Chapter 2 She Was Just Serving Coffee Until She Accidentally Saved a Mafia Kingpin

Chapter 2: The Alley of Secrets

The alley behind Lou's Diner was soaked in rain and illuminated only by the flickering glow of a broken streetlamp.
Maddie stumbled as Nate pulled her through the narrow passageway between two brick buildings. Behind them, the sounds of gunfire echoed through the night, sharp cracks splitting the air.
She had never heard real gunshots before.
Movies never captured how terrifying they actually sounded.
Nate stopped suddenly and pressed her against the damp wall.
"Stay here."
His voice carried a dangerous authority.
Maddie opened her mouth to protest.
"What about the people inside?"
"My men are handling it."
Another burst of gunfire erupted.
Nate glanced toward the diner.
His expression hardened.
Something wasn't right.
Maddie noticed it immediately.
The confidence he had displayed inside the restaurant was gone.
Not fear.
Concern.
The kind of concern powerful people only showed when something important was at risk.
"Those men weren't after you, were they?" Maddie asked.
Nate looked at her.
For a moment, she thought he wouldn't answer.
Then he surprised her.
"No."
The answer hit her harder than expected.
"No?"
"They wanted someone connected to me."
A black SUV screeched into the alley.
The vehicle stopped just feet away.
Its doors flew open.
Three armed men emerged.
Maddie's heart nearly stopped.
But Nate relaxed.
His people.
A tall woman with short black hair approached immediately.
"Nate."
"What happened?"
"The attack was a distraction."
His eyes narrowed.
"How many?"
"At least six inside."
"And the package?"
The woman hesitated.
That was all Nate needed to see.
A curse escaped him.
Maddie watched confusion ripple across the group.
Nobody looked relieved.
Nobody looked victorious.
They looked like something had gone terribly wrong.
"What package?" she asked.
Every head turned toward her.
The alley suddenly felt very small.
The woman eyed Maddie suspiciously.
Nate rubbed his forehead.
"Not now."
"She saved your life."
"Which is why she's still standing here."
The woman frowned.
"She heard them?"
"Enough."
The woman looked impressed despite herself.
Most civilians would have run.
Maddie had listened.
Observed.
Acted.
Nate turned back toward his team.
"Find it."
"We're already searching."
"Search harder."
The woman nodded and disappeared toward the diner.
Maddie watched her leave.
Then she looked back at Nate.
The rain continued to fall between them.
"What exactly is happening?"
Nate laughed.
It wasn't a happy laugh.
It sounded tired.
"You really don't know who I am, do you?"
"I know the rumors."
"Forget the rumors."
He stepped closer.
His dark eyes locked onto hers.
"Tonight, someone tried to start a war."
A chill crawled down her spine.
"What kind of war?"
"The kind that leaves bodies on every corner."
Before she could ask another question, Nate's phone rang.
He answered immediately.
His face darkened.
Then darkened even more.
Finally he ended the call.
"They got it."
"The package?"
He nodded.
"What is it?"
For several seconds he said nothing.
Then he surprised her again.
"A ledger."
"A ledger?"
"A book full of names."
Maddie frowned.
"Whose names?"
"The kind of names powerful people kill to protect."
Lightning flashed overhead.
Nate's expression became grim.
"Judges."
"Politicians."
"Police captains."
"Business owners."
Maddie stared at him.
Realization slowly dawned.
Corruption.
Blackmail.
Secrets.
Enough secrets to destroy an entire city.
"The men inside the diner..."
"Were hired to delay me."
"And the SUVs?"
"The real team."
Maddie's stomach dropped.
The attack had never been about murder.
It had been about theft.
Everything at Lou's Diner had been a distraction.
A sudden roar echoed through the alley.
An engine.
Fast.
Too fast.
Nate reacted instantly.
"Down!"
He tackled Maddie just as a motorcycle exploded into the alley.
The rider opened fire.
Bullets shattered brick.
Glass exploded overhead.
The motorcycle raced past.
Nate rolled behind a dumpster with Maddie beneath him.
His body shielded hers completely.
More gunfire erupted.
His men returned fire.
The motorcycle disappeared into the rain.
Silence followed.
Heavy silence.
The kind that arrives after violence.
Maddie realized her hands were shaking.
Nate looked down at her.
"You okay?"
She laughed nervously.
"I think so."
Their eyes met.
For the first time all night, neither looked away immediately.
Something shifted.
A strange moment.
Unexpected.
Then Nate stood.
The moment vanished.
"We need to move."
"Move where?"
"Somewhere safe."
"Safe from who?"
His answer came instantly.
"Everyone."
An hour later, Maddie found herself staring at the largest mansion she had ever seen.
Iron gates.
Stone walls.
Private security.
The place looked less like a home and more like a fortress.
The gates opened automatically.
As they entered, Maddie finally understood why people feared Nate Jackson.
Power wasn't about expensive suits.
Power was about making entire systems move when you snapped your fingers.
Inside, dozens of people worked frantically.
Phones rang nonstop.
Security monitors displayed streets across the city.
Maps covered conference tables.
The atmosphere felt closer to a military headquarters than a residence.
A gray-haired man hurried toward Nate.
"We have a problem."
"How bad?"
"The worst kind."
The man's eyes shifted toward Maddie.
He lowered his voice.
"There was a leak."
Nate froze.
For the first time all night, genuine anger appeared on his face.
Not irritation.
Not concern.
Rage.
Someone close to him had betrayed him.
The realization spread through the room like poison.
Maddie suddenly understood something important.
The attack wasn't over.
It had only begun.
Because whoever had stolen the ledger already knew where Nate would look.
Already knew his people.
Already knew his plans.
Someone on the inside had opened the door.
And now nobody knew who could be trusted.
Including the waitress who had unexpectedly become part of the story.
As Nate disappeared into a conference room with his advisors, Maddie stood alone in the enormous foyer.
A maid handed her dry clothes.
Another offered tea.
Yet another escorted her toward a guest suite.
Everyone treated her with surprising respect.
Almost as if saving Nate's life had instantly elevated her status.
But Maddie barely noticed.
Her thoughts remained fixed on one terrifying possibility.
The scarred man.
The heavyset man.
The young man checking his watch.
Those men had seen her.
They knew she had ruined their plan.
And if the people behind tonight's attack were willing to start a war over a ledger...
What would they do to a waitress who had gotten in their way?
Upstairs, hidden behind the safety of thick walls and armed guards, Maddie looked out the rain-covered window.
Far below, Nate stood alone in the courtyard.
Rain poured over him.
He stared into the darkness.
Thinking.
Calculating.
Preparing.
And for reasons she could not explain, Maddie had the terrible feeling that before this was over, both their lives would change forever.
May you like
Because somewhere in the city, the stolen ledger was moving.
And the people who possessed it had just declared war.
