
"We don't know."
For the first time that night, genuine fear entered Dante's heart.
Not anger.
Not rage.
Fear.
Because Lena had vanished.
And he knew exactly who was responsible.
Viktor Volkov.
Hours later.
The rain finally stopped.
Dawn approached.
The city remained asleep.
But inside an abandoned warehouse near the river, Lena slowly opened her eyes.
Pain exploded through her body.
She winced.
Everything felt blurry.
Confused.
Distant.
A single light hung above her.
The smell of rust filled the air.
Then she heard footsteps.
Slow.
Deliberate.
A man emerged from the darkness.
Tall.
Gray-haired.
Cold eyes.
Lena immediately recognized him.
Even after all these years.
Viktor Volkov.
Fear tightened her chest.
"What do you want?"
The older man smiled.
Not kindly.
Never kindly.
"I've waited a long time to meet you."
Lena struggled against the restraints binding her wrists.
"Let me go."
Viktor laughed softly.
"I can't."
"Why?"
His expression changed.
Something darker appeared.
Because this wasn't merely revenge.
It was personal.
Very personal.
Viktor sat across from her.
Then pulled a photograph from his pocket.
He placed it on the table.
Lena stared.
Confusion filled her face.
The picture showed a woman she had never seen.
A young blonde woman.
Beautiful.
Smiling.
Dead eyes hidden beneath happiness.
"Who is she?"
Viktor's voice became almost gentle.
"My daughter."
Lena remained silent.
"I loved her more than anything."
His hands trembled slightly.
"Five years ago she died."
Lena frowned.
"What does that have to do with me?"
Viktor's eyes hardened.
"Everything."
The warehouse suddenly felt much colder.
"My daughter loved Dante Moretti."
Lena's heart skipped.
"What?"
"He never loved her back."
Viktor stood slowly.
"She took her own life because of him."
The revelation hit like a hammer.
Lena stared.
Speechless.
Viktor smiled bitterly.
"So I decided to take everything from him."
Realization dawned.
The accident.
The attack.
Everything.
Viktor leaned closer.
"And now I've almost succeeded."
Lena's pulse quickened.
"You're insane."
"No."
His smile widened.
"I'm patient."
Then he dropped another photograph onto the table.
This time Lena's blood froze.
The image showed her baby.
In Dante's arms.
Safe.
Alive.
Tears immediately filled her eyes.
"My son..."
"Still breathing."
Relief nearly broke her.
But Viktor wasn't finished.
"Do you know what fascinates me most?"
Lena looked up.
He studied her face carefully.
"The child."
Fear returned.
"What about him?"
Viktor's smile slowly disappeared.
Then he spoke words that shattered her entire world.
"Are you absolutely certain Dante is his father?"
Lena stared.
"What?"
Viktor walked toward the shadows.
"You should ask your mother."
Confusion exploded inside her.
"My mother is dead."
Viktor stopped.
Then turned.
A strange expression crossed his face.
"No."
Silence.
Lena's heart nearly stopped.
"No..."
"Your mother is very much alive."
The warehouse disappeared around her.
Nothing made sense anymore.
Every breath became difficult.
Every thought fragmented.
Viktor's final words echoed endlessly.
Your mother is alive.
Your mother is alive.
Your mother is alive.
Then another voice suddenly exploded from outside.
A gunshot.
Several more followed.
The warehouse erupted into chaos.
Viktor cursed.
His men rushed toward the entrance.
More gunfire.
Screams.
Shouting.
And then a voice Lena recognized instantly.
"Dante!"
The warehouse doors exploded inward.
Armed men flooded the building.
Bullets flew.
Glass shattered.
Bodies fell.
At the center of the storm stood Dante Moretti.
Covered in rain.
Covered in fury.
Looking like death itself.
His eyes found Lena immediately.
And in that moment, nothing else mattered.
Not the bullets.
Not Viktor.
Not the war.
Only her.
Only the woman he refused to lose again.
But neither of them noticed the expression on Viktor's face.
Because he was smiling.
Smiling as if everything was happening exactly according to plan.
And hidden inside his pocket was a sealed envelope.
May you like
An envelope containing a secret powerful enough to destroy Dante and Lena forever.
To be continued...
