Chapter 2 The Perfect Stepmother's Deadly Secret

Chapter 2: The Cracks Beneath the Perfect Smile

The flashing red and blue lights painted the mansion walls in shifting colors.

What had begun as a luxurious weekend gathering now resembled a crime scene.

Guests stood in small clusters across the patio, whispering nervously.

Nobody wanted to leave.

Nobody could.

Not until investigators finished taking statements.

At the center of it all sat six-year-old Lily Blackwood.

Wrapped in a thick white blanket.

Curled against her father.

Refusing to let go.

Every time someone approached, her tiny fingers tightened around Damian's shirt.

As if she feared he might disappear.

As if she feared someone might take her away.

Damian sat beside her on a lounge chair inside the pool house.

His arm remained around her shoulders.

His heart felt like shattered glass.

The image replayed endlessly inside his mind.

Lily falling.

Her terrified scream.

The look on Elena's face.

And worst of all...

The realization that his daughter had been afraid for a very long time.

Long before today.

Long before the pool.

Long before anyone noticed.

A female detective entered the room.

She looked gentle.

Careful.

The kind of person who understood how to speak with children.

"Mr. Blackwood."

Damian looked up.

The detective introduced herself.

"My name is Detective Rachel Monroe. I'd like to ask Lily a few questions if that's okay."

Lily immediately buried her face against her father's chest.

"No."

The detective nodded.

"That's okay."

Her voice remained soft.

"We don't have to do anything right now."

Damian stroked Lily's hair.

"Princess?"

Slowly, Lily looked up.

The detective smiled kindly.

"Nobody is in trouble for telling the truth."

Those words seemed to affect Lily.

Tears filled her eyes again.

For several moments she remained silent.

Then she whispered:

"Will she come back?"

The detective exchanged a glance with Damian.

"No," Rachel said gently.

"Elena is being questioned by officers right now."

Lily visibly relaxed.

That reaction alone sent another knife through Damian's heart.

A child should never feel safer because a parent figure is gone.

Never.

Rachel sat across from them.

"What happened at the pool today?"

Lily stared at her blanket.

Then at her father.

Then down again.

"She pushed me."

The room became silent.

Rachel carefully recorded the statement.

"Can you tell me what happened before that?"

Lily swallowed.

"She got mad."

"Why?"

Another pause.

The little girl's lower lip trembled.

"Because Daddy was talking to me."

Damian froze.

"What?"

Lily looked up.

Her eyes were red from crying.

"She always gets angry when you're with me."

The words hit harder than anything the detective could have said.

Rachel remained quiet.

Allowing the child to continue.

Lily spoke softly.

Like someone revealing a dangerous secret.

"She says I'm in the way."

Damian felt physically sick.

"What did she say exactly?"

Lily hesitated.

Then repeated the words perfectly.

"'If you weren't here, everything would belong to me.'"

The air left Damian's lungs.

Rachel's expression darkened.

"How many times has she said things like that?"

Lily looked confused.

"As long as I remember."

Damian closed his eyes.

The guilt arrived all at once.

Heavy.

Crushing.

How had he missed this?

How?

The detective continued carefully.

"Did Elena ever hurt you before today?"

Lily didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she looked at her father.

Almost as if she feared disappointing him.

Then she slowly nodded.

The room went cold.

Damian felt his pulse pounding.

"What do you mean?"

Lily pulled the blanket tighter.

"She pinched me."

A pause.

"When Daddy wasn't looking."

Another pause.

"Sometimes she locked me in my room."

Damian's face lost all color.

"What?"

Lily's voice cracked.

"She said I was bad."

Rachel stopped writing for a moment.

Even she seemed shocked.

"Did she ever threaten you?"

Lily nodded immediately.

"She said if I told Daddy, he wouldn't love me anymore."

Silence.

Pure silence.

Damian stared at the floor.

Every memory now looked different.

Every moment.

Every conversation.

Every excuse.

Suddenly things made sense.

The nightmares.

The anxiety.

The stomach aches before school.

The fear.

All of it.

He hadn't protected her.

The realization nearly destroyed him.

Outside the pool house, Elena sat inside the library under police supervision.

Her elegance had returned.

At least on the surface.

She looked calm.

Collected.

Confident.

But Detective James Carter had spent twenty years interrogating criminals.

He recognized panic when he saw it.

Even hidden panic.

"You maintain Lily accidentally fell?"

Elena folded her hands.

"Of course."

"We have two witnesses."

"They misunderstood."

James leaned back.

"Interesting."

Elena offered a practiced smile.

"I loved Lily."

The detective didn't react.

He had heard better lies.

Far better.

"Then why does she seem terrified of you?"

For the first time, irritation flashed across Elena's face.

Only briefly.

Children exaggerate.

Children lie.

Children misunderstand.

The excuses came too quickly.

Too smoothly.

As though she'd rehearsed them before.

James made a note.

Then another officer entered.

He handed over a folder.

James opened it.

His eyebrows rose.

Interesting.

Very interesting.

"Mrs. Blackwood..."

Elena's smile faded.

"Yes?"

The detective tapped the file.

"We've been reviewing financial records."

A flicker of concern appeared.

Gone almost instantly.

"What about them?"

James studied her carefully.

"Several large transfers were made from joint accounts during the last eighteen months."

Elena straightened.

"There is nothing illegal about that."

"Perhaps not."

He flipped another page.

"But there are also life insurance policy changes."

Now she looked genuinely uncomfortable.

The detective noticed.

"Quite substantial policies."

Elena remained silent.

James leaned forward.

"Policies that significantly benefit you if something happens to Mr. Blackwood."

For the first time since questioning began...

Elena had no immediate answer.

Meanwhile, Margaret stood in the mansion kitchen.

Her wet clothes had been replaced.

But her hands still shook.

A younger officer approached.

"Mrs. Holloway?"

Margaret nodded.

"You mentioned concerns before today's incident."

The older woman stared through the window.

The gardens looked beautiful.

Peaceful.

Deceptively peaceful.

"I should have spoken sooner."

The officer waited.

Margaret swallowed.

"I noticed things."

"What kind of things?"

She hesitated.

Then finally said it.

"The child was afraid."

A pause.

"And Elena hated that little girl."

The officer wrote quickly.

Margaret continued.

"At first I thought I was imagining it."

"But?"

"Then I started seeing bruises."

The officer looked up.

"Bruises?"

Margaret nodded.

"Small ones."

Her voice broke.

"Places nobody would easily notice."

The officer's expression hardened.

"When was this?"

"Months ago."

Guilt flooded her face.

"I should have gone to Damian."

"Why didn't you?"

Margaret laughed bitterly.

"Because Elena was good."

Very good.

Too good.

She had fooled everyone.

Including herself.

For a while.

But eventually masks crack.

And Elena's mask had shattered at the pool.

Two hours later the guests finally departed.

The estate felt different now.

Not like a home.

Like a battlefield after the fighting ends.

Damian carried Lily upstairs himself.

She refused to leave his side.

Every few minutes she asked the same question.

"She's not coming back tonight?"

"No."

"Promise?"

"I promise."

The answer never seemed enough.

When he tucked her into bed, she grabbed his hand.

"Daddy?"

"Yes?"

The little girl hesitated.

Then whispered:

"Are you mad at me?"

The question nearly stopped his heart.

"What?"

Tears formed in her eyes.

"Because I told."

Damian immediately knelt beside the bed.

"No."

His voice broke.

"No, sweetheart."

Lily looked uncertain.

"Really?"

He kissed her forehead.

"Never."

A tear escaped his eye.

"You did exactly the right thing."

She studied him carefully.

As though trying to determine whether she could trust the answer.

Then she asked the question that would haunt him forever.

"Why didn't you know?"

Damian froze.

The room became unbearably quiet.

Lily wasn't accusing him.

She genuinely wanted to understand.

Why hadn't her father seen?

Why hadn't he protected her?

Why had she suffered alone?

Damian had no answer.

None.

Because every answer sounded like failure.

And he had failed her.

Spectacularly.

The little girl eventually drifted to sleep.

Still holding his hand.

Still afraid.

Still carrying wounds nobody had seen.

Damian remained beside her for over an hour.

Watching.

Thinking.

Remembering.

Then his phone rang.

Detective Rachel Monroe.

He stepped into the hallway.

"Detective?"

Her voice sounded serious.

"We found something."

His stomach tightened.

"What?"

"A former nanny."

Damian frowned.

"The one who quit last year?"

"Yes."

Rachel paused.

"According to her statement, she didn't quit."

The hallway suddenly felt colder.

"What do you mean?"

"She claims Elena forced her out."

Damian's pulse quickened.

"Why?"

The detective took a breath.

"Because the nanny reported concerns about Lily."

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Damian leaned against the wall.

"What concerns?"

Rachel's next words changed everything.

"She believed Lily was being abused."

The world tilted.

For several seconds Damian couldn't speak.

Couldn't breathe.

Couldn't think.

Because that meant someone had known.

Someone had tried to warn him.

And somehow Elena had buried it.

Destroyed it.

Hidden it.

"What else?" he finally asked.

Rachel hesitated.

Then spoke carefully.

"The nanny also mentioned something else."

"What?"

"Your first wife."

Damian's entire body stiffened.

Emma.

Even after three years, hearing her name hurt.

"What about Emma?"

The detective's voice lowered.

"The nanny said Elena seemed unusually interested in the details of Emma's accident."

A chill ran through him.

"What are you saying?"

"We don't know yet."

Rachel chose her words carefully.

"But the timing raises questions."

"What timing?"

"Elena first contacted you six weeks before Emma died."

Damian's blood ran cold.

No.

That couldn't be right.

He met Elena at a charity gala nearly a year later.

Didn't he?

Hadn't he?

The detective continued.

"We're verifying records."

His heartbeat thundered.

"Detective..."

Rachel's voice became very serious.

"There may be more to this than child abuse."

The hallway seemed to shrink around him.

His breathing grew shallow.

"What exactly are you telling me?"

A long pause.

Then the words.

The terrifying words.

The words that shattered the last remnants of certainty.

"We're beginning to question whether Emma's fatal accident was actually an accident."

Damian's knees nearly gave out.

Because suddenly...

Very suddenly...

Memories he hadn't examined in years began surfacing.

Small details.

Forgotten details.

Impossible details.

Details that no longer made sense.

And somewhere deep inside his gut...

A horrifying realization was beginning to form.

What if Elena hadn't entered his life after Emma died?

May you like

What if she'd been planning it long before?
